The ranking of Malaysia's busiest airport in 2012 by passengers traffic (for airports that handled more than 1 million passengers only) [except JHB which is privately owned]:

  1. KUL - 39,887,866 (+5.8%)
  2. BKI - 5,848,135 (+0.7%)
  3. PEN - 4,767,815 (+3.6%)
  4. KCH - 4,186,523 (-2.3%)
  5. MYY - 2,018,415 (+8.7%)
  6. LGK - 1,594,106 (+5.9%)
  7. SZB - 1,442,514 (+9.3%)
  8. KBR - 1,259,205 (+11.2%)
  9. SBW - 1,204,267 (+6.3%)

  • KUL recorded its best ever passengers traffic in 2012.
  • All major airports in Malaysia recorded a dismal single digit growth, with the exception of KBR.
  • BKI remains as Malaysia's 2nd busiest airport but its growth rate is disappointing at 0.7% only compared to 11.2% it recorded in the previous year. My prediction that BKI is going to break into the 6 million passengers mark in 2012 did not come true.
  • PEN maintains its title of Malaysia's 3rd busiest airport from KCH for the 3nd consecutive year but my prediction that PEN is going to break into the 5 million passengers mark in 2012 did not come true too.
  • KCH is a complete and utter disaster. KCH is the only major airport whose numbers shrunk from previous year. Comparing to a growth of 16.3% it recorded in 2011, a minus 2.3% in 2012 is shocking.
  • MYY surpasses the 2 million passengers mark for the first time. Monumental!
  • The standing of the airports did not change from the 2011's ranking with the exception for ranking no. 8 and 9, where KBR overtook SBW back. In 2011, SBW was ahead of KBR by 748 passengers. In 2010, KBR was ahead of SBW by 38,753 passengers. We have a new rivalry building up in the tally between these two.
  • KBR recorded the highest growth of 11.2% among the big 9 airports in the country. As mentioned earlier, it is also the only airport which recorded a double digit growth. And, it is also the only airport whose growth rate in 2012 (11.2%) improved from 2011 (8.1%).
  • Together with JHB (which is privately owned and managed), Malaysia still has 10 airports that handle more than 1 million passengers annually in 2012.

The next 3 airports in the ranking are:

10. TWU - 982,153 (+6.5%)
11. SDK - 834,626 (+5.8%)
12. BTU - 661,553 (+12.1%)

Based on the numbers, TWU looks all set to break into the 1 million club in 2013.

The highest growth is recorded by Pangkor, whose passengers number jumped 643.7% from 547 passengers in 2011 to 4,068 passengers in 2012.

Only 4 airports recorded a decline in passengers movement in 2012 - KCH, Tioman, Redang, and Mulu. The worst performing airport is Mulu whose number plunged 25.9%.

Although MAHB is predicting an average growth of 7.1% for its airports in 2013, the current unfortunate event that is happening in Sabah will highly likely have negative impact to the figures for LDU, TWU, SDK and BKI. I hope the decline will not be too harsh.

Busiest destinations to/from KLIA in 2012 [passengers movement of more than 500,000]:

1. Singapore - 3,110,166 (+5.6%)

2. Jakarta - 1,843,397 (+18.8%)

3. Bangkok - 1,454,245 (-1.1%)

4. Hong Kong - 1,309,000 (+0.5%)

5. Denpasar - 782,861 (-1.5%)

6. Ho Chi Minh City - 733,523 (+12.0%)

7. Taipei - 695,284 (+6.2%)

8. Melbourne - 635,105 (-7.7%)

9. Dubai - 631,210 (+2.6%)

10. Guangzhou - 608,533 (+2.1%)

11. Medan - 585,430 (+10.3%)

12. Phuket - 574,935 (+10.6%)

13. Seoul - 565,936 (+9%)

14. Surabaya - 521,061 (-5.5%)

15. Sydney - 506,610 (+32.8%)

Notable observation:

  • Sydney entered the list for the first time. The huge growth for Sydney is attributed to the opening of the route to D7.
  • The figure for Ho Chi Minh City continues to rise exponentially. I am not aware that the city is very famous among Malaysians travelers.

Notable mention:

  • There is no much changes to the ranking from 2011 to 2012, in fact the ranking remains the same, with the exception at no. 7, where Tiger Airways got wiped out an replaced by Qatar Airways.
  • Qatar Airways was last in the top 10 ranking back in 2008. QR's massive jump is attributed by its 3 daily service to KLIA, which was introduced in 2012.
  • Tiger Airways first appearance in the top 10 was in 2011.
  • MH remains the largest international airline in KLIA although its market share further deteriorating to only 29.2% in 2012 as compared to 45.4% in 2007. The number of international passengers carried was also declined.
  • AK market share increased to 25.8%, the highest ever recorded by the airline.
  • The difference of international passengers traffic between MH and AK is 963,400 in 2012 versus 1,804,848 (2011); 1,880,045 (2010) and 1,490,774 (2009). MH has managed to improve its margin with AK.
  • As a group, the AirAsia group of airlines (AK, D7 and QZ) controlled 39.2% of international market shares in KLIA. This improves from 38.3% in 2011, 36.6% in 2010 and 35.1% in 2009.
  • Malaysia based arlines (MH, AK and D7) controlled 63.9% of international market shares in KLIA versus 65.2% in 2011 and 65.4% in 2010. The number continues to decline as foreign airlines further strengthening their positions.
  • Indonesia AirAsia continues its reign as the largest foreign airline in KLIA for 4 years in a row now. The airline also remains the only foreign airline that carried more than 1 million passengers in KLIA since SQ's heydays which ended in 2007.
  • Emirates and Cathay Pacific remain the 2nd and 3rd largest international airlines at KLIA.
  • Among the top 10 international airlines in KLIA, 3 of them belong to the AirAsia Group (AK, D7 and QZ).
  • All 3 global alliances are well represented by the top 10 international airlines in KLIA with oneworld controlled a golden share with MH and CX, Star with TG while Skyteam with KL. QR, which will be elected into oneworld alliance in 2013 will further enhance the alliance's position in KLIA.
  • Among the 10 largest airlines in KLIA, 3 are LCCs, while the other 7 are full service carriers. Of the 10 airlines, three of them - MH, CX and QR - are rated as '5 star' airlines.

2012 vs 2011 Gainers and Losers

2012GainersLosers_zpsd60554ac.png

  • AK gained the highest number of passengers of 740,705 in 2012, which represent a growth of 11.44%. AK also the airline which improved its market share by the highest pencentage point of 1.2.
  • EK gained the highest growth of passengers among the top 10 airlines with 12.31%. This is contributed by the airline's 4 daily service to KLIA, one of which served by the A380. This double digit growth of passengers number translated into improvement o EK's market share in KLIA by 0.1 ppt.
  • MH is the biggest loser in terms of passenger numbers, lost 100,743 passengers during the period. MH also the airline with the worst decline of market share, down 2.3 ppt.
  • MI is the airline with the worst negative growth in the group with -4.09% decline from previous year.

2007

Domestic07.jpg

In summary, here is the simplified chart for domestic market shares in KLIA from 2007 until 2012:

2012DomesticShares_zps940daa20.png

  • The domestic market share in 2012 is controlled by AK with a staggering 62%. This is the biggest ever shares ever recorded by AK in the history of its rivalry with MH. MH controlled the remaining 38%. AK's market share for the domestic market in KLIA has been growing steadily from 49% in 2007 to the current number.
  • MH's market share was slightly improved from 36% in 2011 to 38% in 2012. However, in 2011, another 6% of the market share was owned by FY. As a group, MH and FY held 42% of market shares in 2011, which one may argues that MH market shares in 2012 is actually declining (from 42% to 38%).
  • Domestic passengers in KLIA in 2012 was 11,901,268 versus 11,397,711 in 2011 and 10,315,251 in 2010. The growth rate recorded in 2012 is 4.42% versus 10.49% in 2011.
  • 2012 saw MH's domestic passengers increased by 10.8%. However in 2011, the domestic market share in KLIA was shared between 3 airlines following the commencement of FY's jet operation in KLIA in April 2011. The domestic market share was controlled by AK with 58%, followed by MH with 36% of the pie and FY with the remaining 6%. AK's market share was unchanged from 2010 but MH's deteriorated by 6% from 42% in 2010 following FY's entry into the market. Based on pure quantitative ground, FY's entrant in KLIA dids not have any impact to AK at all. The combined market shares of MH and FY in 2011 i.e. 36% + 6% = 42% remained the same with MH's market shares in 2010 i.e. 42%.
  • AK recorded a growth of 11.6% in 2012 versus 10.3% in 2011 for domestic passengers. AK handled 7,349,616 domestic passengers in KLIA in 2012, the highest ever achieved by the airline in a single calendar year.
  • 2013 will welcome a new player, Malindo Air, which is not related to neither MH nor AK, into the market. It is remain to be seen how OD will impact the market shares of the incumbents.

Nice statistic there, MAR !

It is interesting to see despite SIN being the top destinations for KLIA, SQ is not in the top 10 list. Even SIlkair has taking place of SQ, it only ranks no. 9

Thanks for the very detailed analysis of the numbers, Azizul.

2013 will be interesting, with the opening of klia2, Malindo Air, and AK/ D7//QZ's aggressive fleet expansion... It is also interesting to see how MH's fleet modernisation and capacity expansion will impact their numbers.

KLIA is ranked 27th busiest in the world in 2012, up 1 notch from 28th place in 2011.

For airports in the ASEAN region:

CGK - 9th - 57,772,762 pax

BKK - 14th - 53,002,328 pax

SIN - 15th - 51,181,804 pax

KUL - 27th - 39,887,866 pax

Special mention:

  • IST improved the most, up a massive 10 spots from ranking no. 30 in 2011 to no. 20 in 2012.
  • IST is also the airport with the most astounding growth of 20.6%.
  • 5 other airports recorded a double digit growth - DXB (13.2%), CGK (12.1%), ICN (11.3%), BKK (10.6%) and SIN (10%). 3 of them are from the ASEAN region.

Wow!! Amazing how CGK has gone up, special focus on CGK soon I guess, better than SIN and BKK respectively. How many percentage was KUL from the figure in 2011? Thanks Azizul for the data. :clapping:

KUL only recorded a growth of 5.8% from the figures in 2011, i.e. 37,670,586. Comparatively, KUL's fare the weakest among the 4 ASEAN airports in the top 30 ranking. As stated above, CGK, BKK and SIN are all recorded a double digit growth respectively.

A point to note is that CGK is still far from reaching its full potential as the majority of its passengers traffics are domestically driven. The airport is also suffering from a lot of infrastructures constraints. So one could only imagine how high it could achieve in terms of passengers traffics if its international market is maturing and PT Angkasapura has managed to overcome all its infrastructure constraints.

As stated above as well, we might see IST blooming faster than CGK. Based on the numbers and what the Turkish government and TK have on plan, the airport is set to become another DXB.

There is now a new batch of airports that are gunning for a place in the top 10 - CGK and DXB being the prime examples. Some of the airports which were traditionally in the top 10, all of which are located in Europe, are no longer there. FRA, MAD and AMS are no longer linger in the top 10.

While all this is true, KUL's growth has been stunted by lack of capacity in the LCCT and of course by MAS' cutting of routes and capacity.

Now tha KLIA2 is opening and MH is in oneworld and attempting to grow its network and frequencies, we might see KUL grow a bit more.

However, IST and CGKs performance are remarkable. cGK as azizul said, is mostly domestically driven but the room for future growth is there, considering it is the 4th largest country in the world...

MAHB has released the figures for February 2013. For the period of 1 January 2013 until 28 February 2013, KLIA has handled 6,728,459 passengers, up 9.3% from the same in 2012. Looking good. The YTD growth rate of 9.3% is higher than 7.1% projected and hopefully it can be improved even further in the coming months.

Major international airports with the highest number of transit passengers are ATL and FRA. 68% of ATL's 95.5 million passengers in 2012 or 65 million passengers are transit passengers. ATL is also the busiest airport in the world since 1998 until present day. FRA is the world's 11th busiest airport in 2012.

The major international airport which is located the nearest to the city it serves is DXB, which is located within 5 km radius of the Dubai city center. DXB is the world's 10th busiest airport in 2012.

ACI's final 2012 complete report.

KLIA triumphed in 2 out of 3 categories:

  • 27th busiest airport in the world by total passengers traffic with 39,887,866 passengers
  • 30th busiest airport in the world by total cargo traffic with 702,227 metric tonne

KLIA just did not make the list of total aircraft movement.

Singapore Airlines March 2013 Operating Statistics

In March 2013, Singapore Airlines recorded 2.7% year-on-year growth in systemwide passenger carriage (measured in revenue passenger kilometres) while capacity (measured in available seat kilometres) increased by 3.0%. As a result, passenger load factor (PLF) fell by 0.2 percentage points to 79.3%. The number of passengers carried increased by 3.3% to 1.6 million.
Load factors softened across all regions except for East Asia and Americas. South West Pacific route region registered the highest PLF decline, as capacity expansion outpaced the growth in passenger carriage. The operating environment remains challenging, and efforts to stimulate demand to boost loads are expected to place continued downward pressure on yields.
SilkAir’s systemwide passenger carriage (measured in revenue passenger kilometers) increased 6.8% yearon-year against 16.3% growth in capacity (measured in available seat kilometers). As a result, PLF was 6.2 percentage points lower at 69.3%. Load factors for West Asia and East Asia and Pacific regions declined as the increase in traffic lagged the rate of capacity expansion.
Overall cargo traffic (measured in freight-tonne-kilometres) was 1.7% lower year-on-year, whilst cargo capacity decreased by 5.0%. Consequently, cargo load factor (CLF) in March 2013 increased by 2.2 percentage points. CLFs were higher for all route regions through capacity management, except for East Asia where demand did not keep pace with capacity changes.

Phenomenal growth post election into oneworld!

I think RPK would be a more precise parameter to measure the performance than passengers number.

MH's RPK post oneworld:

February +21.9%

March +24.7%

KLIA numbers continue to grow.

KLIAMar2013_zps61f90084.png

From 1 January until 31 March 2013, KLIA handled 10,589,200 passengers, up 11.07% from the same period last year. the growth number is well ahead of the 7.1% projected. The number is split up almost 50-50 between the MTB and the LCCT, with the MTB has a slight margin of 515,500 passengers.

Looks like growth at LCCT is now restricted. It becomes very important for MAHB to get klia2 ready so that growth can continue. I think we are definitely on track to exceed 40m pax this year... :)
