Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental

Hi,

Any one knows whats the future holds for the 747-8?

Will Lufthansa be the only ones operating the 747-8I? Heard Emirates and Thai were interested but nothing solid.

Pitty BA decided to go for the A380 instead. What abt JAL, Cathay, China Airlines? What abt MAS?

Does the future look bleak for the 747-8 now with the A380 as the new JUMBO.

There was a delayed with the 787, unfortunately that will also effect the production of 747-8 and 777-200F since they all uses same construction material which is the main issues.

The Boeing Company has passed a major milestone in the design of the 747-8 Intercontinental, completing 25 percent of the design releases for the new passenger airplane. This means a quarter of the information needed to build parts and tools for assembly has been completed and released for fabrication or procurement. "We have made tremendous progress on the design engineering," said Mo Yahyavi, vice president and general manager for the 747 Program. "The engineering is proceeding as planned and we are a step closer to bringing the 747-8 Intercontinental to market."

 

Since much of the design is the same as the 747-8 Freighter, which Boeing is building first, the engineering focus is on work that is unique to the 747-8 Intercontinental, comprising mostly fuselage and interior design. The most obvious difference is that the 747-8 Intercontinental fuselage will boast an extended upper deck.

 

On the interior, the airplane will incorporate features from the 787 Dreamliner, including a new curved, upswept architecture that will give passengers a greater sense of space and comfort, while adding more room for personal belongings. The architecture will be accentuated by lighting technology that provides smooth transitions for a more restful flight.

 

the airplane's performance, the 747-8 will be stretched 18.3 feet (5.6 meters) from the 747-400 to provide 467 seats in a three-class configuration and a range of approximately 8,000 nautical miles (14,815 kilometers). It will deliver nearly equivalent trip costs to those of the 747-400 and 13 percent lower seat-mile costs, plus 26 percent greater cargo volume. The 747-8 Intercontinental also will be 16 percent more fuel efficient and create a 30 percent smaller noise footprint than its predecessor.

 

The 747-8 Intercontinental will be a great airplane for our customers," said Yahyavi. "Our team is focused on completing the remaining detailed design needed to deliver the airplane in late 2011."

 

The 747-8, which includes the 747-8 Intercontinental and the 747-8 Freighter, was launched in November 2005 by Cargolux Airlines and Nippon Cargo Airlines. Lufthansa was the first airline to order the 747-8 Intercontinental in December 2006.

Assembling 747-8 - August 16 - RC501 achieves power on

 

The first 747-8F began the process of powering on its systems on Friday as the new freighter moved another step closer to leaving the factory, Boeing confirms.

 

In the early hours of August 14th, RC501 was rolled on its landing gear from the final body join station inside Building 40-22 to the final systems integration slant.

 

The commencement of power on testing marks the beginning of the sequential activation of the 747-8s systems. The first typically activated is the electrical system that feeds power throughout the aircraft. Pneumatic and hydraulic power activation is expected to follow shortly.

 

Boeing expects the new freighter to roll out of the factory to the paint hangar late in the 3rd quarter or early in the 4th quarter before making its maiden flight by the end of the year.

 

RC501 is the first of three flight test aircraft that will support certification of the 747-8F and will eventually be delivered to Cargolux after being fully refurbished.

Boeing Delays 747-8 Freighter, Take Q3 Charge

Boeing, its reputation tarnished by the troubled 787 Dreamliner, said on Tuesday it would delay the first flight and delivery of its 747-8 Freighter and take a USD$1 billion charge because of high production costs and tough market conditions.

 

The delay -- the second announced this year for the new generation of the 747 -- pushes the first flight to early 2010 from the fourth quarter of 2009 and delivery to the fourth quarter of 2010 from the third quarter.

 

Boeing, which has about 100 orders for 747-8s on its books at list prices between USD$293 million and USD$308 million, gets paid by customers at delivery.

 

The charge and the related delay also called into question once again the credibility of the commercial planes division at the world's second largest plane-maker.

 

"They have so many issues with the 787 that it's taken their eye off the ball elsewhere," said Alex Hamilton, senior managing director at Jesup & Lamont.

 

"I just think it speaks to the other programmes," Hamilton said. "This quarter they've already announced charges related to the 787. Now you have charges related to the 747."

 

Boeing said it would update its 2009 financial outlook on October 21 when it reports third-quarter results.

 

Boeing said US$640 million of the third-quarter charge reflects higher estimated costs to produce the 747-8. The company said "late maturity of engineering designs" disrupted manufacturing in the third quarter.

 

The remaining USD$360 million of the charge is linked to tough market conditions and the company's decision to maintain the 747-8 production rate at 1.5 planes per month nearly two years longer than previously planned.

 

Though not nearly as innovative or fuel-efficient as the carbon-composite 787, the 747-8 shares technology with the the high profile 787. The 787 Dreamliner, which is two years behind its original schedule, is set to fly by the end of 2009.

 

The 747 family has been in the air since 1969 and is Boeing's biggest and most recognisable commercial plane.

 

The 747-8 uses new engine and wing designs, boasts greater fuel efficiency and lower operating costs than the Airbus A380, its closest rival, Boeing says. The Freighter can carry 16 percent more cargo than the previous 747 model, while the Intercontinental can carry 51 more passengers.

 

Also on Tuesday, Boeing said it delivered 113 planes in the third quarter, compared with 84 deliveries in the third quarter of 2008.

Don't think Boeing can deliver the 747-8I immediately - it will just cause even more delays. They do need to replace the B744s with more fuel efficient aircraft rather urgently.
