Abel E 0 Report post Posted September 10, 2006 (edited) Here's a liitle story I want to share with you guys. A retired RMAF pilot told me about this. It's about how Malaysia ended up with F-18s, in a short, summarized way.... -Najib approached Boeing/McDonald Douglas to buy F-16 -Boeing/McDonald Douglas told us to go f#!* ourself cos we can't afford the technology -Mahathir told Najib to buy Mig29s instead and the Russians said ok. They will sell us anything we want. -Boeing/McDonald Douglas found out, they reconsidered, and offered to sell us the F-16. -Mahathir told Najib to tell the Americans that we will only buy the F-18, otherwise tell them to go f#!* themselves. -Boeing/McDonald Douglas agreed So that is how we are one of the few lucky ones to have F-18s in our line up. I did some homework and found this on Boeing website: Worldwide Deployment The F/A-18 has been deployed by the armed services of the following nations: United States (Navy and Marines), Canada, Australia, Spain, Kuwait, Finland, Switzerland, and Malaysia. Don't you feel proud? having the F-18 is good but i head RMAF does not provide with the weapon code for the bombs and missle.. i am sure the US get pissed when we bought SU-30MKM who know right? Azman MN 1 Report post Posted September 10, 2006 yeah nice story about the bargaining tactics... but not proud at all about all the under the table payments to all the middlemen... Surely some $$million went into some people's pockets...
Maarof Kassim 0 Report post Posted September 10, 2006 If you all don't know already. Malaysia did not actually 'buy' the Russian fighters. They are part of our barter trade with the Russians where we exchange our palm oil for their planes.
Sandeep G 1 Report post Posted September 11, 2006 having the F-18 is good but i head RMAF does not provide with the weapon code for the bombs and missle.. i am sure the US get pissed when we bought SU-30MKM who know right? The SU-30MKMs were decided upon finally after futile discussions with Boeing/McDonnell Douglas on the purchase of 18-20 FA/18 E/F Super Hornets. The US Congress would only approve the purchase of 8 aircraft and TUDM required 18. Boeing/McDonnell Douglas were not happy as this was a multi-billion dollar deal. Malaysia simply said, we'll take our money elsewhere, and went to the Ruskies! Now, we have an airforce that has a fleet and an order book that makes some western airforces weeeppp! BUT! They sigh a relief when they realise that Malaysia is famous for the "tiada apa" attitude and we don't have enough pilots to fly all these beautiful birds Oh wellll hopefully this changes fast And for all of you that want McDonald Douglas', please buy a happy meal
