It's a STOL airfield,but recently a MASwings ATR 72-500 landed on that Island.And it even on TV3 News (Can't remember when) From wikitravel: Travel back to Kota Kinabalu by boat is a very long option (16 hours) and not readily available to the scuba diving traveller. So,it's a loooong trip;It only takes one hour to fly from BKI to Layang-Layang Island. Waiping 12 Report post Posted March 16, 2010 Sorry a bit OT. I thought Layang-Layang serves more like a research/naval base and the authority constantly monitor the number of visitors there. kianhong 0 Report post Posted March 16, 2010 OT Layang-layang island was originally an atoll, part of the Spratly islands claimed by China, Vietnam, Phillipnes etc etc. There was no landmass before M'sia gov practically built an aircraft-carrier like island to claim a stake of the atoll. It is located approx 300km north of KK. The only regular connection is by aircraft. (Shorts skyvan used to ply this route). Located on the island also is a world famous diving resort run by some well connected peoples. Also a important breeding ground for migratory birds.
