Thank you everyone for your support and vote of confidence. I am not crazy, was just spending my weekend in a productive manner LOL.

Continue on, a little info about the passengers traffic from 1 January until 15 March 2011 for KCH was mentioned in this news article. KCH handled 793,043 passengers during the 2.5 months period.

KIA nation fourth's busiest airport

KUCHING: From January 15 March this year, 793,043 passengers had used the Kuching International Airport (KIA), according to Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Rahim Bakri yesterday.

“The number of passengers was 304,047 in January, 313,772 in February and 175,224 from 1- 15 March.

“For last year, the total number of passengers using KIA was 3.6 million, making it the fourth highest in the country after Kuala Lumpur International Airport (34,087,636), Kota Kinabalu International Airport (5,223,454) and Bayan Lepas International Airport at 4,166,969.” Rahim said KIA is now able to accommodate 5.3 million passengers per year following the upgrading of the airport. It covers a total area of 422.3 hectares and the length and breadth of the airstrip is at 3,780 metres and 46 metres respectively.

International airline companies using KIA include Royal Brunei, Silk Air, Tiger Airways, PT Kalster Aviation and local companies included Malaysia Airline Sistem (MAS), Air Asia, FireFly and MAS Wings.

“The redevelopment of KIA is almost completed. The progress is good for the state’s tourism industry and the economy. This is an important infrastructure to the people of Sarawak.

“The upgrading of Sibu Airport is also progressing well with 20 per cent to 30 per cent of the works completed. The government is looking on how to assist even more.

This shows the Barisan Nasional government fulfills its promises to the people of Sarawak,” he told reporters after a briefing by KIA senior officials at the VVIP section.

The Deputy Minister was on a working visit to the airport.

On complaints that KIA is now congested, Rahim replied that the previous planning did not take into account the presence of lowcost carriers like AirAsia which had brought in many passengers.

He said the government would find ways to overcome the problem by enlarging the passenger area, perhaps under the Second Rolling Plan with funds of less than RM20 million.

Rahim said that investigations into the skipping of an AirAsia aeroplane at the KIA runway some time ago was in the final stage. The runway had no problem, according to him, but bad weather could be one of the reasons.

Also present at the press conference were Sunif Naiman, Senior Manager of KIA and officials from the Department of Civil Aviation.

KLIA Statistics 2010

Continue on with some other route analysis for other regions:

North America

Ranking - Destination - Passengers Traffic - Growth

1. Los Angeles - 29,018 - (-27%)

- KLIA only have 1 destinations connected to North America and it is NOT doing well.

- MH's flights to Los Angeles only recorded 29,018 passengers for the whole year of 2010, down 27% from 39,777 passengers recorded in 2009.

- The breakdown of the figure is 12,674 arrival and 16,344 departure. MH serves LAX 3 weekly B772 throughout the period.

- I tried to calculate the load factor for this flight MH 94/95 but since the flight is operated via TPE, the figures that I got do not make sense (it was too low, like only 81 average passengers per flight on the 282 seater MH B772 aircraft).

- Nevertheless, I think this drop in passengers traffic raises a big concern that this route might probably unprofitable. Even with 3 weekly flights the passengers number is already too low. Should MH reduces the number of flight further? LAX is MH's last frontier in North America. Closing it will be too painful for MH's image and prestige. MH won't be serving all 6 continents in the world if LAX is terminated.

- On cargo movement, LAX recorded 1,262,356 kg of cargo throughput in 2010, an increase of 7.3% from 2009. Maybe cargo is what keeping the route alive.

South America

Ranking - Destination - Passengers Traffic - Growth

1. Buenos Aires - 31,015 - (+21.2%)

- Buenos Aires again proved that it is recorded some good numbers. Passengers traffic increased by 21.2% to 31,015.

- MH serves EZE 2 weekly using B744 via Cape Town.

- On cargo movement, EZE recorded 685,413 kg of cargo, up 33.7% from the same in 2009.

- MH wanted to increase its flight into EZE to 3 weekly in 2010 but it was rejected by the South African government.

- Recent developments show that many of MH's Asian competitors have started venturing into South America - SQ in Sao Paulo, QR in Sao Paolo and Buenos Aires and EK in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires. It would be interesting to see whether this development will have impact on MH's EZE operation. It was made known that the majority of passengers on this flights are those from East Asia connecting with MH to South America.

Europe

Ranking - Destination - Passengers Traffic - Growth

1. London Heathrow - 428,501 - (+6.5%)

2. Amsterdam - 391,174 (+9.6%)

3. London Stansted - 169,651 (+38%)

4. Paris - 155,432 (+24.7%)

5. Frankfurt - 151,573 - (+23.4%)

6. Rome - 70,006 (+19.7%)

7. Istanbul - 67,190 (+138.7%)

- All destinations in Europe recorded a growth in 2010. Total passengers movement increased by 14.5% to 1,433,984 in 2010.

- Heathrow recorded the highest passengers traffic. Again proven that even though D7 also serves London in Stansted, MH's traffic is not affected at all in fact even growing by 6.5%.

- Stansted further grown by 38% in 2010.

- Cumulatively, traffic to/from London (Heathrow and Stansted) accounted for 42% or 598,152 passengers from the overall traffic for Europe.

- Amongst the 7 destinations, Istanbul recorded the highest growth of 138.7% to 67,190 passengers in 2010. This is contributed by the fact that MH increased its service from 2 to 3 weekly, aircraft is upgraded from A332 to B772 and the former routing via DXB is abolished.

- Load factor calculation on MH's flights for Heathrow (flight MH 1/2/3/4):

Total departure: 214,278 passengers

Total arrival: 214,223 passengers

No. of departing flight (MH 2/4) = 2 daily service x 365 days = 730 flights

No. of arrival flight (MH 1/3) = 2 daily service x 365 days = 730 flights

No. of seats on MH's B744 = 359 seats

Average load factor for departing (KUL-LHR flight MH 2/4) flight in 2010 = 214,278 passengers/730 flights/359 seats = 81.8% (very good load factor)

Average load factor for arrival (LHR-KUL flight MH 1/3) flight in 2010 = 214,223 passengers/730 flights/359 seats = 81.7% (very good load factor)

- 2011 will see Paris Orly makes a debut in the chart following D7's entry into the airport on 14 February 2011. It is interesting to see how it will fare and whether it will have positive effect to MH's CDG operation like what happened in London where both MH and D7 grow in their respective market segments.

Good analysis , but I wondering if KL - Singapore route has become world 10 busiest route by passengers or no?

I think that is quite difficult to determine unless you have the traffic data of the other routes.

In 2010, traffic for Singapore increased by 10% to 2,734,086 passengers. Singapore is the destination with the highest passengers traffic for KLIA. The KUL-SIN vv route is served by 7 airlines - MH, AK, SQ, MI, Jetstar Asia, Tiger Airways and Sri Lankan.

A head up from tayser of A.Net regarding the busiest international routes from Australia. KUL-MEL vv is in the top 10, with one of the highest growth.

autop10jan2011.png

The report also contained a list of 10 airlines with the largest international market shares in Australia from January 2009 to January 2011, as follows:

1. Qantas 18.9%

2. Singapore Airlines 9.2%

3. Air New Zealand 8.2%

4. Jetstar 8.1%

5. Emirates 8.1%

6. Pacific Blue 6.2%

7. Cathay Pacific 5.2%

8. Malaysia Airlines 3.8%

9. Thai Airways 3.2%

10. AirAsia X 2.8%

Both MH and D7 are among the 10 largest international airlines in Australia. Cumulatively, both Malaysian airlines control 6.6% of the international market shares in Australia. MH used to command a higher market shares in Australia, but it has lost some grounds due to competition from newer entrants into the market like EK in the past few years.

Wonder why MH not as strong in SYD?

And I also wondered why MH allowed EK & D7 to enter KUL-MEL, it was the only destination with double daily flights in Australia at the time. Weren't they afraid that the 2 new entrants would steal their market share? The MEL to Malaysia market is growing rapidly year on year

Maybe MEL is NOT IMPORTANT enough? If so then my business is going to D7 & EK and even SQ at least they send the A380 to MEL ;)

Still not touching on the issue of their tired looking MEL Golden Club Lounge, very poor conditions and food selections

Does MH or AK ever publish the most and least profitable routes? It will be interesting to see these figures o_O

We can sort of figure it out through the passengers traffic info, growth rate and competition on the route. Here is the ranking of destination from KLIA by passengers traffic [of more than 100,000 movements only] which is served by MH and AK/D7 exclusively (meaning they are having a monopoly on the route):

Top Destinations Which Are Served by MH ONLY in KLIA by Passengers Traffic

Ranking - Destination - Passengers Traffic - Growth

1. London Heathrow - 428,501 - (+6.5%)

2. Sydney - 301,417 - (+16.1%)

3. Paris CDG - 155,432 - (+24.7%)

4. Osaka - 129,699 - (+3.9%)

5. Auckland - 113,364 - (+16.8%)

6. Adelaide - 101,069 - (+16.4%)

Top Destinations Which Are Served by AK ONLY in KLIA by Passengers Traffic

Ranking - Destination - Passengers Traffic - Growth

1. Macau - 269,105 - (-6.6%)

2. Padang - 127,267 - (-5.8%)

3. Chiang Mai - 101,346 - (+11.8%)

Top Destinations Which Are Served by D7 ONLY in KLIA by Passengers Traffic

Ranking - Destination - Passengers Traffic - Growth

1. Hangzhou - 205,913 - (+33.7%)

2. Gold Coast - 190,232 - (+49.2%)

3. London Stansted - 169,651 - (+38%)

4. Chengdu - 142,730 - (+486.5%)

5. Tianjin - 119,649 - (+68.6%)

Although it might not be accurate (because we have to take into consideration the routes which the airlines share with other airlines as per ranking in reply #207 above), we can now sort of figure out which routes are making money for the airlines WITH the assumption that higher passengers traffic is imperative to higher profitability.

Some notes:

- From MH Only list, we could see that the top 4 destinations are the one that D7 also wanted to serve. They have succeed with London and Paris but at a different airport. And it is no secret that they are wanting Sydney and Osaka too. I am quite sure if the government awarded SYD and KIX to D7, next in their wishlist will be AKL and ADL.

- From AK Only list, we can see that their market has been saturated in the top 2 destinations, which is exhibited by the decline in passengers traffic.

- From D7 Only list, we could tell that the airline is doing very well. They have 5 destinations out of 13 (15 destinations minus Paris Orly and Christchurch which are launched in 2011), that's 38.5% of their total network, which recorded passengers traffic of more than 100,000 movements and all 5 of them recorded a very high growth of at least 33%.

Also I found out that...

Top Destinations Which Are Served by Foreign Airlines ONLY in KLIA by Passengers Traffic

Ranking - Destination - Passengers Traffic - Growth - Airlines

1. Doha - 245,320 - (+73.3%) - Qatar Airways

2. Abu Dhabi - 172,934 - (+83.3%) - Etihad Airways

3. Bahrain - 117,762 - (+24.8%) - Gulf Air

3 airlines from the Middle East enjoyed an extremely high passengers traffic and growth rate from their respective hubs to KLIA and they have a monopoly on the route. This also proved that the Middle East airlines in KLIA (12 of them altogether) are stealing a lot of passengers from Malaysia to fly to their final destinations through these Middle Eastern hubs.

Speaking of airlines from the Middle East, I believe EK should be at no. 1 (since DXB is the 8th largest destination in KLIA with 568,238 passengers) but since the route is shared between EK, MH and IY, we could not determine the exact number for EK but still, based on frequency numbers - EK 21 weekly, MH 7 weekly, IY 2 weekly - EK definitely command a very strong market share on the route [21/(21+7+2) x 568,238 passengers = 397,766 passengers for EK on KUL-DXB route].

Does MH or AK ever publish the most and least profitable routes? It will be interesting to see these figures o_O

We have seen the gainers and the best in the market segmentations, now let's analyse the losers.

There are 121 destinations with direct flights in KLIA in 2010, and from that number, given the bullish year for air travel in 2010 in general, only 22 destinations recorded a decline in passengers traffic. However, these 22 destinations can be categorized into 3 groups.

1. Destinations that recorded a decline in passengers traffic due to the suspension/termination of the routes

Ranking - Destination - Passengers Traffic - Growth - Airline

1. Stockholm - 457 - (-98.7%) - MH

2. Manado - 4,636 - (-84.4%) - AK

3. Palembang - 11,049 - (-84.1%) - AK

4. Cebu - 4,731 - (-35.3%) - MH

Notes:

- AK suspended PLM somewhere in 2010 but relaunched it again in 2011. Therefore we could expect PLM numbers to soar in 2011's statistics.

2. Destinations that recorded a decline in passengers traffic but these destinations are a one off, seasonal or charter destinations

Ranking - Destination - Passengers Traffic - Growth

1. Wuhan - 164 - (-64.7%)

2. Dili - 158 - (-55.9%)

3. Chongqing - 490 - (-35.4%)

4. Xian - 699 - (-11.3%)

And the list that most matter...

3. Destinations that recorded a decline in passengers traffic under normal circumstances, also the worst performers for KLIA in 2010

Ranking - Destination - Passengers Traffic - Growth - Airline

1. Beirut - 16,544 - (-81.2%) - MH

2. Sanaa - 14,750 - (-80.9%) - IY

3. Riyadh - 49,158 - (-41%) - SV

4. Dammam - 13,033 - (-34.1%) - MH and SV

5. Haikou - 42,785 - (-28%) - AK

6. Los Angeles - 29,018 - (-27%) - MH

7. Madinah - 30,787 - (-18.7%) - SV

8. Shenzen - 241,631 - (-6.7%) - AK

9. Clark - 86,393 - (-6.6%) - AK

10. Macau - 269,105 - (-6.6%) - AK

11. Padang - 127,267 - (-5.8%) - AK

12. Guilin - 69,466 - (-3%) - AK

13. Banda Acheh - 55,372 - (-2.8%) - AK

14. Tashkent - 28,870 - (-0.5%) - Uzbekistan Airways

Notes:

- The worst performer for KLIA in 2010 is BEY, which caught me by surprised actually. Passengers traffic plummeted 81.2% from 88,111 passengers in 2009 to only 16,544 passengers in 2010. What happened MH? Are the Lebanese suddenly lost interest with us? As far as I concern, the frequency on the route stays at 3 weekly even until today. So I suspect MH's demand on the route is fast eroding, probably in view of competition from other airlines from the Middle East region.

- The 2nd worst performer is Sanaa, which is served by Yemenia. I am not fluent with IY's schedule to KLIA, this massive reduction in passengers traffic could be due to reduction of frequency.

- All routes involving Saudi Arabian Airlines except Jeddah recorded a decline in passengers traffic. SV is definitely not doing well in KLIA in 2010 and seen here as the most badly affected airline in terms of decline in passengers traffic.

- Haikou ranked 5th worst in the list and it is the worst performer for AK. AK has since terminated/suspended the route beginning March/April 2011.

- Also worrying is the numbers for LAX, which dropped by 27%. MH serves the route 3 weekly and I suspect it is not profitable. Will MH hold on to its last frontier in North America?

- The other destinations (from no. 8 to 14) are all just recorded a marginal decline in passengers numbers. 3 of the routes are actually one of AK's best performers in terms of the total passengers traffic [more than 100,000 movements] despite the decline.

Wow, I'm quite surprised ADL is at no. 6, and not MEL or PER, which receive more flights.

Thanks, Azizul, those figures are really interesting to see.

Read carefully, that ranking comes with a lot of disclaimers. MEL and PER could be more profitable and bring more passengers traffic for MH than ADL but since the routes are shared by several airlines, we could not determined the numbers.

We can sort of figure it out through the passengers traffic info, growth rate and competition on the route. Here is the ranking of destination from KLIA by passengers traffic [of more than 100,000 movements only] which is served by MH and AK/D7 exclusively (meaning they are having a monopoly on the route):

Top Destinations Which Are Served by MH ONLY in KLIA by Passengers Traffic

Ranking - Destination - Passengers Traffic - Growth

1. London Heathrow - 428,501 - (+6.5%)

2. Sydney - 301,417 - (+16.1%)

3. Paris CDG - 155,432 - (+24.7%)

4. Osaka - 129,699 - (+3.9%)

5. Auckland - 113,364 - (+16.8%)

6. Adelaide - 101,069 - (+16.4%)

Although it might not be accurate (because we have to take into consideration the routes which the airlines share with other airlines as per ranking in reply #207 above), we can now sort of figure out which routes are making money for the airlines WITH the assumption that higher passengers traffic is imperative to higher profitability.

If we were to plug in MEL and PER into that ranking, it could look like this:

MH's passengers traffic for MEL = 14 weekly/(14 weekly MH + 7 weekly EK + 7 weekly? D7) x 709,209 passengers = 354,605 passengers

MH's passengers traffic for PER = 9 weekly/(9 weekly MH + 7 weekly? D7) x 424,796 passengers = 238,948 passengers

So as shown above, MH passengers numbers for MEL and PER are higher than ADL but there are several issues:

- The quantification using % of the weekly frequency is not accurate and not reliable.

- I am not sure of the exact weekly frequency of D7's flights into both MEL and PER. D7 might have different weekly frequency sets to these 2 destinations throughout 2010 which will complicate the calculation.

- There is no way to get the correct figures unless 2 of the 3 airlines involved reveal their actual numbers.

Anyhow, MH recently increased ADL from 4 weekly to 6 weekly, so definitely its number will soar even more in 2011's stats.

If there is domestic performance for KLIA, i think it is more interesting as at least 3 routes will be at >1m passengers chart

But, y MAHB dun want to include that in the annual report? :sorry:

I agree with you. Sure fire BKI, PEN and KCH are also recorded more than 1 million passengers movement to/from KLIA.

.

.

.

On another development, MAHB has released the traffic statistics for KLIA in the month of February 2011 as per their announcement to Bursa Malaysia. To ease our monitoring, I'll present the data in graphical method beginning this month:

KLIAFeb2011.jpg

FEBRUARY 2011

Total monthly passengers' traffic = 2,798,158 (818,806 Domestic + 1,979,352 International)

Total passengers' traffic YTD 2011 until 28 February 2011 = 5,782,232 (1,665,904 Domestic + 4,116,328 International)

As a comparison, during the first 2 months of 2010, KLIA recorded 5,133,415 passengers (1,571,361 Domestic + 3,562,054 International). This represents a growth of 12.64%. KLIA is on track to record impressive numbers this year! Just a note, February is historically the month with the lowest passengers traffic in a year for KLIA.

Koko Crunch LOL! I really hope the presentation is concise and easy to understand for all.

.

MH kicked off the airline's stats for 2011 with the uploading of their stats for January and February 2011 respectively:

http://malaysiaairlines.listedcompany.com/misc/operational_statistics_Jan2011.pdf

http://malaysiaairlines.listedcompany.com/misc/operational_statistics_Feb2011.pdf

It is of utmost important that we keep on pushing and compare ourself with the industry leader. For this year's airline stats, I plan to benchmark MH's data against the world's best. And therefore from this point onwards, we'll include SQ's stats under our microscope as well. Coincidentally, they have also published their operational statistics for the month of January and February 2011 as follows:

http://www.singaporeair.com/saa/en_UK/docs/company_info/investor/operating/SIA_Jan11.pdf

http://www.singaporeair.com/saa/en_UK/docs/company_info/investor/operating/SIA_Feb11.pdf

Here is the summary of YTD passengers data from 1 January 2011 until 28 February 2011 of MH and SQ:

AirlineStatsFEB11.jpg

Some key notes:

- Size wise, MH's capacity is only 47% of SQ's.

- MH's systemwide passengers carried is 46% of SQ's.

- MH's load factor is 1.3 percentage point lesser than SQ.

- MH's total passenger is 657,000 lesser than SQ.

- Perusing MH's stats, it is very apparent that the domestic sector is not doing well for the first 2 months of 2011. Load factors for MH domestic sector flights are very low at only 58% in January and 57.6% in February 2011. This raises a big concern whether MH should continue serving the domestic routes especially in view that its LCC arm Firefly has started venturing into some of its domestic trunk routes.

- The breakdown of MH's 2,058,000 passengers are [651,000 domestic + 1,407,000 international]. The international passenger number is an increase of 9.8% from 2010 but the domestic passengers number is a decrement of 11.1% from 2010.

- Comparing with the same corresponding period in 2010, MH recorded an overall passengers growth of 2.2%. On the same scheme, SQ recorded a growth of 2.0%. MH recorded a higher passengers growth than SQ by 0.2 percentage point.

MASwings' passengers traffic in 2010 and 2009 was briefly mentioned in this interview with the new MD of the airline. http://www.theborneopost.com/?p=122840

With new measures prompted by Mohd Salleh, MASwings had successfully phased out the Fokker fleet last year, revamping its fleet into having 10 units of the more efficient ATR 72-500s. To note, the carrier flew about 1.2 million passangers last year; a rise from the total 970,000 passengers in 2009.

I am also excited with the fact that MASwings is going to relaunch KCH-PNK, a route very dear to me, in the near future.

Your stats comparing MH and SQ are interesting!

ASK/RPK relationship is linear between the two. So too are passenger numbers. So, on the linear scale MH is actually doing quite well with what they have - but only in terms of these figures.

The interesting stats will come from financial reports when you compare the airlines operating costs/revenues with external income and the overall net profit.

Ceteris Paribus - we should see MAS performing at about 45% that of SQ based on what you have shown us above - but we all know this is far from the truth.

However, as a stock - One could be quite moved by your above indications.
