MAS union cries out for new management

Recommended Posts

The Malaysia Airlines System Employees Union (Maseu) has called on the government to intervene in the administration of Malaysia Airlines System (MAS) by appointing new leaders in the airline industry to head the national airline.

Maseu executive secretary Mohd Jabarullah Abdul Kadir said various internal problems, including the huge loss of RM2.52 billion suffered by MAS in 2011, have damaged the reputation of the country's pioneer airline.

"As a union under MAS, we are worried and cannot bear to see this development," he told a media conference at Maseu office in Subang Jaya, Petaling Jaya today.

He said many parties unclear of the crisis weighing on MAS have blamed its employees and the union for all the problems, including financial losses.

"We want a management which can put up the best strategy for MAS...as it is now, we do not see anything major in MAS. As such, MAS needs to get a knowledgeable leadership in the business," said Mohd Jabarullah.

Meanwhile, Maseu secretary-general Ab Malek Ariff said the union, which represents 15,000 MAS employees, appealed to the government to give serious attention to the issue of appointing a new management.

The MAS management issue cropped up when there were talks of merging the company with low-cost carrier AirAsia, but the move was cancelled following protest by various parties. – Bernama, July 18, 2013

What is MAS direction? Internationally, MAS is far behind Singapore, Emirates, Etihad and Cathay. Even Garuda is ahead of MAS now. Domestically, not only MAS has to compete with Air Asia but now with Malindo.

The issues which raised the dissatisfaction (2.5 billion losses in 2011 and share swap) were ages ago. Does the Union head has any idea that lots of thing have happened ever since? Did he get trapped in a time machine or something?

We always wanted to keep the Government away from MH but these folks instead want the Government to intervene with MH affairs.

They did not like it when MH had "knowledgeable leadership in the business", they cried foul. Now they are crying foul again. Yes, the govt. should leave it to the current management to sort itself out.

As many politicians from the ruling party kept reminding Malaysians, "if you don't like it here, you can leave..." MH union leaders should advise their members to do that! :)

MASEU likes to portray themselves as representing the entire MAS workforce when in reality they only represent graded staff members (graded staff meaning those with Diploma/Cert & below).

They really should change the name to MASGEU to avoid misleading the public.

Yes. The workers have the right to know what is happening to the airline. They have the right to know whether the Management is really working towards the betterment of the airline or they are just sitting on their butts and waiting for some political puppet-masters to pull the strings.

The Management owed it to the workers to ensure that the airline is profitable and therefore be able to continue to provide work security and benefits to the workers.

Workers have done their part (whether enough or not), and now the Management have to deliver their end of the bargain.

The mere facts that the workers themselves asked for intervention is proof that the presence MAS administration is not doing enough to turn the airline around. When the workers are more worried than the Management, this goes to show how severly poor the Management team is doing.

Kudos to the workers..!

Or shall I say, MASEU represents the graded staff, which excludes executives, managements as well as professionals such as pilots, engineers etc., all of which got their own associations (but not unions. Something about Malaysian Labor Law). Cabin crew are still pert of MASEU, but I think they should be forming their own union / association soon.

MASEU is just like some political party, where the head is nowhere like the most of the members.

Radzi,

MAS engineers up to lead engineers are graded staff. Supts or controllers are executives.

Bear in mind MASEU and MESA are unions affliated to MTUC.

But what surprised me is that the executive secretary of MASEU was once a manager in HR. He retired last year.

Perhaps a senior management who is close to MASEU wants to grab the CEO position since AJ's contract is due in September.

Mystery unfold. From the MH Rumour Department:

Why not? FELDA got it recently.

I think AJ is doing a reasonably good job so far. He's managed to reduce losses and is just starting to strengthen the MH network. I hope he stays on. MH does not need ANOTHER change of management.

So, apparently MASEU's anger towards management was because they let the flight attendants create a new union - NUFAM

Today, Maseu isn't what it used to be. Or the employees are the militant ones, harder to please. In an unprecedented referendum by way of secret balloting organized by the Ministry of Human Resources last week, flight attendants with the national airline voted to find out if the majority wanted Maseu or a newly-registered National Union of Flight Attendants Malaysia or Nufam. The outcome had been expected: they voted out Maseu.

And of course - allegations of NUFAM being an agent for Tony Fernandes to destroy the airline: http://jebatmustdie.wordpress.com/2013/01/02/tussle-between-two-mas-unions/

Seriously, the story of MAS is worthy of a drama series.

They could probably do it in a style that reminisce The Bourne Identity minus the action though.
