Aiyo aiyo they really like to spend tax payers money. What full of @#$% this airport. Already so empty extension some more.

That is why they had to create three arrival and three departure Halls - domestic (Sabah/Sarawak), domestic (penisular malaysia) and international...

I suppose MH as a last resort could have loaded on ballast in the form of water tanks or sand bags to make up for deficit in attaining "full load" - but then that would be irrelevant in context of big picture :)

 

Can the professionals verify - if runway length is more critical during landing or take off phase ?

OT, isn't BKI runway will extend to 3,8xx meters? so mean BKI runway also can cater A380 but not the Terminal itself. :yahoo:

someone here got a reporter friend, during the launching ceremony or the opening ceremony of the terminal 1 "phase 1?", she ask the there whether the terminal can handle or cater A380, and the answer is negative.

I would think that whether the terminal can take the A380 depends on -

 

1 Airbridges for pax (esp. upper deck)

2 Catering facilities

3 Parking space at the apron - A380 has a massive wingspan, so needs a lot of space!

4 Airport runway length and strength

5 Taxiways that can take the giant whalejet

1. the aerobridges isnt too much a problem...any airport with dual bridge could easily handle an A380.. the 3rd bridge is mainly for the smooth flow of the pax..esp for the upper deck..

 

2. not too sure about this though..

 

3. yes...thats why only C17/C27/C37 have been redesigned to cater the A380..

 

4. any airport runway designed for 747 can easily handle a full load A380..believe it or not...for flexible pavement (the asphalt runway)...the A340-500/600 gives more damage to the runway than the A380 ...

 

5. more concern on the taxiway width...

But when they first unveiled the plan for the new KKIA terminal, the press release said that the terminal will be capable of handling A380 ? And i believe it is Gate A2 ? No ?

dont want to be too technical. but the landing gear is very crucial when it comes to the pavement analysis...so..it turn out that heavy load of the A380 is evenly spread by the massive landing gear compared to the A340-500/600

but this only applicable for the flexible pavement...not the rigid pavement (concrete)

Takeoff phase - the need to stop if an engine fails just before V1. If the runway is shorter then the takeoff weight will have to be lowered so that the V1 will be lower too. Apart from the runway, obstacles around the takeoff path will have to be considered too.

 

There is a solution for a greater wingspan at the terminal: just make sure the adjacent bay is empty or have a short wingspan aircraft parked there. Obstacles next to the taxiway will have to be tackled separately.

 

Nice to have KCH able to accommodate the A380 - good for diversion or emergency. But for regular flights, traffic load will have to be justified, no matter what type of aircraft there is.

I got this same email, and it arrived in my mailbox 1 day before the flight... ! MAS must have expected receipients of such offer will be extremely thrilled to fly on the 747, drop everything, take sick leave, and book for the flight at once!

I always think it is MD-11 that is the most critical. I've been told KLIA runway is designed based on MD-11 loading, not sure how true it is...

Whoa.. by the writing (propaganda?? :blink: ) of the reporter, as if other 747-capable airports in Malaysia are incapable of handling A380 but KLIA and KCH <_>

This means that, PEN pun sudah boleh la, looooooooooong ago... [PEN is capable too].... and TGG, recently :p

Yes, A380 has more wheels to spread the weight around, so each wheel should exert less pressure on the runway. Its like lorries having more axles and wheels to carry heavy loads. The A380's body undercarriage is similar to those of military cargo planes with additional wing landing gear.

 

Taxiways should be wide enough and clean enough so that the outboard engines do not ingest debris from the non-paved parts.
