Radzi 2 Report post Posted May 4, 2009 Shall I be happy, or be scared? From here Pak Lah made MAS advisor as Najib avoids potential minefield By The Malaysian Insider KUALA LUMPUR, May 4 — The Najib administration has manoeuvered around a potentially delicate situation: making Tun Abdullah Badawi the advisor to Malaysia Airlines today and keeping Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as Petronas advisor. Tradition is for a recently retired prime minister to be given the prestigious advisor position in the national oil company. But the government did not want to stir a hornet’s nest. To avoid friction between the two former prime ministers and their supporters, Abdullah will also not use the Perdana Leadership Institute as his office but instead operate from another house in Putrajaya. The Perdana Leadership Institute was set up in 2003 and Dr Mahathir has been using it as his office since. The Malaysian Insider understands that at last week’s cabinet meeting, a discussion was conducted about the positions to be offered to Pak Lah. The cabinet of Datuk Seri Najib Razak had also decided that Abdullah would play an advisory role at the Malaysian Islamic Understanding Institute (IKIM) as well as serve as an advisor for the various growth corridors which were set up during his tenure as PM. The idea is for Abdullah, as a former chairman of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC), to strengthen the economic linkages between the Middle-east and Malaysia, especially in Islamic finance as well as oil and gas. In that capacity, Abdullah will be making his first trip this week to Saudi Arabia. Ties between Dr Mahathir and Abdullah had soured during the latter’s tenure as PM. Dr Mahathir had grown increasingly critical of Abdullah’s leadership and had even suggested his hand-picked successor was dismantling his legacy. Last year, Dr Mahathir blamed Abdullah for Barisan Nasional’s (BN) worst ever electoral performance. He also quit Umno and only rejoined recently when Najib took over as the new PM. Najib’s administration has been mindful of the sensitivities surrounding the two former leaders and is eager to be seen as inclusive in handling the two men and their supporters. Azri M. 0 Report post Posted May 4, 2009 Be that as it may, stranger things have transpired in this land of ............. well, opportunities I hope this will never happen. With the merger, there won't be a healthy competition like we have now. And you know what that means, we will be the loser end: the fare will climb up, the service will suck beyond imaginable etc.

KK Lee 5 Report post Posted May 4, 2009 As for the advisory role, believe his famous son-in-law will exert plenty of advises on his behalf. MH paying one price for 2 brains (or 1 ½ brains, ooops! ) could be a bargain after all

Cheng Long 0 Report post Posted May 5, 2009 as advisor, he can give advice but no one necessarily has to follow them, just like Dr M as advisor to petronas. so unless he gives some enlightening advice (which im very doubtful of, may fall asleep in meetings), i doubt it will make any difference to MAS. Azri M. 0 Report post Posted May 5, 2009 Perhaps the advisor may suggest to pilots that taking naps whilst handling those jets may be good to one's health. Haha, good one. Maybe he will suggest to have more frequent flights to Perth, as his second home is in Perth.
