Kuching International Airport Set For B747 And A380 Landing

KUCHING, June 17 (Bernama) - A Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Boeing 747 aircraft with a full load of passengers made a historic landing at the Kuching International Airport (KIA) here Wednesday.

The jumbo jet from Kuala Lumpur, piloted by MAS Senior General Manager of Flight Operations Division, Datuk Captain Ahamd Zuraidi Dahalan, touched down at 5.05pm on the newly completed extended runway of KIA.

The extended runway, from 2,454m previously to 3,780m now, has also made it the longest in Borneo and the fourth in South East Asia after the KL International Airport, Singapore's Changi Airport and Bangkok's airport.

It can now take the Airbus 380.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who toured the runway earlier, declared open the extended runway.

Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) Director General Datuk Azharuddin A.Rahman handed over the certificate of Operational Readiness of Runway Extension to Najib.

Also present was Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

With a pavement width of 60m, the runway is to cater for the Boeing 747 aircraft having a frequency of 1,200 annual departures.

The runway fully complies with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) requirements, include visuals aids such as glide path, localizer, Precision Approach Light (PAL), runway and taxiway lighting and signs.

The extension of the runway is the final stage of the redevelopment of KIA valued at nearly RM800 million. The terminal building's upgrading and extension was completed earlier.

Global Upline Sdn Bhd was the turnkey contractor and it took four years to complete.

In his message in the souvenir book, Taib said the completion of the extended runway was of great significance to the economic development of Sarawak particularly since it would be able to handle the unhindered operations of Boeing 747 or even the Airbus 380.

He said the bigger cargo load would provide greater efficiency for the operations of industries around Kuching.

"The project is yet another contribution and a continuing show of support of the federal government to the economic growth of the peoples and the state of Sarawak," he said.

Haih,i'm wonder, does the extension of the runway is really neccesary? Wonder if the A380 come to KCH,even the 744 fly to KCH only during Hajj season.

Is it really the longest in Borneo? What about BWN's?

The whole article sounds like a propaganda article for some political party's newsletter.

Not sure if this is the case in KCH as well but in KK not so easy. Either you have to pay a lot for reclamation work, or you need to move plenty of squatters so credit where credit is due, it makes a lot of people rich.

Yes, we love building white elephants for political reasons. Does anyone know how many B747s fly to the Kuala Terengganu airport? Kuching should perhaps twin with them!

Here's the plane that flew the flight.

9M-MPP "Putrajaya" parked at A10 yesterday. Heard from the cabin crew the flight was pretty empty.

LSG Sky Chefs in KCH already ?!

I believe that the shots Andrew K has shared are the aircraft being readied at KLIA for it's flight to KCH, hence, the presence of LSG Skychefs.

Whilst the extenstion of runways seem politically motivated (and in likelihood, they are for the most part), a few longer runways around is good in the case of alternates and diversion airports :) MORE OPTIONS!

This looks like a code share flight with Etihad... But for an inaugural flight to be empty is not good!

No I wasn't on the flight. Had a lot of time before my flight departed so my crew took a quick trip to admire the jumbo. And yeah, weather in KL was so-so. But a lot better than it has been in the last couple of days.
