KLIA2 - New Mega Low Cost Carriers Terminal

I think that by increasing the size of the KLIA2 so much more than originally anticipated, MAHB is taking on a bigger business and financial risk.

 

Much will depend on how the market will be when it opens. If its customers, the airlines and retail outlets, can expand as expected then we will say that MAHB did a brilliant job. If there is a recession, and air travel growth slows or contracts, KLIA2 may be a huge whte elephant as airlines cut back on capacity. Then we will say that MAHB was stupid to take on such big risks.

 

So lets see what happens...

65PC COMPLETE: New terminal is set to cater to 30 million passengers a year

 

THE highly talked about low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT), klia2, will commence operations on May 1 next year, says Malay-sia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) chief financial officer Faizal Mansor.

 

klia2, which is designed to cater to 30 million passengers a year with a provision to expand to 45 million passengers, is currently 65 per cent complete.

 

In terms of the new terminal's cost, which currently stands at RM4 billion, Faizal said there would not be any increase if there are no changes in the scope of work.

 

"We are working very hard in making sure that it remains below our budgeted cost of RM4 billion. As at this stage, as long as the scope remains as per the requirements, we don't see it going above RM4 billion," he said at a media briefing to announce MAHB's third-quarter financial results yesterday. Meanwhile, commenting on Air-Asia group chief executive Tan Sri Tony Fernandes' decision to move the budget carrier from the current LCCT to klia2, Faizal said it is good news and MAHB wants to be able to work very well with the budget carrier.

 

However, he said, there are still some outstanding issues between them, particularly on AirAsia's office and check-in counters, adding that MAHB will find ways to solve the issues as long as they do not compromise passengers' comfort and safety.

 

"We've got 100 requests to meet the requirements and 97, (or) 98 of those requirements have been met," he said.

 

On the formulation of a service-level agreement (SLA) between AirAsia and MAHB at klia2, Faizal said: "We have conditions of use but some airlines, in particular, domestic airlines AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines (MAS) have requested for a separate SLA. So we are working on finalising the SLA".

 

Apart from AirAsia, Faizal said, Tiger Airways, Mandala Air and Cebu Pacific, which currently operate from the current LCCT, may also move to klia2.

 

Other low-cost carriers operating from KLIA's main terminal have not, however, given confirmation if they would do the same.

 

Meanwhile, on MAHB's retail arm Eraman Malaysia selling its stake in Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), Faizal said the airport operator's position in the company has not changed at this stage.

 

He added that it is not uncommon for a company to explore opportunities to realise its investments when the time is right.

 

Eraman holds a 10 per cent stake in DIAL.

 

For the fourth quarter this year, MAHB expects to record stronger financial performance compared to the third quarter.

 

Faizal said the positive outlook is underpinned by expected stronger performances of MAS and AirAsia, as well as new airlines operating at its airports.

 

For the third quarter of this year, the airport operator posted revenue of RM754.2 million compared with RM661.1 million in the same period last year. However, its profit slipped to RM113.0 million from RM117.1 million a year ago.

 

MAHB posted revenue of RM2.2 billion for the nine months ended September 30, representing growth of 14.3 per cent compared with RM1.9 billion recorded in the corresponding period last year.

 

Its net profit rose 3.9 per cent to RM316.4 million compared with RM304.4 million previously.

 

For the period under review, the international and domestic passenger movements increased by 4.5 per cent and 3.1 per cent respectively.

Oh yes please. I can't stand of LCCT any longer... not only it's God Damn crowded but also very very hot inside the terminal building.

Some interesting observation.

 

"The 300-metre Skybridge at KLIA2 will connect the main and satellite terminals and has sufficient clearance for large aircraft, including the Airbus A380, to pass underneath."

 

 

"The Skybridge has 60 metres of walkalators and will facilitate travel between the two terminals within five minutes."

 

 

Considering that you need at least 30-35 metres of clearance from ground to allow for an A380 to pass underneath, the skybridge would be about 7-8 floors high (considering 10-12feet for a single storey).

I thought that was an obvious error as why bother catering for an A380...was this one of those Boeing A320 errors?

I believe skybridge at the city's twin towers much much higher than that - no issue so far

It's the span across that should be of concern to the engineers, plus the fact that the whole place is 'expected' to sink gradually over time due to soil condition, with no guarantee that both ends of the skybridge will settle at same rate :)

The skybridge is on piles, settlement should be minimal. However, apron is another story (unless it is piled as well). So it is possible the skybridge clerance is designed for A320 with 'expectation' for A380 in 10 years time ;)

Technically A380 can pass underneath it but the thing is the aprons are only for fit for Code C aircraft (A320 and the likes ) . You know these Malaysian press...always hoo haaa...

I think this is a case where the MAB can be congratulated on their far sightedness.

 

I am sure many of those who criticise them now will also criticise them later when LCCs like Skymark fly A380s into KLIA2 and can't cross the Skybridge because it is too low... Then we will all say that MAB is too shortsighted and not built the airport to cater for all sorts of aircraft!

 

This KLIA2 is a permanet LCCT, not like the present temporary one. So it should be built to stand the test of time. As such it should be compatible with all current and known future aircraft.

Is there any LCC potential to operate A380 in the future?

Bear in mind there is nothing said so far that excludes non-LCC's from operating at KLIA 2 (note it's not known as LCCT 2)

Theoretically, if facilities at the new place so 'wow' pax that say MH & EK think it worthwhile to switch 'home' ?

AirAsia X says KLIA2 switch will make it stronger

 

 

The move will allow the airline to offer more flight transfer, or 'Fly-Thru', services to more destinations, says its CEO

 

 

SEPANG: AirAsia X, the long-haul low-fare airline affiliate of AirAsia Bhd, believes that moving to KLIA2, the country's new low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT), will provide it with a tremendous opportunity to grow bigger and stronger.

 

The move will allow the airline to offer more flight transfer, or "Fly-Thru", services to more destinations, said its chief executive officer Azran Osman Rani at AirAsia X's fifth anniversary celebration, here, on Friday.

 

Currently, the service enables passengers to connect AirAsia Malaysia and AirAsia X flights at the LCCT using only a single booking itinerary and travelling on a single ticket.

 

Azran said last year, about 45 per cent of AirAsia X's passengers used the Fly-Thru services. Of those, 36 per cent were connected from AirAsia to AirAsia X flights and the balance from AirAsia X to AirAsia X flights.

The service is available for all AirAsia X flights departing from China, Taiwan, Australia, South Korea and Japan when connecting via LCCT to four domestic Malaysian destinations, namely Penang, Langkawi, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching.

 

"This is something that we have pioneered. Before us, no other low-cost carriers tried to do this," he said.

 

Azran believed that AirAsia X's cost structure in terms of airport fees will remain the same following its move to KLIA2. The new terminal is expected to be ready by end of April next year and start operating in May.

 

"Certainly, the contractual agreement is until 2014. There isn't a revision as I understand it. After that, maybe it'll be a sort of cost inflation-type adjustment," he said.

 

Meanwhile, AirAsia X is not shaken by the entrance of new rival Malindo Airways, which is Malaysia's second low-cost airline.

 

Azran said besides having the first-mover advantage, AirAsia has a powerful short-haul feeder network and a long-haul arm network.

 

"Any other airline that does not have the depth and long-haul model as well as international hubs must surely find it extremely difficult to even catch up. One thing that is very clear in the low-cost industry all over the world is that first-mover counts," he said.

ERL extension on track to KLIA2

 

SEPANG: Work to extend the Express Rail Link (ERL) to the new Low-Cost Carrier Terminal (KLIA2) is on target and is expected to be completed by the end of March, said ERL Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Noormah Mohd Noor.

 

She said as at October, work to extend the line and services from the KL International Airport (KLIA) to KLIA2 was 73% complete.

 

The project, which began in July last year, involves a 2.14km line extension.

 

Commercial services are expected to commence on May 1 to coincide with the opening of the new terminal.

 

“The work is on track and everything is progressing well. The track is 95% complete,” she said at a press conference after a site visit to KLIA2 yesterday by Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar.

 

Also present were Malaysia Airports Bhd senior general manager Datuk Azmi Murad and ERL Maintenance Support Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Thomas Baake.

 

Passengers travelling from KL Sentral to KLIA via ERL's high-speed train (KLIA Ekspres) and its commuter service (KLIA Transit) would not incur additional cost if they chose to extend their route to KLIA2.

 

“However, those shuttling between terminals would have to pay RM2,” Noormah said.

 

Works, she added, were also underway to create a common platform at both terminals for KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit passengers for better convenience.

 

“The journey from KL Sentral to KLIA2 will take 33 minutes via the express train and 39 minutes with the commuter service.

 

“The new line extension is expected to increase our ridership by 40%,” she said, adding that their total passenger load for this year was about 5.3 million.

 

The ERL station at KLIA2 will be located within the terminal's integrated complex and includes, among others, a 230m-long platform, escalators, boarding and exit gates and a concourse area with ticketing and operational offices.

Can someone enlighten me on how the RM 2 fares is going to be collected and the flow of passengers who will be travelling from MTB to KLIA2? Unless they build a barricaded ticket machines to enter the MTB platforms, I do not see how this could be done. The elevator at the MTB terminal is so close to the train that separating it with a wall might be undo able.

 

I am in the opinion that ERL should just allow free transfer between the MTB and KLIA2, just like how the trains in Heathrow (Connect and Express) are connected with the platforms of T1, T2, T3, the lone T4 and the furthest T5.

Wow!! That is a whole lot of retail therapy for the passengers! Although I must add, that I hope the food outlets would be of higher standards in terms of cleanliness as opposed to what is on offer now at the LCCT; especially the Food Garden, which is full of flies and the sinks to wash your hands are just not meant to wash anything (thanks to the small gap between the tap and the sink itself-kudos to the contractor). Also, if you visit the toilet at the Food Garden, you would know what I mean! On top of that, the food outlets at the Food Garden at LCCT is just *@#$%&&*!!!! Choices are limited to just two types of food choices and the flies are happily seated on the food on display, almost all the time. Oh well!!
