Wah RM 100 is a lot...cant afford to fail again lor. I wish you best of luck so that you can go spot planes day and night. :)

Just got back from eye spotting with Samuel. Saw B772 and Silk Air A319. We were at the end of rwy 02 and was standing at the bush direct to the left RR engine of -MRC. We were standing about 400-500 meters away and I was blown off balance where Samuel have the best time running towards the low fence when 777 rotating. And surprisingly the RR engines weren't noisy at the back than it was at the front.

The heat wind was similar to being blown by hairdryer (except added with A1 fuel aroma) and moments after that we were chased away by the patrollers. I think must be the 772 flight crews report about us standing close to the runway while taxing.

I don't think so. They've got better things to do. As for the patrollers, that is a different story.

How long does it take to drive from SDK airport to the City centre? I have been to Sandakan by car from Tawau and to the airport on that awful TWU-SDK-BKI-KUL long flight, but have never been out of the airport myself. Anyone would like to share some info?

SDK's runway is quite long, even longer than new TWU. Wonder if the 744 will be able to land on there. I once took a 744 to SDK from TWU on FS2004, obviously TWU cannot handle it, but seems like it can fit at SDK.

The airport is 8 miles away from the city center.. and there's possibility of heavy traffic jams somwhere halfway. I would give it around 20 mins, maybe half an hour...but I only been there for one day... maybe unrelieable memory info.

That is still way better than the new Tawau airport, situated some 28km away from the centre. It is now closer to Semporna, but I feel sorry for the residence of Kalabakan, a township to the west of Tawau

Well i guess it's in between Tawau and Semporna now. I'ts good also since I saw few outlets are selling AirAsia tickets in Semporna. They just can go to the airport about 1.5 hours away.

Nah closer than that Adrian. From Lahad Datu to Tawau by car is around 2 hours. From Semporna to Tawau is just one hour. I think it will take 40 mins to get to the new Tawau airport from Semporna ;)

BC, does this indicate that she is in charge in your family?

for the local, we always quote the airport as mile 7 (~13 km) from the town centre. Normal day should take u 15 to 20 min. but during peak hrs, easily one hr or more as traffic jam will start daily from mile 8 all the way to the duchess of kent hospital junction at mile 2. the jam along Jalan Utara is jus terrible. the only alternative from town to airport is still under construction!

SDK's runway is 7000ft long, shorter than the one at new TWU airport (9000ft or sth close if i'm not wrong). i think SDK can only cater to A330, not sure any other widebody can land as i myself have not seen any widebody at SDK before haha.....

i was standing rite at the end of rwy08 trying to catch some take-off back in feb... only on my way back that i noticed that there r this row of kampung house built slightly up a hill along the runway perimeter (as sv chong mentioned). wil definitely check it out for my next outing there. ;)

wow guys... tat RSAF Fokker really made all the MH Fokker jealous, which in turn makes me jealous... hehe... miss BKI and the Fokker. anyways, sam and adrian, good thing u guys now utilising that runway 02 end more then I did. Tat is probably one of the best place to spot. probably closer than u'll ever get at Princess Julianna (St Marteen).

Haha Dante, BKI is greatly misses you, we need you back. :p We try going there but those darn patrollers keep try to boot us away. At least you have more luck than us coz u have the staff passes so the patrollers have nothing to say.

I think it's exactly like Princess Juliana (SXM) with less heavies and strict airport control. Seriously we need to show them we come in peace for spotting and not taking a free ride under the plane or stole a plane away.

:sigh:

NEWS Project To Upgrade Airport Gives Priority To National Interest

April 11, 2006 21:00 PM

By Newmond Tibin

KOTA KINABALU, April 11 (Bernama) -- The project to expand and upgrade the Kota Kinabalu International Airport is a project of national interest and will symbolise Sabah's success.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said the project would enable more aircraft including bigger ones to land and bring more tourists from international destinations, not merely to benefit a fraction of the community.

"The Sabah people in general will enjoy the spillovers, either directly or otherwise, besides the hotel and service sectors.

"When there are more foreign tourists, the market for local handicraft products will expand, the travel industry and homestay activity will also flourish," he told Bernama here Tuesday.

Operators of transport services like taxis and boats, tour guides and restaurant owners would surely gain from the economic cake made bigger by the airport expansion, he said.

Sabah, known as the Land Below the Wind, has many interesting tourist destinations like the Kinabalu Park and Poring Hotspring in Ranau, Sepilok and Selingan in Sandakan, Sempang Mengayau in Kudat and Sungai Padas in Beaufort, besides the islands in the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park in the state capital.

Sabah Bumiputera Chamber of Commerce president Datuk Ahmad Ali Lope Abdul Aziz said these areas would benefit economically from the state government's decision to expand the second busiest airport in the country after the KL International Airport in Sepang.

He said according to plan, the runway would be lengthened from 2.9 km to 3.8 km by reclaiming the sea at the tip of the existing runway known as Sri Tanjung.

The main terminal building will be able to accommodate four Boeing 747s, one Airbus 330s, seven Boeing 737s, three Fokker 50s and three Dornier aircraft at the same time compared to only one Boeing 747, one Airbus 330, four Boeing 737, four Fokker 50s and two Dorniers presently.

The build-up of space of the terminal building will also be expanded from 25,487 sq m to 79,000 sq m, hence doubling its capacity to nine million passengers annually from about four million currently.

Ahmad Ali said the project would also involve the construction of a new low-cost carrier terminal.

"The upgrading and expansion of the airport emphasizes national interest and takes into consideration the needs and interests of the future generation.

"It will not only change the image of Kota Kinabalu as the main entry point to Sabah but more importantly as a symbol of transformation of Sabah's development from being lagged far behind due to political conflicts," he said.

All people should be proactive in realising this development agenda planned by the government for the benefit of the people and "not by diverting it, let alone going against it for any excuse," he said

Fokus Jadi Sdn Bhd director Salman Nurillah said: "If there are difficulties that need to be resolved, there are ways to channel views and find the best solution.

"Emotions should not be let to rule. The interests of a few should not stand in the way of national interest."

"We need to look at the airport expansion project in a wider and comprehensive perspective because it is a national interest project," he said.

Salman said the government should not backtrack because doing so would not benefit the people.

The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) has found that the state government had acted reasonably when it decided to relocate half of over 2,000 Sri Tanjung squatters in Putatan to an area near Kampung Maang, Penampang to make way for the airport expansion project.

Suhakam commissioner Datuk Prof Hamdan Adnan yesterday said the area near Kampung Maang would clearly be used as a resettlement area and the land aquisition by the government should not be disputed.

On the protest by Kampung Maang residents over the relocation, Prof Hamdan said they had the right to voice their concern but the issue they had raised on the presence of illegal immigrants in the Sri Tanjung squatter area was a separate one that would be tackled by the authorities inclding the police and Registration Department.

"The Sabah government has given its assurance that only local citizens will move to the area near Kampung Maang, so there is nothing to be worried about," he said.

-- BERNAMA

KE may fly in more B744 in future :)

Btw, does BKI really need a new LCCT ?
