Skytrax reviewing MH 5 star rating

Recommended Posts

Don't read too much into it. It probably just means that Skytrax is still tabulating the scores for MH. Downgrading MH is as much a slap for Skytrax as it is for MH... I can assure you that MH will retain its glorious ratings with Skytrax.

Not surprised. At this moment in time, they don't deserve 5 Stars.

Ironically, I think it will do wonders to MH if Skytrax removes it from the top echelon. A reality check may see MH striving to actually improve on the products and services side, and drop the silly 5-star mantra.

Agree with Alan B. , MAS product and services are lousier then last time when they were 4 star...

the service, the product really don't deserve 5 star, hopefully they get downgraded to what they are now...

I was once very proud with MH...but now very disappointing about the service they provided... :( :(

Sometimes I'm horrified when I saw comments posted by MAS employees on facebook.. For some of their staff, it seems the only thing that matters to them is their bonus or something to their personal gain.

Wow.. their airline is making huge losses at operating level, yet they only have their self-interest in mind. With those kind of employees in MAS, so pampered, it will be hard for the airline to propel itself forward.

If MH drops the 'Skytrax 5-star airline' tag from its publicity and marketing, it will soon not matter whether it has such a rating in the first place. MH and QR seem to be only two airlines trumpeting this tag.

What to advertise if such a rating is gone? Simply go back to giving customers what they want : pure good service. And then advertise the hell out of it - just like the good old days.

MH has far more important issues to address : widebody fleet replacement (or if not, at least update the product across the existing fleet), join an alliance that wants it, return to operational profitability (because you cannot continue to rely on gains from fuel hedging to report profits) and perhaps when the house is in order, come up with a new image (and for heaven sake, use Malaysian home-grown talents for this and not some big name a-la-Landor Associates type of outfit).

So in essence, I say "Dump Skytrax before they even have the chance to dump you".

Agree with KC. MH needs to focus more on its products and customers than merely satisfying Skytrax reviews. Ultimately, it should leave Skytrax behind and be a 5-star airline even without the Skytrax tag! It won't be a quick win, but MH needs to work on it urgently, and very seriously.

I am one of the many great supporters of MH who believes in quality of service and sincerity of the crew while onboard. I have always felt that majority of the ground crew could do with more training and some language proficiency and most importantly be sincere when dealing with any passengers. To add on, I think the ground crew could also do with some attitude change and being more available and friendly. I have recently noticed and experienced that the ground crew tend to be doing their job more than going beyond expectations thus I feel there is no passion in the job they are doing. Maybe there is a lack of motivation in their working environment ? I can't be too sure....but MH please take note. On their cabin crew, I must say I mostly feel comfortable with their whole service and I feel a sense of sincerity and friendiness by the crew, but there are always rotten apples everywhere. I must say though that their "high tech-ness" seems to be way behind most airlines these days. I recently flew QR to LHR and they were either on par with MH or better. So please MH, give us competitive rates, have modern and high tech facilities on board, get new planes and keep up with the big players and set them as your benchmark instead of AK and such, train and motivate your staff both ground and cabin and you will see a pool of many many loyal customers for MH for a very long time.

Skytrax or not, MH has some quality that even SQ or EK does not have.

so way to go MH !!

Would like to know on which points QR was better/worse than MH...

My dad flew QR (MAD-DOH-KUL). He said the service is more or less similar with MH although the aircraft is far superior. (talking about 77W for DOH-KUL route).

sorry mr,it is not self-interest in mind or in other words, selfish ,of getting bonus etc,its how mas treat their staff over the years.it is'human thing' to be unsatisfied.people work for money and the reason why this people are unhappy is just because they are not getting what they deserved for.true enough,if u get rm500 for year-end bonus/reward,u will be happy rather than nothing.losses is another issue but to make your staff happy is another issue.no motivation=unhappiness

Wonder how many pax choose to fly with MH solely because of ‘5 Star’ tagline? Wonder what is their expectation of 5 star airline?

I am among some great supporters of MH. If Skytrax downgrades MH's rating, I don't think there is any problem yet MH's quality & service now doesn't really reflects the quality as a 5 star airline should achieve.

For the sake of upgrading the entire branding and services, I believe that MH is working as hard as they can as they had their latest sky interior B738 & all new A333 with all new C class and Y class seats continuously joining its fleet.

As for what I've observed from MH at this moment, they have:

- Received it's new B738 and A333, first in the world to introduce sky interior on all B738 flights

- Soon to be the first A380 super jumbo jet

- New seats in small/widebody/ultra widebody aircraft(the A380)

- Premium Economy introduced in A380 (TBC)

- Be it trendy or out of class, the fuel saving NEW livery

- The have added "non stop MH, MH for Malaysian Hospitality" instead of just "MH for Malaysian Hospitality" I suppose?

- New In-Flight Entertainment with USB port

- New staff uniform unveiled in the latest edition of GoingPlaces (Be it nice or not, still a new image I called)

- New Premium Check In Lounge

Did I missed out anything? I think no matter MH can still maintain its rating in skytrax or not, they have already done their best and I appreciated for all the efforts they gave. GO MH :)

There are a few problems with your observation here my friend:

- Received it's new B738 and A333, first in the world to introduce sky interior on all B738 flights

They weren't; FlyDubai was the first one to receive 737s with Sky Interior, MH was the second. (Although they were the first full-service airlines to receive one)

- New seats in small/widebody/ultra widebody aircraft(the A380)

- Premium Economy introduced in A380 (TBC)

Though MH's new 333s' seats are way better than the elder siblings in terms of entertainment options, they are far from revolutionary. Plus the Y seats now have 32 inches instead of 34 inches on their older 333s. (Not sure if the difference is much given the slimmer new seats, perhaps anyone here can comment?) I'll hold my comments regarding the 380's premium eco seats until we see them.

- Be it trendy or out of class, the fuel saving NEW livery

Livery is a form of advertising. While MH could use some new livery, they could've done better. To this day I still believe the decision to repaint Hibiscus and Heliconia is a bad move in terms of gaining bigger publicity. It does save fuel but it also loses out another avenue on gaining bigger publicity, which MH sorely lacks.

- The have added "non stop MH, MH for Malaysian Hospitality" instead of just "MH for Malaysian Hospitality" I suppose?

I still way prefer the "Going Beyond Expectations" slogan and its associated theme. Admittedly it's just a matter of personal taste. Slogans are nothing if the service level does not meet what one expects. Everything will be moot if your experience is beyond your expectations in the wrong way, or if if turns out to be Malaysian Hostility...

As for the other points, they do help MH maintain the service level the passenger expect more or less, but the main issue is the older aircraft's seats and IFE options and they should invest in new ones, perhaps something more revolutionary this time, if they intend to keep them for a while longer. Also if you have flipped through international publications such as Time, Newsweek, National Geographic, RD etc. you will notice TG and SQ tend to put their advertisement there. Lack of brand awareness among premium passengers will remain a major hindrance to MH, no matter what hardware they put in their aircraft.

Actually I was not really bothered with MH tagline or rating previously as there were no competition until AK came into the fray.

totally agree with you on this.. the major obvious problem is that they are trying to excel as a local player or "jaguh kampung" rather than world-class player and compete with the likes of SQ & TG....anyway they failed in both........

@Y.J.Foo

yeah I prefer Going Beyond Expectations too, and agree that it was truly a bad move to repaint the hibiscus and heliconia...

MH new seats are only making them "new" but lack of innovation... I am so impressed to Air NZ's new premium and economy class seats... And for the first time when I saw MH's new J&Y class seats, I was like awwwhhh come on MH you can do better... :(

The change of uniform does impressed me, really, although not big difference compared to the current one (spotting the female design), but the light turqouise touch still look fresh to me! And as for the steward's uniform... It looks miles better than the bow tie casino boy uniform... cant wait to see them wearing out in short time, though just waiting for orders to put on their garment, officially... :)

I know MH is not the first airliner to receive the sky int. B738s, as what you've corrected me, MH is the first full service flagship carrier that offers sky int. in all B738s...

All of us here are hoping for a good future for MH... :) I hope they will be "sangsang sengseng" lah... lol :)

PS: I REALLY REALLY HOPE MH WILL CONSIDER OF PICKING UP ORDERS FOR B773s... >.<

Having flown CX recently, I can say that MH has much better crew. CX put their best crew at the front, leaving younger ones at the back and some of them came across as arrogant and snobby.

Meal portions and lack of footrest, both are equal.

But CX excels miles ahead in cabin interior, IFE, menu card and towelette (with the last two, MH doesn't have them anymore).
