MAHB August 2012 Traffic Report

 

 

For August 2012, MAHB operated airports handled 5.7 million passengers, an increase of 13.1% compared to the same period in 2011. Most of the airports operated by the Group registered double digit growth. International passengers increased by 9.6% while domestic passengers rose by 16.7%. The domestic airlines achieved good domestic growth due to the higher festive and school holidays travel demand and lower base in 2011. The higher international sector contribution came from AirAsia Group, Firefly and collectively other foreign airlines all of which individually recorded good double digit year-on-year growth for August 2012.

 

KLIA’s passenger movements registered 11.9% year-on-year increase. Twenty three international airlines operating at KLIA recorded an impressive double digit growth for August 2012. The increase in international passengers was driven mainly by passengers to and from Middle East, South East Asia and Central Asia.

 

Aircraft movements increased from 52,492 in August 2011 to 54,907 in August 2012. International and domestic movements increased by 6.7% and 3.4% respectively. Similar to other airports in the region, cargo movements continue to record a negative growth. It was down by 3.0% in comparison with August last year.

 

Year to date up to August, MAHB Group of airports handled 43.8 million passenger movements. This translates into 4.3% growth compared to the first eight months in 2011 last year.

KLIA handled 29,126,600 passengers up until 30 September 2012. This represents an increase of 4.18% (which is rather lackluster since KLIA has been recording double digit growth for years) from the same record breaking number last year.

 

Note that the domestic pax movement at the MTB decreased by 11%, while the same at the LCCT increased by 14%.

 

LCCT has been handling 14.1 million pax within 9 months period, closely to exceed its annual capacity of 15 million pax per annum. Rest assured the number will be exceeded this month.

One of the reasons why growth has slowed down might be due to the fact that the LCCT is already operating at above designed capacity. So growth will moderate until more airlines call at the MTB and/or the KLIA2 opens.

AirAsia Records Strong Load Factor In Q3

 

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 30 (Bernama) -- AirAsia Bhd today announced that Malaysia AirAsia recorded strong load factor of 77 per cent in the third quarter of 2012.

 

The low cost airline said Malaysia AirAsia's capacity increased by 10 per cent year-on-year as part of its strategy to increase frequencies on trunk routes during the holiday period.

 

In a statement Tuesday, it said Malaysia AirAsia was operating 59 aircraft as at the end of the reviewed quarter.

 

The company also reported that Thai AirAsia posted high load factor of 82 per cent in the period with approximately 2.0 million passengers carried.

 

It attributed strong tourism as a factor for the high growth.

 

It said Indonesia AirAsia also posted high load factor of 78 per cent with the peak Ramadhan holiday time during the reviewed period as a factor.

Singapore Airlines pax numbers up 7% but cargo down 11% in Oct-2012

 

In October 2012, Singapore Airlines' systemwide passenger carriage (measured in revenue passenger kilometres) rose 7.1% against 5.6% growth in capacity (measured in available seat kilometres). As a result, passenger load factor (PLF) improved by 1.1 percentage points to 77.8%. The number of passengers carried increased by 7.1% to 1.5 million.

 

Systemwide PLF improved on the back of increased promotional activities, especially on long haul sectors to Americas and Europe route regions. PLF on the South West Pacific route region declined as growth in demand was outpaced by the increase in capacity. Ongoing efforts to stimulate demand will continue to put pressure on yields.

 

SilkAir’s systemwide passenger carriage increased 20.2% year-on-year against 19.4% growth in capacity. As a result, PLF was 0.5 of a percentage point higher at 74.3%. PLFs on West Asia routes reported a yearon-year increase of 4.8 percentage points as market conditions remained healthy in developing markets. PLF for East Asia and Pacific routes declined 1.5 percentage points as the growth in traffic lagged that of capacity increase. On 28 October 2012, SilkAir launched 3 times weekly scheduled services to Visakhapatnam, the carrier’s eighth online destination in India.

 

Overall cargo traffic (measured in freight-tonne-kilometres) was 13.1% lower year-on-year, while cargo capacity decreased by 9.9%. Consequently, cargo load factor (CLF) decreased by 2.4 percentage points. CLF decreased for all route regions, except for Europe, in spite of lower capacity. The East Asia route region was the only exception where capacity increased marginally by 1.1% arising from cargo capacity on passenger aircraft. The air cargo market remains depressed and the near-term outlook continues to be challenging.

KLIA handled 35,965,600 passengers for the period of 1 January 2012 until 30 November 2012. This represent a growth of 5.3%.

 

KLIA is short of 4,034,400 passengers to reach a milestone 40 million annual passengers. Can that amount be achieved in December 2012?

 

KLIA recorded the following numbers:

3,306,740 passengers in October 2012 (8.2% growth from October 2011)

3,532,165 passengers in November 2012 (13.1% growth from November 2011)

3,564,328 passengers in December 2011 (5.6% growth from December 2010)

 

To record 4,034,400 passengers in December 2012 is equal to a jump of 13.2% from the December 2011 figure, which is quite a long shot but still achievable.

 

Personally, this is genuinely exciting. I can't wait for the figures for the final month to be revealed. I hope KLIA will make it. *fingers crossed* For KLIA to record 40 million passengers in 2012 is just phenomenal!

 

On another development, unfortunately to us, Airport Council International does not reveal the monthly data of the top 30 airports in the world anymore since August 2012. Hence, I cannot rank the numbers for KLIA above with the other airports, but trust KLIA will remain in the top 30. MAHB also has not been reporting its year-to-date figures in its month submission to Bursa Malaysia anymore since July 2012. One needs to compile the data each month in order to generate the figures as illustrated above.

Thanks MAR for the data. I think MHAB should be able to record 40 million passengers or maybe a short of few thousands, since December is usually holliday season. Not to mention LCC like Jetstar, Tiger Airways, Tiger Mandala and AirAsia added additional flight during the month. How significant the number of pax brought by 'doggy' airlines like BB Airways of Nepal, Mahan Air etc remain mystery.

 

I was flying off to SIN the other days, both Nepal Airlines and BB Airways of Nepal flights were cancelled. Mahan Air flight was cancelled as well. Seems like KLIA is attracting 'number' of airlines operating out of KLIA; Not 'quality' of an airline.

 

Firefly flight to Haikou was cancelled.

SINGAPORE, Dec 28 (Bernama) -- Singapore Changi Airport will end 2012 with a new milestone in its history, registering more than 50 million passenger movements for the year.

This traffic record is reached just two years after Changi Airport crossed the 40-million milestone in 2010.

To commemorate this significant occasion, Changi Airport Group (CAG) today held a celebratory event, in partnership with Indonesia's national carrier Garuda Indonesia, to welcome the arrival of Flight GA824 from Jakarta to Singapore, the second busiest international air route in the world.

GA824 touched down at Changi Airport at 1018 hours to a water canon salute and lively fanfare.

Five lucky passengers were selected to take part in an exciting game show at Changi Airport's Departure Transit area.

One of them, Prayanto Inkarani, a 24-year-old lawyer from Jakarta, walked away with the top prize of S$50,000 worth of shopping vouchers and retail products from Changi Airport, as well as a pair of Singapore-Jakarta Executive Class air tickets sponsored by Garuda Indonesia.

The other four passengers each received S$1,000 in Changi Dollar Vouchers.

Changi Airport handled 46.3 million passengers from January to November 2012.

This 11-month figure is already close to the 46.5 million passenger movements achieved for the whole of 2011.

Robust double-digit growth in travel to and from Northeast Asia and South Asia contributed to the increase in passenger traffic since the start of the year.

Traditionally strong markets such as Southeast Asia, Southwest Pacific and Europe also continued to grow healthily, accentuating Changi's status as a major air hub in the Asia-Pacific region.

Lee Seow Hiang, CAG's Chief Executive Officer, said: "Despite a sluggish global economy and an uncertain outlook for air travel, Changi Airport has risen against the challenges to deliver another record-breaking year in 2012.

"This is the outcome of our strong partnerships with airlines like Garuda and concerted proactive efforts with them to grow air links and increase flight frequencies."

In terms of passenger traffic, Indonesia remains Changi Airport's top country market, accounting for 13.4 per cent of total traffic handled at Changi from January to November 2012.

During this period some 6.2 million passenger movements to and from Indonesia were registered, representing a healthy 8.6 per cent growth for the market on a year-on-year basis.

There is strong connectivity between Indonesia and Singapore, with a wide network of air links to 16 Indonesian cities via 1,000 weekly flights operated by 16 airlines.

Two other Singapore routes - to Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok - are also among the world's five busiest international routes based on seat capacity.

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 2 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Airports Holdings Bhd's (MAHB) said passenger movements in November 2012 at airports operated by it grew 9.9 per cent over November last year.

"International passengers increased by 13.1 per cent while the domestic movements increased by 7.1 per cent.

"For the international sector Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia and the foreign airlines each as a group registered double-digit growth over November 2011," it said.

For Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), the increase for MAS and AirAsia was in the region of 16 per cent, while domestic movements momentum has also picked up from the 4 per cent average range to above 7 per cent in November 2012, it said.

Aircraft movements registered 54,354 movements, an increase of 4.1 per cent compared with 52,231 for November last year, MAHB said, adding international movements increased by 11.4 per cent whilst the domestic sector was down marginally by 0.04 per cent.

KLIA international movements increased by 13.7 per cent and the domestic sector grew by 5.2 per cent, but cargo movements continued to register another decline by 4.6 per cent from November 2011, it added.

"It is expected that December will be another good month for passengers," it said.

AirAsia Group carried 33.8m passengers in 2012, up 13% on-year

 

KUALA LUMPUR: AirAsia Group carried 33.826 million passengers in the financial year ended Dec 31, 2012 (FY12) an increase of 13% from the 29.859 million carried in 2011.

 

The low-cost carrier said on Monday the increase in FY12 was also in line with its capacity, based on the number of seats flown, which rose 13% also to 42.423 million from 37.505 million.

 

Its load factor, based on the number of passengers carried as a percentage of capacity, was unchanged at 80%.

 

AirAsia said year-on-year, Malaysia AirAsia, Thai AirAsia and Indonmesia AirAsia took in an additional 17 aircraft, increasing the group's total fleet to 113 at the end of 2012. If Philippines' AirAsia and AirAsia Japan were included, this would increase to 118 aircraft.

 

For the fourth quarter ended Dec 31, 2012 (Q412), Malaysia AirAsia posted a high load factor of 82%. It carried 5.205 million passengers, a 7% increase on-year from 4.854 million, which is in line with the increase in capacity.

 

The increase in capacity was to cater to the additional frequencies on existing routes and five new routes. They were Kuala Lumpur-Lombok, KL-Nanning, KL-Kunming, Kota Kinabalu-Guangzhou and KL-Solo (re-launched).

 

It said Malaysia AirAsia added five new aircraft in Q412 and had 64 aircraft as of end-2012. Thai AirAsia recorded a load factor of 82% in Q412, up 4% on-year. It carried 2.272 million passengers, up 25% versus capacity increase of 19%.

 

Since it started operating from Don Mueang International Airport on Oct 1, it had started three new routes. They were Bangkok-Mandalay, Bangkok-Wuhan and Bangkok-Xian. It added two aircraft in Q412, increasing the total fleet to 27 aircraft. As for Indonesia AirAsia, it recorded a strong load factor of 76% in Q412 with about 1.613 million passengers carried, up 29% on-year. The 31% increase in capacity from the same period in 2011 was to support the increase in frequencies and the additional seven new routes.

The figure is out. KLIA did not make it by a very thin margin.

 

KLIA recorded 3,922,266 passengers in December 2012, which brings the complete one year figure to 39,887,866 passengers, 112,134 shy away from a monumental achievement of passing the 40 million passengers mark for the first time. Nevertheless, the figure is still the best ever recorded by KLIA in the history of our country. It is 5.8% more than the previous record number of 37,704,510 recorded in 2011.

2012 Traffic Report

MAHB operated airports handled a record 67.2 million passenger movements in 2012, 5.0% above 2011. The growth could have been higher if not for the fact that there was significant reduction in capacity and termination of services by local carriers in late 2011 and early 2012. The international passenger traffic achieved 6.1% growth while the domestic sector registered a 3.9% increase. KLIA registered 5.8% passenger growth for 2012. The international and domestic traffic registered 6.4% and 4.4% growth respectively. In 2012 there were 66 airlines operating at KLIA to 120 destinations. Frequencies operated per week in December 2012 increased by 179 for international and 50 for domestic as compared with December 2011. The Main Terminal handled 20.6million passengers while the LCCT handled 19.3million passengers.

December recorded the highest ever passenger movements handled by MAHB group of airports with 6.6 million movements. Foreign airlines recorded the highest growth in 2012 by 10.1% followed by AirAsia Group’s 9.6% growth. AirAsia’s market share of the traffic increased to 47.1%, by another 2% from 2011. Malaysia Airlines(MAS) Group registered a 2.3% decline in passenger movements though on a standalone basis MAS posted a 2.7% growth. Firefly’s termination of jet services and cancellation of routes in late 2011 and early 2012 brought significant loss in passenger numbers for MAS group in 2012. Nevertheless, the last two months of 2012 has seen significant improvements in MAS group traffic whereby its traffic grew by an impressive double digit year-on-year 10.1%.

Cargo movements continued the downslide by another 1.4% in parallel with the world’s decline of 1.5% announced by the International Air Transport Association(IATA). Aircraft movements registered a 2.3% reflecting some capacity reductions.

IATA has estimated 2013 global passenger growth at 4.5% and cargo growth at 1.4%. The current economic uncertainties including that at Europe and USA, and lower growth in China are negative factors expected to lower down the growth.

MAHB expects passenger performance for 2013 to be better in view of increased vigour from both low cost and conventional airlines. AirAsia group, Malaysia Airlines and also foreign airlines have already and also are in the process of further increasing their capacity offerings. The new requests to operate additional frequencies and routes both at the international and domestic levels have been encouraging. One World partnership and A380 operations are expected to give additional lift for Malaysia Airlines. Entry of Malindo Air, Air France and another one or two established airlines will add to the market out reach. Ongoing promotional efforts for Visit Malaysia Year 2014 would provide further impetus to the air travel demand expansion.

Assuming a GDP in the range of 4.5%-5.5%, it is estimated that MAHB airports passengers would grow by 7.1% in 2013. This is assuming the global economic scenario does not turn to be worse and the oil prices remain in the current range 100USD -110USD. Good growth is expected in both low cost and conventional segments. Aircraft growth is expected to register a higher growth in view of higher capacity expected to be offered by airlines. Cargo is expected to remain at 2012 level as latest monthly trends has not indicated any positive development for cargo.

 

Based on MAHB's prediction growth of 7.1% for 2013, the target number for KLIA by the end of this year is 42,719,904 passengers.

I think that had the permanent LCCT opened according to the original schedule, there would have been no problem achieving 40m. Still that would make 2013 more exciting for us. With the many aircraft deliveries scheduled for MH, AK and D7 this year, pax volume contribution by the home carriers should escalate significantly.

AirAsia X flew 670,000 passengers in the fourth quarter of last year, up 40.5 per cent, over the same quarter in 2011 for continuing routes.

The airline said it discontinued services to Tehran and currently served 14 destinations across China, Taiwan, Australia, Korea, Japan, Nepal and Jeddah.

"The company has fully turned around with a strong second half performance in 2012 after the route network consolidation earlier in the year," it said in a statement.

On capacity, AirAsia X recorded 4.0 billion available-seat-kilometres with a load factor of 83 per cent, an increase of 1.1 per cent, from the same quarter in 2011.

 

"In 2012, AirAsia X carried a total of 2.58 million passengers which reflected a growth of 2.2 per cent compared with the same period in 2011," said Chief Executive Officer Azran Osman-Rani.

He said ancillary revenue rose to 18 per cent in 2012 compared with the previous year with key contributions from Japan and Australia.

The airline carried 7,555 tonnes of freight in the fourth quarter and 27,269 tonnes for the year, a 18 per cent growth from a year ago.

Azran said AirAsia X was positive with its financial outlook in 2013 with deliveries of seven new A330-300 aircrafts.

"These aircrafts will be deployed across its core markets in Asia Pacific by opening new routes and increasing flight frequencies on existing routes," he said. -- Bernama
