Airasia X Flying From Kota Kinabalu?

KOTA KINABALU, Nov 1 (Bernama) -- In future, Sabah may see AirAsia X, the long-haul franchise of AirAsia, commencing its service from the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA), according to an AirAsia top official.

AirAsia Bhd chairman Datuk Aziz Bakar has not denied this possibility but declined to elaborate on those destinations they were eyeing.

While not specifying the time period to achieve this, he said: "I am sure AirAsia X will look into it.

"But right now, the airline probably does not have sufficient aircrafts (to accomodate the flights)," he told reporters at the launch of the Kota Kinabalu-Singapore route at Terminal 2 of KKIA here Saturday.

Aziz was asked if the airline was interested in introducing long-haul services from KKIA, such as Australian destinations. AirAsia X's inaugural flight was on Nov 2, last year to Gold Coast, Australia.

The airline currently operates with just one A330-300, which undertakes four return flights a week between Kuala Lumpur and Gold Coast, as well as China's Guangzhou.

The long-haul budget airline is 48 per cent owned by Aero Ventures (a venture of AirAsia's chief executive Datuk Tony Fernandes and several of his business associates), followed by 16 per cent by Virgin Group and 16 per cent owned by AirAsia.

AirAsia X has also secured rights to land in China, Korea and West Asia and future destinations, include those in India, the Middle East and Europe.

AirAsia X is expected to launch its second Australian destination which is Perth Airport tomorrow, with six flights a week between the two cities, and services to Melbourne expected from Nov 12.

It is also expected to fly to Britain in the first quarter of 2009.

KK-Taiwan would be AirAsia and not D7? I mean a 320 could (very) comfortably fly to any point in taiwan and actually has the legs to do Soul or North China and even Nagoya/Osaka! Come to think about it... BKI seems like the perfect place for an AK scissors hub, to consolidate SEA pax heading for North Asia... So it'd be like KUL/SIN/CGK/BKK/KCH-BKI and BKI-ICN/Busan/Jeju/TPE/FUK/NGO/PEK A daily 320 to these places with holidayer from so many SEA countries would be really easy to fill... Especially when a 330 from KUL might be overkill

KK-Taiwan?

Too close to consider this longhaul, and they can do this with 320's...

How about South-Korean- and/or Japanese destinations ?

KOTA KINABALU: AirAsia will introduce a new flight service from Kota Kinabalu to Cebu, Philippines at the end of this year through its international operation brand, AirAsia X.

Chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes in announcing this here yesterday, said the airline was also planning to start connecting Kota Kinabalu to several other destinations in Australia, Korea and Japan.

“We have seen tremendous growth of 20 per cent in Sabah, which is actually the highest anywhere. Our next stage is to put AirAsia X into Sabah and start operating flights to Sydney and Perth as well as Korea and Japan,” he said, adding the Cebu flight would commence in December.

Fernandes, who said this when delivering a talk in conjunction with Sabah International Expo 2012, however did not disclose the frequency of the new flights.

There must be some mistake. CEB is less than 2 hours from BKI, believe it will be AK operating.

Well he was in BKI yesterday, so maybe the announcement was brought forward.

I would be very interested to see what kind of operations D7 can mount out of BKI.

Australia Airlines didn't make SYD-BKI work, it will be interesting to see if they could.

Hope this is not some attempt to steal MH's lime light and ended at empty talks.

Australia Airlines didn't make SYD-BKI work, .....

No, that wasn't the story we were fed when they packed up and left :)

Apparently it was because they need the equipment for their newly acquired Japan route

Why they chose to prioritize Japan over Sabah - it's their call ;)

Made no great difference though, they still went belly up soon after

Australian Airlines also used to fly between BKI/SIN prior to the suspension with full 5th freedom rights if I'm not mistaken.

are they gonna do anything about the non availability of ILS in BKI. It's been too long now.

Guess the latest aircraft don't really need ILS after all.

Perhaps they intend to have BKI as the nation's 'Survivor' course for you pilots to demonstrate and prove your basic/primal flying skills before endorsing your licence for next term of service ? :p
