KLIA2 - New Mega Low Cost Carriers Terminal

Recommended Posts

To be fair, although a lot of the growth was driven by Air Asia, our MTB and satellite building traffic still grew, albeit at a lower rate: this is because other foreign airlines actually increased their presence and number of pax. However, MH offset that by reducing their ops. (See azizul's data on KLIA pax ops).

Now that we are propelled into the top 30 airports of the world, and will soon be a oneworld hub.. I think KLIA will be on the radar more often. Also don't forget that the greater KL population is 6 million.

Also don't forget that the greater KL population is 6 million.

Can't be too sure of gomen statistics; Greater London population was about 7.83 million in 2010.

On the side note, London M25 radius is varies from 13 (20.8km) to 22 (35.2km) miles from Charing Cross.

Hope that MAHB will not postponed KLIA2 opening as the dates getting closer like what BER facing rite now. :(

They are quite capable of that and I won't be at all surprised if they announced a further delay next year.

KLIA 2's opening date has been postponed a few times already.

Believed that KLIA2 planned opening in APRIL 2013 will not going to happen as still alot of work have yet to be done esp the runway and and its terminal tarmac areas - its very likely that when it does finally open for service it will be last quarter of 2013 at best.

Construction not my expertise but from what i see they need to complete everything by end of this year... Jan to March will be more on testing of the systems and etc. So lets see how they perform until end of this year.. 7 months to go :D

Wow, the aerobridge was built prior to the taxiways? Guess there should be point of no return... It's massive because it's not meant to accommodate AK passengers, but also other operators...

KLIA2 On Track To Operate By April 2013, Says Osk Research

KUALA LUMPUR, June 4 (Bernama) -- KLIA2, the new Low-Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) in Sepang is on track for full operations by April 2013, OSK Research says.

In a research note today, it said with the construction now 51.78 per cent complete, the project was 89.9 days ahead of its original works schedule.

"This will provide room for the its existing operations to make the transition to the new terminal," it said.

The research house said for the first time, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) had organised a site visit for the investment community to witness the progress of construction at KLIA2.

"We note that the upcoming KLIA2, which will be the world's largest low cost carrier terminal with an annual capacity to handle 45 million passengers, is designed with the flexibility to accommodate future growth and expansion," it said.

It added that KLIA2 would offer retail space of close to four times that in the current LCCT, and the revenue to be potentially chalked up might amount an additional RM120 million, at the very least.

The response from retailers has been overwhelming, with over 700 applicants eyeing the 225 outlets up for rental.

"We see MAHB generating strong cash flow not only from the rising demand for travel but also from the development of townships near KLIA.

"Of the RM345.4 million earned from rental and royalties, only RM158 million is contributed by KLIA and LCCT, with shares of RM122 million and RM37 million respectively.

"Since KLIA2 will have a higher portion of retail-related outlets, the revenue is expected to be higher in view of the higher average retail selling prices," OSK Research said.

The research firm also maintained its "buy" call on MAHB with an unchanged fair value of RM7.53.

What's with the new terminal?

Jul 04, 2012

Categories: Customers, Others

When KLIA2 was first proposed, Malaysia Airports (MAHB) said it would cost RM2 billion, a figure that was later revised to RM2.6 billion. Then came news that the terminal would cost RM4 billion, double the original estimate.

Now there’s talk that the bill could go as high as RM5 billion. That makes no sense — the low-cost terminal will now cost much more than KLIA. Yes, I asked for a new terminal but one that has simple facilities. Did it have to cost 20 times our present LCCT?

These overruns are matched by delays in the completion date. MAHB originally said KLIA2 would be up and running by September 2011. Opening day was then pushed to the first, and later, the second quarter of 2012.

Well, here we are and construction is only half done. We’ve been told the terminal will only be operational by the first quarter of next year at the earliest or possibly early 2014 but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Those who attack me for questioning MAHB say I’m arrogant. But this isn’t attitude, it’s about not settling for second place and challenging things that are not right. Corporate Malaysia has to tell our leaders what’s wrong.

Neither is this about government-linked companies versus private ones. It’s about being the best, period.

I am proud to be Malaysian and want this country to excel. But an undependable airport operator does no one any favours, not least when our neighbours are taking aggressive steps to tap into the rapid growth of low-cost carriers.

Already Thailand has made Don Mueang the low-cost hub for Bangkok. The Philippines too has designated Clark as the gateway for no-frills carriers. Singapore is building a new budget terminal which will more than double capacity to 16 million passengers a year from seven million.

It’s clear the world won’t wait for MAHB to get its act together. Time is running out.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 4 — DAP’s Tony Pua today urged the government to probe the new KLIA2 low-cost airport’s construction cost, which he says may now “balloon” to RM5 billion from the initial budget of RM 1.7 billion.

Pua was referring to AirAsia’s chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes’ blog post today, where the latter had written: “Now there’s talk that the bill could go as high as RM5 billion”.

“[T]he new estimated cost of KLIA2, RM5 billion, is now nearly 200 per cent above the original budget of RM1.7 billion,” Pua said today

He added that Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) had last year “shocked Malaysians by disclosing that the cost of the new airport has ballooned to RM3.9 billion due to cost overruns in November 2011.”

“In the interest of transparency and accountability, the prime minister must order a full public investigation into how the cost of the new ‘low cost’ airport could be so inflated and ensure that all who are responsible for the RM5 billion fiasco be sacked from their office, including ... the Minister of Transport,” said Pua.

The Petaling Jaya Utara MP had in March claimed the transport minister’s vague response to questions about the rising cost of the KLIA2 construction “shows that there is something to hide.”

“I asked Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha about the reason for the shift of the airport... the minister only responded that the decision in the shift was ‘based on KLIA Blueprint December 2008’,” said Pua.

“The sheer nonchalance and lack of willingness to provide clarification shows that there is something to hide,” he added.

Pua had blamed the jump in KLIA2 construction cost on the significant earthworks required at the low-cost carrier terminal’s new site in KLIA West.

He had said the cost would probably go up further due to the construction of an additional control tower and the unsuitable terrain.

In February, Pua slammed MAHB managing director Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad for saying late last year that public funds would not be used to fund the cost increases at KLIA2.

Pua, who is also DAP publicity chief, pointed out that despite the earlier denial, MAHB said it will raise approximately RM598 million from a proposed share placement exercise.

“The action by MAHB to raise additional funds from the market proves that public financial interest has been compromised as a result of the RM2.2 billion increase in cost of KLIA2.

“Existing major shareholders of MAHB, which act indirectly as trustees to government and public funds, are forced to dilute their shareholding by 10 per cent as a result of the exercise,” he said, adding MAHB had also raised a debt of RM3.1 billion in 2010.

Kong, however, said in January that his ministry was not involved in the decision to shift sites as it was decided by MAHB alone.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 5 (Bernama) -- Suggestions that KLIA2, the new low-cost terminal at Sepang, near here, will cost RM5 billion because of cost overruns appear to be misguided, say sources close to the project.

They said that costs could rise to RM5 billion if certain parties dictated terms to Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) to build additional facilities not in the current plan.

"As of now, everything is under control and the cost of construction will remain at RM3.9 billion," said one of the well-placed sources.

On claims that the airport would not be completed by its deadline of April 2013, the sources said that construction was on schedule and it was not a question of whether the airport would be ready on time but whether the operators of low-cost airlines could get their act together by then.

It is understood that certain systems for the check-in counters have yet to be submitted to MAHB although the deadline was June 15 this year.

In addition, there are also questions whether facilities undertaken by other parties (not MAHB) like hotels and office buildings would be ready by the second quarter of next year.

The sources said KLIA2 could have been completed this year if not for last-minute requests by certain quarters which consequently extended the schedule.

They said that the costs had also gone up from the original RM2 billion because of requests for additional facilities.

Originally, KLIA2 was to be only a two-storey high building, but this has been increased to an equivalent of nine storeys for a three-level terminal comprising separate departure, arrival and ground support equipment areas.

This meant that the gross floor area of the terminal building has been increased by 71 per cent to 257,000 sq metres from the original 150,000 sq metres.

The sources said the KLIA2 would be the world's largest purpose-built low- cost terminal with a capacity to accommodate 45 million passengers annually.

They said it was also being built at the lowest cost per passenger with aerobridges and enhanced passenger convenience.

"With the aerobridges, passengers need not walk on the apron anymore," they added.

They said although industry standards dictated that 55 boarding gates would be sufficient to handle 30 million passengers annually, MAHB had accommodated requests to increase the number of boarding gates to 68.

MAHB had also made provisions for a fully automated baggage handling system although there had been earlier requests for a non-fully automated one.

To cater for higher passenger traffic, MAHB had even drew up plans to accommodate the superjumbo Airbus 380 aircraft as well as premium lounges for enhanced passenger comfort.

Under its current construction plan, MAHB had also provided for the construction of four hotels and a public shopping mall next to the terminal.
