Airports' & Airlines' Operational Statistics

Recommended Posts

I must say I am surprised North America did not make it to the list. I would imagine intra USA flights e.g. SFO - JFK to be listed.

IMHO I think they have more in terms of frequency, but in terms of passengers numbers it's broken up due to fragmentation.

The busiest international routes out of KUL in 2011 as per MAHB Annual Report 2011:

Busiest destinations to/from KLIA in 2011 [passengers movement of more than 500,000]:

1. Singapore - 2,944,187 (+7.7%)

2. Jakarta - 1,551,994 (+16.1%)

3. Bangkok - 1,470,878 (+8.1%)

4. Hong Kong - 1,302,657 (+5.3%)

5. Denpasar - 794,578 (+11.5%)

6. Melbourne - 688,081 (-3.0%)

7. Ho Chi Minh City - 655,095 (+15.6%)

8. Taipei - 654,557 - (-1.1%)

9. Dubai - 615,068 - (+8.2%)

10. Guangzhou - 596,188 (+29.2%)

11. Medan - 530,700 (+16.5%)

12. Phuket - 519,781 (+21.4%)

13. Seoul - 519,065 (+52.7%)

14. Surabaya - 509,960 (+8.1%)

As we can see, with less than 3 million passengers traffic between KUL and SIN, it is not good enough to make it into the chart.

TIGER AIRWAYS OPERATING STATISTICS FOR THE MONTH OF JUNE 2012

• Tiger Airways Singapore recorded passenger growth of 6% in the month of

June 2012 compared to June 2011

• Tiger Airways Australia commenced operations from its second Australian base on

1 July 2012

Tiger Airways Singapore

In June 2012, Tiger Singapore carried 365,000 passengers, a 6% growth compared to the

previous year. Its passenger load factor (defined by revenue passenger-kilometres

expressed as a percentage of available seat-kilometres) was a robust 86%, unchanged from

the previous year.

For the 12 months to June 2012, Tiger Singapore carried 4.0 million passengers, an

improvement of 28% year-on-year.

Tiger Airways Australia

Tiger Australia is steadily ramping up its services and expects to be operating at levels

before the hiatus by October 2012. In June 2012, it carried 138,000 passengers, down 35%

year-on-year as a result of a reduced capacity and a limited schedule relative to June 2011.

It recorded a healthy passenger load factor of 82%, albeit 3 percentage points lower than in

June 2011.

For the 12 months to June 2012, Tiger Australia carried 1.2 million passengers, a decrease

of 63% compared to the preceding 12-month period. This was primarily due to a hiatus in

services in mid-2011, and the subsequent under-utilisation of its fleet.

The second Australian base in Sydney commenced operations with the launch of Sydney –

Gold Coast services on 1 July 2012.

BANGKOK- The recession in Europe is biting into the evolution of air transport capacity this winter season. From eight airports in Southeast Asia connected to Europe, five of them will experience a decrease in seat capacities this winter compared to IATA previous winter season 2011/12. Looking at data from IATA SRS Analyser for November 2012 – when winter schedule are fully implemented- the largest decrease will affect Jakarta with seats’ capacity down by 16.4% as Garuda reduced sharply its services to Amsterdam. Bangkok experiences the second largest decrease on a year-to-year basis with seats capacity down by 8.1 %. The Thai capital lost in one year two airlines (Qantas and Air Berlin) while Athens, Berlin and Düsseldorf services were terminated. Phnom Penh is also affected by Air France’s reduced activity in the region. A smaller aircraft is put into service via Saigon, translating into a decline of 7.9% in seats. Following AirAsia X decision to terminate in April its two services to London Gatwick and Paris Orly while Malaysia Airlines stopped its route to Rome, capacities out of Malaysia to Europe is down by 6%. Ho Chi Minh City will experience a slight reduction of 1.9% in seats capacity this coming winter.

Singapore Changi International however continues to offer more seats although they will be less destinations directly connected to the City State (14 destinations versus 16 in November 2011). Singapore total seats capacity to Europe is up by 3.8%. Surprisingly, the biggest increase in total seats will be at Manila airport. KLM enjoys a full monopoly to Europe as Philippine Airlines withdraw from this market a decade ago. This winter KLM will offer 9,810 seats per month between Amsterdam and Manila, up by 20%.

Compared to winter 2011, Athens, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Manchester and Warsaw are not anymore connected to Southeast Asia while London Gatwick, Paris Orly and Rome are not connected anymore to Kuala Lumpur.

Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport pax up 6% in Jun-2012

Australia's Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport passenger numbers up 6% - traffic highlights for Jun-2012:

Passenger numbers: 2,858,000, +6.2%;

Domestic: 1,884,000, +4.0%;

International: 965,000, +10.4%

Sydney Airport achieved its best June on record for International and Domestic passenger numbers.

Sydney Airport CEO Kerrie Mather said “The launch of new low cost services to Asia was the driver of the exceptional International growth of 10.4% during the month. Scoot’s daily service to ingapore has been very popular with the travelling public, with the number of Singaporeans arriving in Sydney increasing by 62% and the number of Australians travelling to Singapore increasing by 29% in June. Very strong growth in the Malaysian market was also recorded, with a 69% increase in Malaysians visiting Sydney and a 31% increase in Australians travelling to Malaysia. Travellers continue to embrace low fare international travel opportunities, with the recent outstanding results in the Singaporean and Malaysian markets a clear indicator of why low cost carriers form an integral part of our growth strategy.

“Pleasingly, the Domestic market also performed well in June, returning to positive year-on-year growth as a result of Virgin Australia and Jetstar adding capacity, higher average load factors and the cycling of the Chilean ash cloud. Tiger Airways opened its new base on 1 July, and with three A320 aircraft to be based in Sydney by September, we look forward to Tiger increasing its Gold Coast services and returning to Brisbane in the coming months.”

Key Points

 Total passenger traffic for June is estimated to have increased 6.2% on the pcp, with

domestic traffic estimated to be up 4.0% on the pcp and international traffic

(excluding domestic on-carriage) up 10.4% on the pcp.

 For international traffic, the major nationality markets that grew included Australia

outbound (+11%), Malaysia (+69%), Singapore (+62%), Japan (+27%),

India (+20%), Indonesia (+12%), New Zealand (+12%), China (+9%),

Canada (+3%) and the USA (+1%). France (-4%) was the major nationality market

that declined.

 China Southern resumed double daily frequencies to Guangzhou, adding three

weekly A330 frequencies from 25 June 2012.

 Air Vanuatu added one weekly B737-800 frequency to Port Vila, flying daily from

26 June 2012.

 Tiger Airways opened its new Sydney base on 1 July 2012 with the commencement

of a daily A320 service to the Gold Coast. Additional daily A320 frequencies to the

Gold Coast and a double daily A320 service to Brisbane will commence on

1 August 2012. Frequencies on both routes will increase to four times daily from

1 September 2012.

 Hainan Airlines will return to Sydney with three weekly A330 frequencies to

Shenzhen from 29 October 2012.

 Malaysia Airlines, which operates a double daily service to Kuala Lumpur, has

confirmed it will introduce a 494-seat A380 on one of its daily frequencies from

26 November 2012.

 Results for June 2012 are positively impacted by the cycling of the 2011 Chilean

volcanic ash cloud, and the opening weekend of NSW school holidays falling in

June 2012 compared to July 2011.

With capacity cut, new A33E, 5 star carrier award, award winning signature dish, D7 abstained from LHR and CDG and yet international load factor still drop! :sorry: Hope the yield increased is more than compensate for reduced load factor.

KLIA's half year statistics (Jan - Jun 2012):

KLIA1H2012.png

Jan - Jun 2012 Traffic Report

Passenger traffic in the first half of 2012 at MAHB operated airports registered 32.6 million movements with a growth of 4.2% compared with the same period in 2011. International and domestic passengers registered a growth of 5.1% and 3.5% respectively. The overall increase in international passengers was mainly contributed by 12.4% increase in foreign airlines movements and 8.7% increase in AirAsia Group movements. New airlines that commenced operations during this period such as Mandala Airlines, Bangkok Airways, Airphil Express and AirAsia Philippines had also contributed to the growth of international passengers at KLIA and LCCT. MASWings that operates rural services has commenced international operations from Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and Tawau to Pontianak, Bandar Seri Begawan and Tarakan. Generally, the main thrust of the growth was in the international sector.

Passenger growth exceeded aircraft movements growth. Overall aircraft movements grew by 1.7% in the first half of 2012 with total movements of 317,671 compared to 312,269 for the same period last year. International and domestic movements registered a growth of 4.4% and 0.2% respectively. Certain airports such as Melaka and Tawau recorded a high growth due to the increase in frequency by Firefly and MASWings. The small growth for domestic movements was mainly due to the termination of Firefly operations at KLIA, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching.

In line with the lack lustre world economic performance, cargo movements continue to remain in the negative.

Despite the lower growth in April to June, year-on-year cumulative total passenger movements up to June remains in line with the projected levels. Foreign airlines have shown continued vigour in contributing to the additional passengers. The Main Terminal of KLIA has particularly shown renewed growth against the forecast levels. Based on the scheduled data, there was a high net addition in the seat capacity offered in the international sector for KLIA compared to the other international airports in the region for June. This was unlike the past few months, and is a positive development.

Kuala Lumpur International Airport pax down 3%, cargo down 2% in Jul-2012

Passenger traffic at MAHB operated airports registered 5.6 million movements in July 2012, down by 2.8% compared to July 2011. Both international and domestic passengers registered a negative growth of 1.4% and 4.1% respectively. The overall decline was attributable among others to certain primary reasons. July is generally among the high months for passenger traffic. Malaysia tends to have a high number of Middle Eastern tourists during this period. The high base of July 2011 and the expected lower travel during the fasting month which came earlier this year, was partly responsible for the negative numbers. For the reverse reason August is expected to register a good double digit growth.

Aircraft movements also declined by 1.9% for July 2012 with total movements of 54,277 compared to 55,327 for the same period last year. International movements registered a growth of 3.3% while domestic movements was down by 4.8%.Generally, domestic air travel is low during the fasting month.

In line with the lack lustre world economic performance, cargo movements continue to remain in the negative.

For now the international seat capacity offerings by airlines looks buoyant for the 4rth quarter. Malaysia Airlines has been adding new routes and capacity in addition to AirAsia’s expansion of capacity in some sectors. Apart from the high double digit foreseen for August, this would help to elevate the passenger traffic volume for the last quarter subject to the local and world economic performance and relative price of aircraft fuel.

In August 2012, Singapore Airlines' systemwide passenger carriage (measured in revenue passenger kilometres) grew 8.7% year-on-year against a 6.4% increase in capacity (measured in available seat kilometres). As a result, passenger load factor (PLF) improved by 1.7 percentage points to 78.3%. The number of passengers carried increased by 6.5% to 1.5 million.

Load factors improved across most regions on the back of strong summer demand and earlier Lebaran holiday travel. PLF for East Asia and South West Pacific route regions declined as growth in demand was outstripped by the increases in capacity. Promotional activities are expected to continue to place downward pressure on passenger yields.

SilkAir’s systemwide passenger carriage increased 27.5% year-on-year against 21.9% growth in capacity. Consequently, PLF was 3.3 percentage points higher at 73.5%. PLF for West Asia routes registered a yearon-year increase of 10.9 percentage points, due to increased demand over the Onam Festival period which fell in August this year compared to September last year.

Overall cargo traffic (measured in freight-tonne-kilometres) was 4.3% lower year-on-year, while cargo capacity decreased by 1.6%. Consequently, cargo load factor (CLF) in August 2012 fell by 1.7 percentage points. CLF decreased for all regions, except for Europe and West Asia & Africa. Year-on-year, East Asia cargo traffic was flat and could not keep pace with the increase in capacity arising from the cargo capacity on passenger flights.

Summary:

Passenger numbers: 1.5 million, +6.5% year-on-year;

Passenger load factor: 78.3%, +1.7 ppt;

East Asia: 77.3%, -2.2 ppts;

Americas: 85.9%, +5.8 ppts;

Europe: 81.8%, +3.4 ppts;

South West Pacific: 73.6%, -1.3 ppt;

West Asia and Africa: 67.9%, +4.0 ppts;

Cargo volume: 95,700 tonnes, -2.4%;

Cargo load factor: 60.6%, -1.7 ppt;

East Asia: 48.8%, -5.7 ppts;

Americas: 63.4%, -0.7 ppt;

Europe: 70.2%, +1.0 ppt;

South West Pacific: 59.3%, -0.9 ppt;

West Asia and Africa: 60.0%, +0.4 ppt.

It looks like the domestic Hari Raya Aidilfitri traffic has boosted MH's passenger loads in August.

While international passenger numbers are down, load factor is up. It shows that capacity is now more in line with demand. MH is getting there, albeit, slowly! :)
