Layang-Layang Airfield? It's a STOL airfield, but recently a MASwings ATR 72-500 landed on that Island. And it even on TV3 News (Can't remember when)

From wikitravel:

Travel back to Kota Kinabalu by boat is a very long option (16 hours) and not readily available to the scuba diving traveller.

So,it's a loooong trip;It only takes one hour to fly from BKI to Layang-Layang Island.

Sorry a bit OT.

I thought Layang-Layang serves more like a research/naval base and the authority constantly monitor the number of visitors there. So plane tickets to Layang-Layang should be quite hard to get.

OT

Layang-layang island was originally an atoll, part of the Spratly islands claimed by China, Vietnam, Phillipnes etc etc. There was no landmass before M'sia gov practically built an aircraft-carrier like island to claim a stake of the atoll.

It is located approx 300km north of KK. The only regular connection is by aircraft. (Shorts skyvan used to ply this route). Located on the island also is a world famous diving resort run by some well connected peoples. Also a important breeding ground for migratory birds. Divers/tourists usually buy a package from the resort that cost around RM2000 for 5D4N.

That's TF-ARN bro...

This one is TF-AAB (former 9M-MHI), previously passenger plane now converted to B742 freighter. That's why you can still see the windows on its fuselage.

Tonight (tomorrow morning) will be Shenzhen Airline's last flight to BKI.

Meaning, they will suspend operations to BKI.
