Airports' & Airlines' Operational Statistics

Recommended Posts

MAHB has released its much awaited Annual Report 2011 and here are some of the highlight statistics:

The ranking of Malaysia's busiest airport in 2011 by passengers traffic (for airports that handled more than 1 million passengers only) [except JHB which is privately owned]:

1. KUL - 37,704,510 (+10.6%)

2. BKI - 5,808,639 (+11.2%)

3. PEN - 4,600,274 (+10.4%)

4. KCH - 4,286,722 (+16.3%)

5. MYY - 1,856,626 (+9.5%)

6. LGK - 1,504,697 (+9.5%)

7. SZB - 1,320,227 (+18.1%)

8. SBW - 1,133,093 (+12.3%)

9. KBR - 1,132,345 (+8.1%)

- KUL recorded its best ever passengers traffic in 2011 and is now in world ranking no. 27.

- BKI continues its run as Malaysia's 2nd busiest airport and is set to break into the 6 million passengers mark in 2012.

- PEN maintains its title of Malaysia's 3rd busiest airport from KCH for the 2nd consecutive year and is set to break into the 5 million passengers mark in 2012.

- Despite losing out to PEN again, KCH recorded the 2nd highest growth (of 16.3%) amongst the top 9 airports in Malaysia that handled more than 1 million passengers.

- All airports that handled more than 1 million passengers in Malaysia recorded an astonishing growth rates of between 8 - 18%.

- The standing of the airports did not change from the 2010's ranking with the exception for ranking no. 8 and 9, where Sibu overtook Kota Bharu by a mere 748 passengers. In 2010, Kota Bharu was ahead of Sibu by 38,753 passengers.

- Together with JHB (which is privately owned and managed), Malaysia still has 10 airports that handle more than 1 million passengers annually.

The next 3 airports in the ranking are:

10. TWU - 922,452 (+2.7%)

11. SDK - 788,515 (+6.3%)

12. BTU - 590,253 (+5.9%)

Tawau's growth has been rather marginal all these years but hopefully it can break into the 1 million passengers mark within the next 3-4 years.

The highest growth is recorded by IPH, whose passengers number jumped 46.7% from 48,508 passengers in 2010 to 71,169 passengers in 2011.

Only 4 airports recorded a decline in passengers movement - Pangkor, Redang, TGG and MKZ. The worst performing airport is Pangkor whose number plunged 78.9% to only 547 passengers in 2011.

Very doubtful - according to outlook by Datuk Masidi :)

Datuk Masidi boleh pakai ke LOL? BKI only need an average annual growth of 3.29% in 2012 to achieve 6 million passengers mark. Based on BKI's growth numbers over the years, NOT achieving a growth of 3.29% is the fact that is 'very doubtful'.

Busiest destinations to/from KLIA in 2011 [passengers movement of more than 500,000]:

1. Singapore - 2,944,187 (+7.7%)

2. Jakarta - 1,551,994 (+16.1%)

3. Bangkok - 1,470,878 (+8.1%)

4. Hong Kong - 1,302,657 (+5.3%)

5. Denpasar - 794,578 (+11.5%)

6. Melbourne - 688,081 (-3.0%)

7. Ho Chi Minh City - 655,095 (+15.6%)

8. Taipei - 654,557 - (-1.1%)

9. Dubai - 615,068 - (+8.2%)

10. Guangzhou - 596,188 (+29.2%)

11. Medan - 530,700 (+16.5%)

12. Phuket - 519,781 (+21.4%)

13. Seoul - 519,065 (+52.7%)

14. Surabaya - 509,960 (+8.1%)

  • Domestic passengers in KLIA in 2011 was 11,397,711 which is the second consecutive year the number surpassed 10 million passengers mark. KLIA handled 10,315,251 domestic passengers in 2010 and 9,995,832 domestic passengers in 2009. The growth rate recorded in 2011 is 10.49%.
  • 2011 saw MH's domestic passengers fall by 5.4%. MH handled 4,109,363 domestic passengers in KLIA in 2011, the lowest number since 2007.
  • In 2011, the domestic market share in KLIA is shared between 3 airlines following the commencement of FY's jet operation in KLIA in April 2011. The domestic market share is controlled by AK with 58%, followed by MH with 36% of the pie and FY with the remaining 6%. AK's market share was unchanged from 2010 but MH's deteriorated by 6% from 42% in 2010 following FY's entry into the market. Based on pure quantitative ground, FY's entrant in KLIA does not have any impact to AK at all.
  • AK recorded a growth of 10.3% in 2011 as compared to 6.9% in 2010 for domestic passengers. AK handled 6,586,687 domestic passengers in KLIA in 2011, the highest ever achieved by the airline in a single calendar year.
  • 2011 also saw Firefly entering this segment for the first time. Although managed to capture quite a significant market share of 6% in such a short time, the never ending political interference in the airline industry has cut the airline's timeline in KLIA short. However, with the ever flip flopping decisions by the government, it is interesting to see whether FY will make a comeback in 2012 or not.

I believe that SZB also handles over 1m pax per annum since 2010.

However, I do not seem to be able to find an official source for the numbers.

- 2011 saw some interesting movements in the ranking of the international segment in KLIA. Singapore Airline is no longer in the top 10 airlines in KLIA for the very first time in history!

- MH continues to be the largest international airline in KLIA although its market share drops from 32.8% in 2010 to 31.5% in 2011. Despite the drop in market share, MH's international passengers number increased by +19.8% or 1,289,281 passengers to from 7,804,797 passengers in 2010. KLIA recorded an impressive growth in international passengers segment in 2011

- On the other hand, AK's market share surprisingly declined from 25.5% in 2009 to 24.9% in 2010. Despite the decline in market share, AK carried 900,001 more international passengers in 2010 than it did in 2009, representing a growth of +17.9%.

- The difference of international passengers traffic between MH and AK is 1,880,054 passengers in 2010 vs. 1,490,774 in 2009. MH has managed to improve its margin with AK.

- As a group, AirAsia group airlines [AK, D7 and QZ] control 38.3% of international market shares in KLIA, higher than MH's 31.5%.

- Malaysia based airlines [MH, AK and D7] control 65.2% of international market shares in KLIA, down from 65.4% in 2010.

- Indonesia AirAsia continues its reign as the largest foreign airline in KLIA for 3 years in a row now. 2011 saw the airline carried more than 1 million passengers for the first time. There has been no foreign airline that carries more than 1 million passengers in KLIA since SQ's heydays which ended in 2007.

- 2 airlines - Emirates and Tiger Airways recorded a massive jump in passengers traffic in 2011 and thus increasing their respective market shares in KLIA. Emirates managed to overtake Cathay Pacific for the first time and is now the 2nd biggest foreign airline in KLIA behind QZ with a market share of 2.8%. Emirates' market share is expected to increase in 2012 following the deployment of A380 aircraft on one of its 3 daily flights into KLIA. Tiger Airways seemed to come from nowhere and debuted at no. 7 in the ranking.

- Amongst the top 10 international airlines in KLIA, 3 of them belong to the AirAsia Group [AK, D7 and QZ], while another 2 belong to the SIA Group [MI and TR] minus SQ themselves.

- All 3 global alliances are well represented by the top 10 international airlines in KLIA - oneworld with CX, Star with TG while SkyTeam with KL. Airlines with global alliances association comprised of 30% of the top 10 international airlines in KLIA. MH is expected to be elected as a full member of oneworld at the end of 2012.

- Amongst the 10 largest airlines in KLIA, 4 are LCCs, while the other 6 are full service carriers. Only one of them (CX) is rated as '5 star' airlines.

2010 vs 2009 Gainers and Losers

Gainers

- Malaysia Airlines gained 1,289,281 passengers, growth of +19.8%

- AirAsia gained 900,001 passengers, growth of +17.95

- AirAsia X gained 839,966 passengers, growth of +85.6%, improved market share in KLIA from 5% to 7.7%.

- Indonesia AirAsia gained 51,627 passengers, growth of +5.7%

- Cathay Pacific Airways gained 132,123 passengers, growth of +24.5%, improved market share in KLIA from 2.7% to 2.8%.

- Emirates gained 236,586 passengers, growth of +57.5%, improved market share in KLIA from 2.1% to 2.7%.

- Silk Air gained 119,922 passengers, growth of +39.7%, improved market share in KLIA from 1.5% to 1.8%.

- Thai Airways gained 50,308 passengers, growth of +14.9%

- AK, D7, CX, EK and MI are all recorded their highest ever passengers numbers in KLIA in a single calendar year in 2010.

- Amongst the 7 largest foreign airlines in KLIA, Emirates recorded the highest gain of passengers of 236,586 and also the highest passengers growth of +57.5%. This is due to the airline's successful 3rd daily flight from DXB which also continues on to MEL with traffic rights in KLIA.

Losers

- KLM lost 9,391 passengers, negative growth of -2.3%, market share in KLIA dipped from 2.1% to 1.7%.

- Singapore Airlines lost 113,353 passengers, negative growth of -23%. Market share plummeted from 6.4% in 2007 to only 1.6% in 2010. SQ used to carry more than 1 million passengers in KLIA in 2007 and prior.

The massive drop of SQ's market share and MI's rise is inter-related as SQ handed over more flights to MI in 2010 following the liberalization of the KUL-SIN vv route since October 2008.

ACI has released the ranking for Top 30 World's Busiest Airport for January 2012. Last year, KLIA managed to secure a place in Top 30. This year might be a tough year for KLIA after MH and D7 dropped several routes after a share-swap and some airlines pulled out from KUL. But, there's still hope to maintain top 30 because there are some routes frequencies and capacities had been increased such as LAX, VTE, PEK, TPE, MNL, HKG and etc. And there are some new entrants such as Bangkok Airways, Mandala and Airphil.

You have to put NYC in context. As a metropolitan area it has 3 major airports serving it EWR, LGA and JFK. All 3 added up in fact makes NYC the second most busiest city in terms of air travel after London.

IIRC, BKK is the busiest airport in SE Asia so no surprise there! The number of airlines/destinations served out of BKK trumps any other SE Asia airports. Also, keep in mind that January is the high season for Thailand's tourism industry.

filipeseda, if you want to do that then you must add passenger numbers for LHR, LGW, LCY, LTN, STN together and you can then see how many people fly in and out of London.

Not saying we do that for airport ranking. If you read my post, London is the busiest with NYC trailing behind. Go check stats.

Also, most US airports do not pick up until the summer months and the tail end of the year.

And that is why we will be going there for the 2012 Malaysian Wings Anniversary! :)

He already stated that if 3 NYC airports added together, NYC will be SECOND most busiest city in terms of air travel AFTER London.

AirAsia X Q1 2012 Passenger Statistics

SEPANG - AirAsia X, the long haul, low fare affiliate of AirAsia today announced another load factor record in its first quarter of 2012.AirAsia X carried 0.69 million passengers, a growth of 7.5% over the same quarter in 2011.

This exceeded a capacity increase of 5.5% to 4.5 billion Available-Seat-Kms (ASKs), which was achieved with the same aircraft fleet of 9 Airbus A330s and 2 Airbus A340s, and tempered by the suspension of flights to Mumbai in February, and Delhi, Paris and London at the end of May.

In terms of passenger traffic, AirAsia X grew by 12.4% to 3.9 billion Revenue-Passenger-Kms (RPKs) for Q1-2012, resulting in a record-breaking quarterly load factor of 87%. This is an increase of 6 percentage-points from the same quarter last year, where it registered a load factor of 81%.

AirAsia X’s core markets in Australia, Greater China, and North Asia continues to deliver strong passenger growth, with continued positive increases in load factor, validating the airline’s strategy of rebalancing its network from Europe and India towards Australia and North Asia.

Azran Osman-Rani, CEO of AirAsia X, said, “Our continued growth points to a clear positive demand trajectory for 2012 compared to 2011, despite the continuous higher and more volatile fuel prices and uncertain global economies and competition. The airline’s strategy is to establish an optimal network where there is scale, focusing on its core markets where AirAsia X is in a position of strength.”

“We are confident we will keep growing into the second half of 2012, where we have new enhanced innovation and ancillary offerings. AirAsia X has improved its Fly-Thru connecting transfer service to more attractive destinations with better flight connectivity options across South East Asia and beyond. The airline recently increased flight frequencies from Kuala Lumpur to popular holiday destinations such as Ho Chi Minh (4X Daily), Bandung (4 X Daily) and Singapore (13 X Daily).”

Cargo operations on the other hand were affected by the discontinued India routes, with AirAsia X carrying 7,407 tonnes of freight for its current quarter, registering a 11% decrease from a year ago. However, due to strong improvement in yields, cargo revenue increased by a double –digit in the first quarter of 2012 compared to the first quarter in 2011.

AirAsia X is the long-haul, low-cost affiliate of AirAsia Bhd, Malaysia’s largest airline by market capitalization and passengers.

Malaysia Airports is pleased to announce the passenger, cargo and aircraft movements at airports operated by Malaysia Airports Group for the month of April 2012 and a summary of airport traffic for April 2012.

April 2012 Traffic Report

Passenger traffic in April 2012 at MAHB operated airports registered a year–on-year growth of 2.3% compared with April 2011. International passengers registered a growth of 4.8% while domestic passengers declined by 0.1%. The overall increase in international passengers was contributed by 8.6% increase in AirAsia Group movements and 11.9% increase in foreign airlines movements. AirAsia Group aircraft movements increased by 8.4% while other international airlines aircraft movements increased by 12.3%. The decrease in the number of domestic passengers was mainly due to the termination of operations by Firefly to KLIA, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching. There was not an equivalent replacement of capacity for the terminated flights.

Aircraft movements overall was down by 0.9% in April 2012 against April 2011. International movements registered a growth of 3.6% while domestic movements declined by 3.4%. The reduction in domestic movements was mainly due to the low domestic movements at MASB airports especially at Sabah and Sarawak airports.

Cargo movements overall declined by 0.7%. Cargo movements at KLIA increased by 3.4% while at MASB airports there was a 11.6% decline. The low cargo volume carried by Transmile Air in particular had contributed to the 7.3% reduction for domestic cargo at MASB airports.

Despite the lower growth in April, year-on-year cumulative passenger movements up to April remains in line with the projected levels. Foreign airlines have shown new vigour in contributing to the additional passengers.

Passenger numbers will be down because quite a number of international routes were suspended. However, load factor being down is not a good sign...

If it's down due to decreased frequencies or dropped routes for better cost savings, then that's still alright... but if it affects the revenue and the net profit, then that's too bad!

I must say I am surprised North America did not make it to the list. I would imagine intra USA flights e.g. SFO - JFK to be listed.
