MAS Privatisation

2 airlines is not a monopoly, but it is an oligopoly. Which is just as bad.

With the previous two CEOs, they had a stable & receptive government. With the current CEO, he doesn't. That's why it looks like he is quiet.

Also unlike the previous two CEOs, the current CEO has been with the company way back, even before the existence of AirAsia, even before ground broke for the building of KLIA. Hence he knows the need to be careful when dealing with this government.

Thanks and I don't disagree.

From my experience (non aviation) the people I know who have been with a firm many years and risen to the top often don't want to rock the boat too much, doing what's right for them as opposed whats right for the company. Im not privy to the inner working of MAB so Im not saying its the case here etc etc

In these challenging days of US-China trade wars, even airlines like SQ are finding it difficult.

I think SQ is finding it difficult due to Chinese carriers. All Asian carriers will find it difficult once China perfects their transit flow ;) Have you seen how cheap fares are from China (or on Chinese carriers)?

As I mentioned before the current CEO is very quiet and I wonder if its really a political issue or is it just that the leadership lacks the balls to to make change happen?

I don't want a CEO who makes a lot of PR statements but does nothing for the company. I want a CEO who knows what he's doing. The less noise, the better :)

Malaysia have 32 million people and 3 more or less big airlines.

Germany have 83 million people and it was not possible to establish Air Berlin as second big player beside Lufthansa.

Competion is great yes - and you pay for it with your taxes...around RM32 from every malay for MAS in 2018!

And you forget that Ryanair and Easyjet have huge bases in Germany as well. AB's hub was in TXL and to a certain extent, DUS (both aren't exactly high yielding cities, DUS maybe but not compared to FRA/MUC).

RM32 per year for every Malaysian for subsidized air travel? Sign me up please ;) Where else can you get 15€ domestic flight on a full service carrier?

Honestly Malindo hardly features at the top of the minds of most Malaysians. I don't think their impact to the situation is that big.

40 jets, 7 Million passengers last year...yes no big impact :nea:

Im living near Berlin so i know the situation very well! Especially when my company have to pay up to 500 Euro oneway for a domestic flight to Cologne from Berlin ;-). Thsi year all airlines will make big losses in Berlin and Düsseldorf too cause of overcapacity. The same situation is now in Malaysia...

RM32 = Loss from MAS last year / 32 Mill malay people

We have seen the bankruptcy and recovery of JAL. We have also seen the demise of Jet Airways in India. Surely, we can learn from these two cases.

If we're going to truly emulate the Japanese and Singapoeans, this country will have to undergo some fundamental changes in the way it's run. And we all know how some Malaysians feel about change.

Right. I forgot LH is the one and only way for Germans to get around.

I'm not a Malay but a Malaysian and I'd be happy to pay that RM32 for my share of goodies.

What use is competition for you if the airlines do not make any profits? That is the basic requirement for a substantial business model or not?

What use is a monopoly if you can't afford to fly?

Not sure what you're trying to argue here. On one hand you think competition is bad but on the other you bemoan the EUR500 tickets on a ~500km journey. Edited by Chris Tan

Yes when you consider that MH carries that amount in just two quarters...

I've spoken with friends & family on the ground here in Malaysia - Malindo is the last choice for them every single time.

Heck, when I flew with Malindo to Taipei back in 2017, it was only because I was using an aggregator site & I found their flight to fit my needs in terms of time of arrival. If it hadn't been for that, I never would have thought that they flew to Taipei!

I took Malindo both ways for BKI - KUL for just below RM400 just 2 weeks ago. That's about the same price on AK minus luggage, seat selection etc. In fact i would suggest OD as the first option to look at if you want space plus luggage but not at MH price, although sometimes MH price is reasonable too.

Yes, and sometimes, they have a better flight schedule as well. However, be careful when booking Malindo flights - they have a low cost fare that does not have a luggage allowance these days, useful when two or more people travel and don't have many checked-in bags.

Malindo B737s are also more comfortable as they have 32" seat pitch.

What is the main issue with them?

I much prefer the 737 product but their delays can be bad sometimes and their turnaround procedure seems very slow.

Yes indeed but I realised that the more people travel, the less likely you will use the cargo luggage, at least from my experience. 4 pax means 28kg carry onboard. That's a lot. Plus the slow luggage delivery system at KLIA is something worth considering.

My original flight ETD 0800 was cancelled so they put me on the next flight at 11am. No biggy, flight cancellations happens all the time.

Oddly enough, they have 2 flight on my return to BKI departing at 0705 and 0800. Mine was on the 0800. Aircraft re-positioning perhaps.

OD was notorious in flights delay and cancellation otherwise could be the first choice for many travellers.

Most new airlines, MH/AK included, go through this phase. There will be a period of time when their fleet is too small to have replacement aircraft to cover for their aircraft going tech. This is usually also the time when the airline is too small and does not sell enough seats - so they have to cancel some flights and consolidate pax from two or more flights so as not to operate empty, loss making, flights.

It is a penny wise pounds foolish decision. Those experienced or heard of cancellation or delay are unlikely to have od as first choice airlines.

I disagree. It's all in the planning for your trip. If you are concern with delays then plan ahead, a bit more if necessary. Back then when AK service was dodgy you always plan for delay/cancellation etc.

Bear in mind that flight delays is not a thing of the past, still happening today. Sometimes even AK or MH cancel their flight "Due to operational requirements".

If one has the luxury of time to plan or allow flight cancellation by all means. When I pay for something, I expect certain certainty. Unless I don't have a choice, better to pay/play uncertainty in casino.

I think that today's travellers do not have too much loyalty to airlines anymore. They tend to go for deals, bundles, etc. that make their travels cheaper, more interesting, more convenient, etc.

I don't have OD as my first choice. Neither do I have AK or MH. It all depends on who can offer me a deal that is acceptable to me. In my experience, Malaysian airlines are losing out as I find that I am booking more of my travels on non-Malaysian airlines. They offer better deals!

So MAB really has to work harder to attract more customers.

You're free to pay SQ prices but you can only be so sure.

9V-STU was AOG in KUL yesterday. I'm sure a lot of people paid good money to be on that cancelled flight.

So much for certainty.

Technical issue is acceptable. Everyone has different priority.

Everything breaks down at one point or another. A plan may go awry at anytime as many things go beyond ones control.

It is the quality (or lack there of) service recovery effort that differentiates the very good airlines from the just-OK ones.

MI 341 (9V-SLS) was also delayed after a flight computer fault whilst heading to the runway. Crew did a good job proving drinks and managed to get some croissants delivered for Y passengers

He attended Harvard for seven-week short course program though never earn official college/grad school degree (apart from his stint in the airline for almost 40 years). I felt divided...

US universities offer plenty of those short course programs (mostly in summer - "Summer School") where anyone is free to apply and it's usually non-competitive. You'd be taught by the same high calibre professors (as I assume you would in Harvard). I went to an Ivy league school for summer school (so I can get my second degree faster) and a few of my friends went to Harvard/MIT for summer school :)

Having a degree is not a measure of intelligence. I know Ph.D holders who are dumb, and I know SPM holders who are smart.

Have just booked the following KUL-SIN flights and as per the seat map its an A330-200

16/6 MH613

21/6 MH616

Wonder if this is correct because I didn't see any notification of equipment change etc?

Why would MH notify you of equipment change if, as you had described, you had just bought the ticket and the equipment was already a 332?

Anyway, MH never advises equipment change but only seat change if this has been preselected.
