MAS: KL-Stockholm-Newark route stays

November 9 2006

MALAYSIA Airlines System Bhd (MAS) will retain the Kuala Lumpur-Stockholm-Newark return route in its international network beyond January 15 2007.

The national carrier had earlier announced that it will cease flight operations on this route but will now continue operating its thrice weekly flights on Monday, Thursday and Saturday using a 282-seater Boeing B777-200 aircraft.

In a statement, MAS managing director and chief executive officer Idris Jala said the airline reviewed the route in response to a call from the Government to reconsider its earlier decision.

"We have now teamed up with Tourism Malaysia to aggressively market Visit Malaysia Year 2007 in these two markets and we now have very encouraging forward booking enquiries for next year," he added.

In addition, MAS also received encouraging consideration and support from airport authorities for the continued "Malaysian" presence at Arlanda, Stockholm and Newark, US.

Hmmm....let's hope that they make it good this time - they need to have at least 5 weekly to compete!!!

This is the roller coaster that is MAS.. Let's just hope what they are saying is true... But I tell you what this DOESNT do.. and that's favour the transparency and credibility of the MAS managment which in turn does not help with share price...

Government kacau again!

Anyway, it don't matter really even if MAS is losing money, at the end of the day, there is still the Government. CEOs come and go, but still they will have "bottomless" cash pile for them to burn.

Whose money? ours la!

MAS share price was in the top ten gainer in KLSE yesterday. Was this because of the news of MAS to stay Newark & ARN route ???

Not sure why... but I believe the news release was later in the day/evening??

Yeah that stock market is really rising nicely!! Some of the top gainers recently seem to be GLCs... good thing seeing that UMNO General Assembly is around the corner

Hope KUL-ARN-EWR can go daily :)

That's the ONLY way to 'fight' SQ in this market: daily frequency AND also a better schedule ex KUL to provide better connections; it's a shame, really, politics are ruling the airline business at MAS

Let's hope that MH will able to compete with SQ on this market :good:

Uncle, MAS is a GLC - Goverment Link Company...

Idham is right,Uncle Pieter.MAS is a GLC,so government do have rights to intervene.

Will the Government also 'support' MAS financially on this route for the hefty losses they incur ?

In a way, the Malaysian taxpayers are 'fined' this way for a prestige destination, just like BUE :o

Code-sharing with other airlines, like suggested above, would have been a lot better and given the customers a lot more choices (of frequencies)...3x a week ain't just not enough :nea:

Hopefully MAS continues with the codesharing dealing and therefore provides FAR more frequencies via Schipol whilst maintaining a physical presence (albeit at 3 times a week) in both Stockholm and Newark..

Then at least PAX are able to fly MH KUL-ARN-EWR and the return journey could be via KL/MH codeshare EWR-AMS-KUL (if the pax requires to travel on a day other than those served by MAS physically) Similarily with ARN.. KUL-ARN with MH and ARN-AMS-KUL via KL/MH codeshare...

Thought it was Federal Aviation Regulations at first sight.

Happy with the route continuation!

Exactly what I meant, Sandeep, go on MH one way and/or return code-share via AMS/CDG or even FCO ?!

That would be logical, and profitable for everyone and PAVE the way for entry into Skyteam... but this IS MAS management and the Government we are dealing with.... *Runs ducks hides* (Copyright: Gibby)

Not exactly. MAS is a "badan tidak berkanun". The government can appoint who they think are capable of running the airline but not in decision making within the airline. But of course they didn't always follow the rule :D :D

Pieter,

What's stopping MH from piggybacking on KLM's transatlantic services via AMS? Seems like an obvious solution for Malaysia's need to link with US East coast. It doesn't have to wait until Skyteam membership does it? Unless MH has a strategic codeshare partner, they'd have to serve loss-making but important routes themselves.

The only thing "stopping" them is the Malaysian Government... MAS was in pursuit of signing 5 new-code share agreements this year.. so far, the only one I can think of is Virgin Blue in Australia...
