  1. Nice indeed. Looking forward to fly on it one of these days.
  2. That aircraft looks totaled! Thanks Rayner. Pieter, click these links for the details: http://www.mmail.com.my/Dutchman_found_dea...el_bathtub.aspx http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=...&sec=nation http://www.asiaone.com/News/AsiaOne%2BNews...0916-88038.html
  3. Nice shots Pieter! Have always been intrigued of Soviet planes and have only flown the IL-62M once. Loved the loud noise
  4. Lovely pics Norman. I have to dig my archives, so perhaps I'll add later. 9M-MCR was the actual aircraft that brought the remains of the late PM, Tun Razak, from London. I was there, and the crowd was very HUGE.
  5. If I recall correctly, the non-optional insurance started after the 9/11 attacks, as an insurance against terrorism-related risks in air travel. I think it started at about RM5 for domestic travel. But it seems to have increased these past few years. Well, that was my understanding over the insurance issue and did not investigate further. I may be wrong though. I hope anyone with info on this insurance issue can share with us the details as it is a bit of a 'mystery' to many of us outside the airline industry. Oh yeah....AIG is in the news. Tough times indeed.
  6. Based on the conditions of carriage, it appears to be a compulsory payment. I believe AK also imposes this kind of insurance, but lumped together with their administration fee (of RM22.50 for example, for intra peninsular travel). I recall a response by AK to a customer's complaint in the papers, that revealed what the administration fee is all about.
  7. I suppose the Bank Rakyat livery was dictated by the bank, as the advertiser. On its own, Air Asia has done several liveries which were beautiful and eyecatching i.e. 'Amazing' and 'Visit Malaysia Year'. Previously there were also the 'Lat' livery, 'Jalur Gemilang' etc.
  8. Great set of pictures there Norman. I have some similar family shots too, but too malu to post here Was sending parents who boarded an MSA 737-100 to Paya Lebar, Singapura. I guess Subang was where some of us here got an interest in aviation. The view from the circular deck those days were awesome........piercing engine sounds of DC8s, 707s and Jet-A1 fumes!
  9. That was nasty! Thanks for the first picture of the accident MIR.
  10. I think without waiting from any regulations to come up, all (local) airlines should take the initiative to advertise all-in prices on their own. The gahmen didn't ask airlines to advertise air fares minus add on fees in the first place.
  11. Excellent coverage with great pictures that tell the story. I must agree, in person Idris Jala is nice guy who would flash a smile to people around him. Met him on 2 occasions i.e. Firefly's inaugural flight and CIMB-MAS Platinum credit card launching ceremony. From my experience, people at the very top of an organization are usually nice people. Only those lower managers... some of them are a bit stuck up.
  12. I believe they were, as one would walk from the departure lounge down either a straight ramp or a spiral ramp and straight to the apron to where the aircrafts were parked. I'm refering to the 1970s...., but when the aerobridges were installed including the renovations, this part disappeared (demolished?!). Back then, arrival halls were (IIRC) Balai Tiba Utara and Balai Tiba Selatan....Selatan was for international arrival if I'm not mistaken, each with a circular baggage carousel. Then there was Bunga Raya lounge for VIP. In the third picture above, one could see a cluster of 'globes' suspended from the ceiling. These were bronze-coloured world time clocks with the middle globe advertising 'Rothman's' cigarettes!! Speaking of cigarettes, the restaurant there sold them at above market prices back then. Maybe air travellers then were rich and wouldn't mind paying extra. At each end of the terminal building there were two staircases which led straight to the observation deck which had a semi-circular part complete with pay-per-use binoculars. The stairs are visible from Syed's first photo. Underneath this semi circular part is the spiral ramp. The second picture showing hockey banner was taken in 1975.... I remember that time so vividly as I had a commemorative t-shirt of the event (other memorable sporting events during that time was Mohammed Ali vs Joe Bugner, where ringside tickets were sold for a princely sum of MY$1,000). The picture was most likely taken from the semi-circular part of the observation deck. One could absorb the smell and sound of planes from here, which was the most enjoyable part of plane spotting those days. Oh yes, those black rubber flooring with raised polka dots (!). From period advertisments, they were made by Dunlop. For anti-slip properties I guess, which I think was a good idea. I was told by an MAHB senior that the demolishment of T1 was done by a mat salleh company. Unfortunately nothing was left to remember this iconic building. Even the totem poles given by the people of Seattle as a gift of friendship to Malaysia and MAS for purchasing B737-200s are no where to be seen already. Or does anyone knows where they are now?
  13. Subang will always be fondly remembered..... if only Terminal 1 is still there, and the iconic control tower still stands. The best period of its existence was in the 1970s, as in the pictures above. By the 1980s when the observation deck was closed off, it became a dull place to watch planes. Louis, the P. Ramlee movie you mentioned is 'Sesudah Suboh', which also shows a Malaysian Airways Comet.
  14. Nice pics Captain. At least the colour cooordination on this airplane looks much better and pleasant to the eyes. The seat belt buckles look embossed with the logo too, just like FY do with its fleet. I recall this was also done on the older planes like the B737-200s of the past.
  15. Managed to stay away from a certain expensive airline with lousy inflight products since the end of last year, and saved money along the way. Looks like I'll never be back flying with them.
  16. Congrats to Air Asia and Singapore Airlines!
  17. I wonder too...... Now if a dog can sneak in (assuming from a hole in the fencing), then a person can as well!! OT, but personally encountered a dog that was crossing the PLUS highway, just after the notorious toll gate near Ipoh. I was on my way back from Penang to KL. Luckily I managed to brake in time to avoid hitting it. It was a very hard brake with tyres screeching! I wouldn't want to run over any animals on any road.
  18. If the students are MAS Grads members, they can get the 50% discount even if the group fare is now no more available. But bear in mind the add-on fees for KUL-BKI return is RM408 last time I checked. That is already a lot of money, especially for students. Oh BTW I see that you also collect MAS timetables. Too bad printed ones are gone now.

  20. This must be the shortest sector. Maybe AK should fly to Ipoh too, and perhaps PEN-LGK.
  21. Wonder how the airports could be 'forced' to close. If such were to happen in Malaysia, I believe the police, or even the army, would take control as it is a matter of 'national security'.
  22. Nice machines KC Sim....especially without the crowd and beautiful weather. Hmm... the 'number of the beast'! Reminds me of Damien Thorn Chilling to watch even today!
  23. Thanks Louis. I never expected to catch it as its entry into service was only the following day. Heard from folks there that it will be used for some KBR and PEN sectors, so it will be a regular at WMKC from now on. D60 tinggal rumah...... too bulky Decided to bring just my cheapo Olympus FE-210 pocket for street photography.
  24. Visited KBR last week. 9M-MGK 9M-AFJ 9M-FYA Flight school - cadets watching FY's new ATR
  25. Spotted 9M-FYA at KBR on 18 August, landed 1230 hours...... probably on a test flight before entering service the following day 19th.
