Airports' & Airlines' Operational Statistics

Recommended Posts

That's good to hear. MH's prices in J to Europe (especially from Australia) are very competitive and I can understand that that puts pressure on yields but having a paying passenger in J has got to be more profitable than a paying passenger in Y.

3Q13: Full Impact of Fare War Unfolds

Looking for value to emerge. The 3Q13 results season is underway and it promises to be an interesting quarter. The operating statistics are impressive, with robust traffic growth of 22.6% YoY and all the airlines

delivered high load factors. Malaysia Airports Holdings (MAHB) has already released its 3Q13 financial results on 31 Oct. Malaysian Airlines (MAS) will be the first airline to release its 3Q13 results on 18 Nov, followed by AirAsia X on 19 Nov and AirAsia on 20 Nov. We are Neutral on the sector as we feel the valuations aptly reflect the fundamentals.

MAS and Malindo Air leads the traffic growth. In 9M13, passenger traffic growth in Malaysia was 16.6% YoY, making it the second highest in Asia Pacific. As shown in the table below, MAS carried 41.1% more

passengers YoY in 3Q13 and this constituted 36% of the total industry growth. Other airlines’ traffic has grown by 21% YoY and this constituted 45% of the total industry growth. Malindo Air does not divulge its operating statistics, but we believe it formed the biggest chunk of the growth in the “other airlines”. AirAsia’s growth is relatively low at 10.8% and constituted 13.7% of the industry growth. This is due to the LCCT congestion issue whereby there is limited space to grow.

Mind blowing KLIA traffic growth. KLIA’s 9M13 traffic growth of 18.1% makes it the fastest growing major airport [major airport means carrying >30m passengers p.a.] in the world. We expect this growth

momentum to continue and KLIA will probably finish the year with 47m-48m passengers, ranking it between the 18-20th busiest airport in the world at the end of 2013.

3Q13 reflects the outcome of ‘mother of all fare wars’. We expect yield deterioration to persist in 3Q13, at a slightly faster pace to 2Q13. This view is based on our observation that :1) Malaysia’s traffic growth

has been much more rapid than the rest of Asia; and 2) published ticket prices on selected routes (Kuala Lumpur to Penang, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Miri) are the cheapest ever in living memory and we think they

are priced below cost. Everyone is fixated in maintaining its market share and is adhering to the “load active, yield passive” strategy.

Just had the time to browse through the stats for MAHB.

This is the breakdown of the number of passengers and its segregation between MTB and LCCT for domestic and international sectors:

KLIA3Q2013_zps63bb6092.png

Some notes:

  • So far up until 30 September 2013, MTB growth doubles the figure of the same of the LCCT - 24.02% vs 11.80%.
  • Domestic sector at MTB is the segment which grows the highest 37.76% - I can safely say much contributed by the traffic brought in by Malindo.

And this is the latest number of passengers' movement at KLIA as at 31 October 2013:

MAHBOct13_zps44ff0505.png

KLIA handled 38,466,124 passengers up until 31 October 2013, up an astounding 18.6% from the same figure in 2012. Comparing the growth as at 30 September and 31 October (18.09% vs 18.6%) KLIA really does a smashing job with the numbers.

However,

Mind blowing KLIA traffic growth. KLIA’s 9M13 traffic growth of 18.1% makes it the fastest growing major airport [major airport means carrying >30m passengers p.a.] in the world. We expect this growth momentum to continue and KLIA will probably finish the year with 47m-48m passengers, ranking it between the 18-20th busiest airport in the world at the end of 2013.

I do not think KLIA is the fastest growing airport in the world. The last time I paired up all the numbers, KLIA was ranked 3rd behind IST and DXB, both of which recorded a growth in the region of +20%.

Nevertheless, indeed KLIA's growth is mind blowing and it is a signed and sealed fact that 2013 figures will surpass 40 million passengers for the first time and ultimately becoming the best ever number recorded in the history of our country. Using the current 10 months cumulative growth rate against the year end 2012 figure (1.186 x 39,887,866), we are looking at at least 47,307,009 passengers come year end.

I would like to retract my earlier statement. KLIA is indeed the fastest growing airport among the top 30 airports in the world. Simply wow and I am genuinely surprised that we have overtook IST and DXB!

Figures as at 31 August 2013:

ACIAug2013_zpsd2fd2eff.png

Some notes:

  • As at the end of August 2013, KLIA is the 21st busiest airport in the world. This is the highest ever placement for KLIA in the ranking by far.
  • KLIA is also the airport with the highest growth (+17.2%) followed closely by DXB (+16.4%) and IST (+15.9%). These 3 airports are also the only ones which recorded a double digit growth in the lot.
  • SIN overtook BKK for the first time. This is a headline!
  • 4 airports from the ASEAN region are getting stronger in the world's top 30 list - CGK (11th), SIN (13th), BKK (17th) and KLIA (21st).
  • The margin between KLIA (4th in ASEAN) and BKK (3rd in ASEAN) is a rather mere 3,950,005 passengers. Who would have thought that? There will be a day in the not too distant future where KLIA handles more passengers than Suvarnabhumi, I am now convinced.
  • Special mention - Barajas. Such a devastating numbers recorded for what was once a top 10 airport in the world a few years back. It shows how economic slump has adverse effects to airport performance.

I don't at the moment but with some time and a few serious Google searches we might bump into something. I also have a feeling that the re-opening of DMK which saw FD and AK leaving BKK for good had caused the latter's growth to slow down.

Latest update of the ranking as at 30 September 2013:

ACISep13_zps3ccf406a.png

Some notes:

  • No changes for KLIA from the August 2013 ranking. KLIA is still the 21st busiest airport in the world.
  • KLIA remains as the airport with the highest growth in the world. KLIA improves its average annual cumulative growth number to +18.1% from +17.2% in August ranking. DXB's number drop slightly to +16.0% from +16.4% and IST's somehow further slipping down to +14.9% from +15.9% in August. These 3 airports remain the only ones which recorded a double digit growth in the lot.
  • SIN continues to be ahead of BKK.
  • The ranking of the 4 ASEAN airports in the world's top 30 list ([x] denotes ranking in August) - CGK (11th) [11th], SIN (14th) [13th], BKK 18th [17th] and KLIA (21st) [21st]. The ranking of SIN was brought down a notch by AMS while BKK was upset by IST.
  • The margin between KLIA (4th in ASEAN) and BKK (3rd in ASEAN) is 3,992,809, up from 3,950,005 passengers in August.

I have a question. Why does Atlanta consistently record such high number of passengers? Even more than LAX or New York?

This link might answer your question: :)

http://www.bbc.com/travel/blog/20130207-why-is-atlanta-the-worlds-busiest-airport

"According to data collected by Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, Atlanta is located within a two-hour flight of 80% of the US population, making the city a major port of entry into the US and a logical stopover for travel within the expansive country."

"Hartsfield-Jackson also happens to be located in a city that attracts its fair share of travellers. Atlanta has been ranked the seventh most visited city for business travel in the US – unsurprising, since it is home to the headquarters of 10 Fortune 500 companies, including Coca-Cola, Home Depot (a massive home improvement retailer), UPS (the United Parcel Service) and, of course, Delta Air Lines."

"For non-business visitors, Atlanta is also home to perhaps the world’s largest aquarium, where visitors can find the biggest fish on Earth. Rivalled only by the new SEA Aquarium in Singapore (which also calls itself the world’s largest), the Georgia Aquarium holds more than 8 million gallons of water and provides habitat to around 120,000 animals, according to aquarium statistics."

ATL is primarily a domestic hub for Delta and Southwest. While LAX and NY airports ranked higher in terms of international passenger movement.

KLIA has finally surpassed the 40 million passengers mark!

Numbers as at 30 November 2013:

MAHBNov13_zps755dbfe9.png

KLIA could add another 4-5 million passengers more in December 2013.

The average cumulative growth rate is increasing to 18.7% from 18.6% as at late October 2013 thus further putting KLIA as front runner for the major airport with the highest growth rate in the world in 2013.

What do you guys mean by gloomy feel? Ain't that making the airport best to sleep?

u are right Mr Mike P, im always feeling sleepy when at KLIA. the best ever airport to have a nap.

actually i mean, MAHB should add some attractive scenery inside airport..like waterfall, a small lake for fish, some beaches.

but please dont be like Istanbul airport...too much people..crowding..busy n hectic.

i have been there two times... cant sleep even for a minute.

What do you guys mean by gloomy feel? Ain't that making the airport best to sleep in?

I feel KLIA is gloomy as well, especially around departure/arrival gates at Satellite terminal. Even during the day, the whole area feels a bit dingy.

The gloomy feeling is even worse when you step off a flight from Changi - a world of difference!

Btw, when can we expect the full year results for KUL?

MAHB should start taking a closer look at the Main Terminal Building now that klia2 is close to completion. You can feel & see the neglect due to diverted resources.

MAHB is bad at multitasking and even worse at project management!

It is quite unfair to ask pax to pay higher airport tax (than LCCT) and then give them a third world terminal. With the increase in pax traffic, MAHB's accounts will look great. It is about time that MAHB reinvested some of that Airport tax collection in pax amenities. They could learn a lot from SIN's Changi...

Btw, when can we expect the full year results for KUL?

Who know when MAHB to release its Financial statistic for the year 2013??

cant wait anymore to see its success!!

We should be able to see the December 2013 and the full year 2013 figures by the end of this month.

However for the detailed annual statistics, we would have to wait until the Annual Report is published.
