Boeing 787 Dreamliner

Recommended Posts

Just wonder, if an airline make an order for the B787 today, what is the earliest time the planes will be delivered?

Nah, I was asking Radzi. Maybe he knows something about MH's WB orders.

Unfortunately, no. Not even rumors. All I know is MH is NOT ordering any WB for now.

Qatar Air Says Boeing 787 Delay Affects Expansion

January 11, 2009

State-owned Qatar Airways is in talks to revise delivery of Boeing's 787 Dreamliner jet and is seeking compensation after the manufacturer's latest delay affected the airline's expansion.

Ali al-Rais, the airline's executive vice-president, commercial, said no new delivery deadline has been set yet.

"They already know they have been at fault," he told reporters in Dubai. "They know that the standard clause will kick in."

Qatar Airways, which has a fleet of more than 60 planes and has been expanding rapidly, has about 200 planes on order including 30 787s.

Boeing pushed back the schedule for its troubled 787 Dreamliner for the fourth time last December, making its new plane almost two years late. Qatar had originally expected a 12-month delay.

"We have not banked totally on the 787 and do have an agreement with Airbus... We will not be hassling our supplier, there is compensation and we are discussing the schedule."

Rais declined to say how much the airline would receive in compensation.

More than 50 airlines are waiting for 892 Boeing 787s, worth a combined USD$145 billion at list prices. The 787 has been held up as the US plane maker makes slow progress on assembling planes and struggles with other delays.

On Sunday, Rais told reporters the carrier expected to receive its A380 orders by 2011 to coincide with the opening of a new airport. The airline has ordered five of the world's largest passenger plane from Airbus.

Qatar Airways, which begins flights to Houston on March 30 to tap into the US energy hub's close links with the world's largest exporter of liquefied natural gas, expects to receive at least 12 Boeing 777s in 2009, Rais said.

Rais said it had become a "tougher market" for financing, but the airline had sovereign guarantees and a consortium of banks that were supporting it.

In December, the carrier, which is looking to expand to at least 120 destinations from 83 at present within five years, raised USD$500 million to purchase three Boeing 777s.

The airline is looking at passenger growth of 35 percent this year despite the global financial crisis as it looks to focus its expansion into Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

"There has been a drop in Europe, but we still have the rest of the world... we are able to redesign our strategy," Rais said.

Rais said the airline has not bid for Greece's loss-making state-owned Olympic Airlines and was not looking to expand through acquisitions.

"We have never been interested in taking any other airline or any other ventures," he said. "We never bid for it... our focus is Qatar Airways."

Greece said last year Qatar Airways was among companies that had expressed an interest in buying Olympic.

'Frenetic' Boeing moving ahead with 787 with temporary fasteners

Wednesday January 28, 2009

Boeing has elected not to replace all the temporary fasteners on the first six 787 test aircraft because they are not in critical load areas.

The manufacturer confirmed a Leeham Co. report stating that "the small number of fasteners that won't be replaced are not easy to reach and don't represent a safety of flight issue. They have the ability to withstand the loads and number of cycles expected during the flight test program. They must be repaired before long-term operations begin so they will be replaced during the refurbishment program after flight test." There are no details available on the percentage of fasteners involved, but Boeing said the number declines from aircraft one through aircraft six.

Fasteners have been one of the more significant issues that have delayed the 787. The most recent delay, confirmed in November, centered on incorrect installation of the fasteners that had replaced some initial temporary fasteners used because of a global shortage. At the time, Boeing said fewer than 3% of fasteners were nonconforming.

Work has reached a "frenetic pace" on the first test aircraft (ZA001), according to a source on the production floor, and re-power-on of the first flight test aircraft, now moved to the 767 production hall, is expected later this week. At the same time, final assembly is due to start on flight test aircraft ZA005, while the wings for ZA006 arrived last week.

Russia's S7 Cancels Boeing 787 Order

January 29, 2009

Russia's S7 has become the first airline to cancel a major contract for Boeing's 787 Dreamliner, as the country's airlines face their worst-ever financial crisis.

The order for 15 787s, due to be delivered in 2014, was worth about USD$2.4 billion at list prices. The cancellation is a blow for Boeing, whose new, lightweight jet has not yet left the ground and is about two years behind schedule.

S7, the main domestic rival to Russia's flag carrier Aeroflot, will seek to lease the planes instead, the company said on Thursday.

"S7 retains interest in using the Dreamliner and at the moment is looking into receiving the planes under a leasing scheme at an earlier date, for which it is in negotiations with several leasing companies," it said, without naming the leasing companies.

Russia's airlines were hit hard by high oil prices and global economic turmoil, which left about a dozen of them unable to fly last year.

The resulting crisis prompted Russia's government to create a new state giant, Russian Airlines, to absorb crippled carriers.

Boeing, which has faced a series of production problems on the 787 and a two-month strike last year by its assembly workers, is expecting more cancellations from airlines this year as the demand for flights wanes.

The plane maker warned on Wednesday that an airline had canceled a 787 order, but did not say which.

Boeing Eyes Delivery Of 787 Dreamliner In Q1 2010

KUALA LUMPUR, April 30 (Bernama) -- Boeing has targeted the delivery of its 787 Dreamliner in the first quarter of 2010, said the vice president and chief project engineer, 787 programme, Mike Delaney.

He said roughly 4,000 deliverables are required to type certify the aircraft and at this point, 60 percent of it had already been submitted to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Civil aircraft require four separate FAA inspection and certification processes to be operated -- the type certificate, production certificate, airworthiness certificate and airline operating certificate.

"We have been working well with the FAA to submit these. The FAA on its part, has been working diligently to provide the approval and feedback as part of the process," he said during a briefing on the 787 Certification and Flight test via teleconferencing, today.

According to Delaney, the planning and process of the test programme has been undertaken in such a way that it enables the Boeing 787 team to "fly" the aircraft into the second quarter of this year and deliver to the launch customers in the first quarter of 2010," he said.

The test programme will also be concluded in the first quarter of 2010.

There are a total of 886 orders for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner from 57 customers.

When ZA001 was handed over to the flight test team two weeks ago prior to factory gauntlet testing, Boeing changed its internal classification of the first 787 from 'production status' to 'flight status.'

ZA001 Dreamliner is rolled out of the paint hangar and to the fuel dock for series of tests. Video on Flight Blogger's site, damn sexy wing i must say...

sorry if my questions is silly. i think a few years ago boeing ask MH to be their partner and a launch customer for the new aircraft that they want to build (B7E7). boeing even said in the local newspaper they proud MH become the partner but NH is their launch customer now. what is/are the circumstances that MH didn't become the launch customer? your answer is very much appreciated.

You'll have to pay for prime Boeing 787 view

The Future of Flight Aviation Center will let you watch the Dreamliner's first fight from its deck -- if you donate $250 or more to the museum.

By Michelle Dunlop

Herald Writer

MUKILTEO -- Have you staked out your spot to watch the Boeing Co. fly its 787 Dreamliner for the first time?

Aviation buffs who plan to catch the 787's first flight from the deck of the Future of Flight Aviation Center and Boeing Tour might want to plan ahead. The deck won't be open to the public as part of regular admission to the center, positioned across Paine Field where the Dreamliner will take off.

Boeing plans to fly the 787 by the end of June. However, the company hasn't given a specific date for the flight. The results of ground tests that are under way on the aircraft will affect the scheduling of the first flight. Weather will also play a role in setting a date.

Despite limited notice for the Dreamliner's maiden flight, the event likely could draw thousands of onlookers to the Paine Field area as both Boeing workers and aviation geeks hope to glimpse the Dreamliner take flight.

The Future of Flight will limit access to its observation deck to people who have donated to the aviation center's foundation. To reserve a spot on the deck, would-be 787 spotters will need to have donated $250 or more to the Future of Flight Foundation before the first flight takes place. A donation of $250 or more gets a person a spot on the deck and a VIP parking pass for the event.

Corporate donors can bring multiple attendees by contributing to the Future of Flight foundation's "Partners in Innovation" program. A business that donates $2,500 before the first flight can reserve admission for 10 employees. A $5,000 donation gets 20 slots; $10,000 buys you 40 reserved spots and parking passes.

Boeing is nearly two years behind schedule in putting its 787 Dreamliner in the air. In July 2007, the company rolled out its mostly composite Dreamliner in Everett. Journalists from around the world flew in for the Hollywood-style event, which was hosted by former NBC "Nightly News" anchor Tom Brokaw.

The 787's first flight plans are being closely watched by media and investors alike. The Dreamliner has won more than 800 orders. Boeing expects to deliver the first 787 early next year.

To reserve a spot on the Future of Flight's deck, contact the aviation center at 425-438-8100, ext. 226.

Read the Aerospace blog at Heraldnet.com/blogs to vote on your dream spot to watch the 787's first flight.
