Direct flights to regional cities

KUALA TERENGGANU: There will be direct flights between Kuala Terengganu and cities like Hong Kong, Bangkok, Shanghai, Singapore and Macau from November if plans to turn the new Kuala Terengganu International Airport into a second low-cost carrier (LLC) hub materialise.

The state government is in the midst of convincing several low-cost carriers from Singapore, Bangkok, the Philippines and China to use the new airport as their regional gateway.

State Infrastructure Development, Amenity and Communication Committee official Datuk Wan Hisham Wan Salleh told The Star that talks were in the final stages to have these carriers start their operations here.

“Tourists from these countries can fly directly to Kuala Terengganu and head straight to holiday isles here without transiting in Kuala Lumpur,” he said yesterday.

Wan Hisham said the current runway was being extended to accommodate Boeing 747s. Work is expected to be completed by November.

Currently, the airport can cater for the Boeing 777 and Airbus.

The multi-storey terminal with aero-bridge is also nearing completion.

On the present number of flights, Wan Hisham said the number was still limited.

“There are times where the flights are not fully booked but on most occasions there are huge number of passengers,”

“We can suggest to the airlines to increase their flights during peak days but this is their prerogative,” he said.

He said the projected increase in flights was also in line with the development of the East Coast Economic Region where new projects will witness the arrival of investors, some of whom would want to make day trips.

Meanwhile, Wan Hisham said call metered taxis will be introduced in Kuala Terengganu city, very soon.

He said 30 taxis will be equipped with such facilities under the first phase and the fleet size would be increased gradually.

“These taxis will come under Cas Ligas, a state government-owned company that manages Inter-City buses,” he added.

He said the company is also tasked with initiating a boat cruise service along the scenic Sungai Terengganu, connecting Shahbandar jetty to the Islamic Civilisation Park in Pulau Wan Man.

Few years ago when I live in Kemaman. Kemaman has a very big reserve area behind the industrial park, If anyone familiar with Kemaman, the area is known as Mak Lagam, which is behind Kg Fikri. I was thinking that Kemaman can be a good center for the east Gateway since it's like in the middle between Kuantan and Kuala Terengganu. Nowadays, Kemaman is even busier then Kuala Terengganu. And what I've heard from the local, that reserve area is even bigger then KLIA parameter.

I reserve the more intelligent and in-depth analysis to others. I just want to point out that the name 'Cas Ligas' is so interesting!

It means 'quick, active and agile' in the Kelantanese/Terengganu lingo! How appropriately local!

Perhaps with the new multi-storey terminal and everything, Terengganu government should also set up a new state-owned airline called 'Air CasLigas' or something instead of asking others to fly in. Looks so very good on paper, doesn't it Che Derih?

Signature dish must naturally be the kepok lekorLosong!

Great spotting, Ewan! I missed that 'cahligah' bit. And 'Air CasLigas' gives me the impression of a flock of little planes flying all over the place at breakneck pace, like a swarm of green flies over piles of ... :D

I think the islamic state of Kelantan should try to promote Gua Musang as an international airport site. Good location wot, excellent highways (except in rainy season, maybe) to Krai/KB, Ipoh, Kuala Trengganu, Lipis/Raub/KL. It's a real hub, man!

So 777 for TGG is not enough, need to extend runway to 747-capable length? Perhaps Malaysia is trying to get into the Guiness Book of Records: First country to have every single one of its airports 747-capable, no matter how small the airport is.

Yup, if you are looking for the real heart of the Malaysian peninsular, Gua Musang is it!

UMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM...

let's be sensible and realistic. are there enough people to be transported between HKG / ICN / NRT regularly on a 300 seater plane from TGG? When it was a struggle to breakeven ( what more make money) at more popular secondary hubs such as KCH - MEL , KCH - PER , (or ever BKI - SYD ) - MH/Australian withdrew those servises right ? Bare in mind that statistically there are more affluent Sarawakians / Sabahans that travel regionally than Trengganeese ( no offence) and they (BKI / KCH) have more developed tourism products.

Not to mention the role of KUL as a hub would be compromised.

I'm concerned that this TGG development would be the classic "White Elephant", and if there routes were to be introduced, it has to be subsidised.

It is appreciated that TGG / KBR / KUA do have great tourism potentials ; and foreigners are in need for natural beauty and eco tourism these days- this is what these three east coast airports could take advantage. Developments that are not carefully planned and thought would drain our resources.

For LCC pax, the Terengganu states government will construct high speed rail from TGG to Kuantan, Bersut (Kelantan border) and Genting Highland. The high gradient track from Raub/Bentong to Genting highland will be the first in the world for high speed train including bridges taller than the Millau bridge in France.

Next, the states government will build a space port complete with launch pad, buy a Soyuz from Russia and send keropok lekor, batik, dry meat and salted fish to ISS (more world records and history).

High speed rail would cost at least RM 5 - 10 million per kilometre ( excluding locomotive and carriage cost). Are u saying that we need to use our national coffers for something that may not get financial benefit for majority of us?. I'll rather spend the high speed rail project for PEN/AOR - IPH - KUL - MKZ - JHB ! At least majority of population would enjoy.

NMR,

I believe KKLee was just being sarcastic :)

On the other hand, this being Bolehland, anything could happen.

Maybe they need a multi daily flights using the B747 or better yet, the A380 to connect TGG and IPH and taiping. Remember the plans for Perak? Especially the fly first, pay later airline.

Oops, sorry, that was so last year....

The gomen is paying US$10 million per km for double track from Ipoh to Padang Besar, high speed rail will certainly cost more.

Good call there - remember we have an aspiring ISS commander (in waiting perhaps) who just happens to be of Malaysian origin ? Well, how else we gonna get those stuff to him when he gets homesick whilst commandering the ISS ? You can't expect the Ruskkies or Yanks to oblige all the time you know :)

Kuantan pulak dah, nak jadik world class airport.

Kuantan port and airport to be upgraded

The Star, Tuesday January 22, 2008

By SIMON KHOO

KUANTAN: Two separate studies are being conducted to upgrade and enhance facilities in Kuantan Port and Kuantan Airport, according to Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy.

He said both studies would be completed by the middle of this year before being submitted to the Cabinet. “Once a decision is made on the proposals, we will proceed to carry out upgrading works.

“The Federal Government will be injecting a substantial amount of investments to make Kuantan a logistics hub for the country, in line with proposals under the East Coast Economic Region (ECER),” he said after opening the East Coast Exposition on Sunday.

Bla bla bla...

Chan said the study of Kuantan Airport would concentrate on expansion of the runway and terminal building, in addition to upgrading of public facilities.

“These two projects will be given priority under the ECER launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi last October. The recent floods in the east coast states will not delay or impede the development projects,” he said.

Please la, even at the moment AirAsia pun doesn't want to fly to KUA.

I think Malaysian states are somehow trying to mimicking the emirates (states/province) in the UAE, where all emirates, no matter how small it is, wanting it's own big airport and 'flag' carrier. Well, at least they can afford to build their own airport and establish their own airlines ON THEIR OWN and most importantly, managed to excellently sustain them. For example:

- EK and DXB (and soon JXB) for the Emirates of Dubai,

- EY and AUH (and soon Midfield Complex) for the Emirates of Abu Dhabi, and

- Air Arabia and SHJ for the Emirates of Sharjah.

As it is, KUA is a quiete airport with just the prestigeous MH, and equally prestigeous, if not more prestigeous insect airline FY. There was some worry that KUA would be a 'dead' airport when the East Coast highway was opened. When the highway is fully completed covering Terengganu and south of Kelantan, then there is little need for flights between the east coast states and travel will be quicker by road compared to now.

But then again, it seems there are some people who are 'in a hurry' to construct new airports here and there..... like as if time may run out and the 'opportunity to make loads of money' diminishes.

Kuantan port and airport will be developed as the air/sea cargo super hub for East Asia. Goods destined to Middle East from Japan, Korea and Taiwan will be shipped to Kuantan port and transferred to Kuantan airport for air freight to final destinations.

Second runway will be constructed at Kuantan airport so that cargo operation won’t be restricted by RMAF. Six lanes elevated highway will be built to the port to reduce cargo transit time to minimum. The gomen will grant tax free incentive to courier companies FedEx, UPS, DHL to relocate their hub to Kuantan.

The air cargo complex at Kuantan will include the world FIRST climate controlled facility for live sheep going to Middle East during haj season. Ministry of Agriculture working with LKIM will encourage Thai fisherman to unload their catch at Kuantan port to air freight shashimi grade tuna to Japan. Ministry of Agriculture will request Malaysian airline to start regular cargo service to Japan for shipment of water melon, duku langsat from the 3 east coast states.

During the flood in December 07, Pekan town was cut off and air dropped of supplies was carried out by RMAF. The Gomen will build a airport in Pekan town to keep the town connected during the monsoon flood. This airport will also serve as tourist gateway to the east coast. Air service to Tioman and other holiday islands will be mounted from Pekan. For direct air link to middle east, the airport will be capable to handle long range Boeing 787 and Airbus A350. To stay above worst flood, the runway at Pekan will be elevated like a bridge, the world FIRST elevated runway. A yacht club will be located within the airport, private tourists can step on to their yacht without leaving the airport.

Penang Airport so 'old' and look very 'poor'

Agree that PEN is 'old'...the terminal is about 25 years old now. But I think it is one of the livelier airports in the country, with plenty of quality retail outlets to shop or while around, and gates within bearable walking distance. Plus the view from the departure hall is great for spotting. Having been to all of the newly built / refurbished airports around the country, PEN beats them all.

My pick for the worst 'new' terminal is LBU. Lousy retail outlets, the ERAMAN duty-free is not well-stocked, and many retail lots not taken up yet.

Agreed with Rozhan on this. The building may be old but it's got soul. All the new steel and glass airports feel cold and impersonal by comparison.
