Second disaster for TransAsia Airways

TAIPEI - More than 40 people are awaiting rescue after their TransAsia Airways plane crashed into a river in New Taipei City, news reports said on Wednesday.

The ATR-72 turboprop aircraft with 58 onboard was flying from Taipei to the offshore island of Kinmen when it crashed into the Keelung River after apparently ramming into a highway viaduct, Taiwan's Central News Agency (CNA) said. Taiwan's United Daily News said about 10 people have been sent to hospital, and more than 40 are still awaiting rescue.

The New Taipei City Fire Department has despatched five rescue teams, equipped with speed boats, to the accident site near the Nanyang Bridge in Xizhi district, CNA said.

Mr Wang Hsing-chung, an Aviation Safety Council spokesman, was cited as saying investigators were heading for the site to find out the reason for the crash.

TransAsia, a privately-owned airline, had suffered a serious crash last July, when flight GE222 crashed near the airport at Magong on the Penghu island chain during a rainstorm, killing 48 people and injuring 10 others. That aircraft was also an ATR-72.

I think investigators understand the cause of accident clearly by this dashcam video. Sadly accident. It seems like stall with/or lost power. FDR will be say what happened in fact.

This is TransAsia's 4th ATR-72 hull loss since 1995 according to Aviation Safety Network. Another ATR-72 crash on Magong island last year.

The odds of having two crashes in a year seems to be quite high nowadays.

just I'm curious, is it possible power lost (flameout) in both engine in the same time? whats are the possible reasons of thats? dirty fuel, electro-mechanic failure of fuel pumps or propeller feather, bird strikes to both engines, engine stall on turbine with excessive AoA etc??

If that is true, it looks like the left wing stalled and caused it to tip to the left and roll over.

Data from FR24 shows the speed only reached a max of 116kts just after takeoff. Went downhill after that

Either that or it's the pilots' deliberate attempt to head left to avoid hitting something. As sad as it is with the current outcome, it could have been far worse if the plane hit something else.

Sorry amendment, at 9pm, 25 died, 15 injured and 18 missing.

According to the news, it is believed that the left turboprop had stopped working suddenly which caused the aircraft to bank left. The left turbo props was replaced not too long ago and had done around 800 hours. The right one had done around 1000 hours.
