Perak plans new airport at Batang Padang

IPOH (Oct 8, 2008) : The state government plans to build a new international airport in Batang Padang district, near Tapah, to attract more major foreign investments to Perak.

Sultan Azlan Shah Airport here has become a white elephant over the years with practically no flights in and out of the airport, and calls have been made by the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) to reopen and upgrade the airport for commercial flights.

The FMM felt that it was difficult to attract investments to the state without proper air logistics and, because of this, many foreign investors are moving to the other states.

Last year, the previous Barisan Nasional state government had entrusted the FMM to carry out a survey and provide feedback on whether the airport should be upgraded or a new one built at Seri Iskandar, 40km southwest of here.

However, the present Pakatan Rakyat state government has decided to build the new international airport in Batang Padang.

The complex will occupy about 1,600 ha, Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said today.

"We are discussing with AirAsia and Firefly the proposal to build a low-cost carrier terminal in Batang Padang and we hope to tie up the deal soon," he told reporters after a courtesy call by Japanese ambassador Masahiko Horie and his wife Yoko Horie, at his office here.

The state government will provide the land with one of the two carriers undertaking a mixed development construction project there.

Nijar said the state hoped to attract major Japanese investments with the construction of the new international airport, to be complemented by the commissioning of the 160km Ipoh- Rawang double-tracking rail project, which will help transport more goods from the Ipoh cargo terminal to Kuala Lumpur and vice-versa.

He said Horie was pleased with the "business-friendly and transparent policies" of the Pakatan Rakyat state government.

Ipoh and Fukuoka City in Japan were made sister city in 1988 and this has worked to the advantage of Perak, which will promote education and tourism in Fukuoka and other Japanese cities.

There are plans also to twin Fukuoka University with a university here in the near future.

Then, there'll be 3 international airports in the North alone. LGK, PEN and this new one... *gasp*

.. and all 3 are under the opposition ruled states... whoops..! lets not venture into that area, shall we? hehe...

Might as well build another one in Gerik!

BTW, if they have to build one, in my not so humble opinion, Seri Iskandar is better suited and strategically located.

The airstrip in Gerik belongs to the military (MINDEF/KEMENTAH)

Agree, different costumes. And as user, we should be changing costumes every now and then, so the one we're not wearing now can be send to the laundry to be cleaned and refreshed.

Oops, sorry. Getting O/T.

Hopefully someone will do a feasability study on any new airport project planned.

Might as well build one airport at every parliamentary constituencies. then remove all roads especially the tolled highways. Let the people commute by microplanes or helicopters. thus create higher demand for air travel and the airport wont be white elephant. Let PROTON, Perodua or Naza be our national plane maker instead of car maker.

It is as absurd as the "Perak plans new airport at Batang Padang. huhu

On the topics.

What makes JALCargo willing to fly to this Batang Padang when they already flying into KUL. They are not even flying to PEN. Or is it the main purpose of this planned airport is to be JALCargo Hub?

Federal Govt urged to develop Ipoh airport

IPOH: Perak is urging the Federal Government to fulfil its promise to improve and expand the under-used Sultan Azlan Shah Airport here.

State Education, Local Government, Housing and Public Transport Committee chairman Nga Kor Ming said the development plan was a promise made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Nga insisted that Abdullah had pledged it during a trade exposition opening here in June last year.

“A promise is a promise, and the Federal Government should fulfil its duties to allocate the funds for the development as soon as possible,” Nga told a press conference here on Friday.

He said the airport upgrades and extension of the runway would cost about RM170mil, which should be borne by the Federal Government.

“Otherwise, give us the authority and we are ready to do it if the Government is incapable of developing the airport,” he said.

The Pakatan Rakyat state government, said Nga, would find the means to develop the airport and would also consider having it privately financed.

Nga said he had brought up the matter in Parliament but it was shot down by Transport Minister Datuk Ong Tee Keat.

“Instead, he announced that the ministry had plans to build an airport in Negri Sembilan, which is not reasonable,” he said, adding that the Kuala Lumpur International Airport and the Low Cost Carrier Terminal were about 25km from Nilai.

Nga also called on the Government to get Firefly, a subsidiary of Malaysia Airlines, to offer its services here.

Perak lacked an efficient airline cargo system and was losing out on foreign investments, said Nga who noted that representatives from India, Australia, Britain and Japan had expressed interest.

MB: Airport in Ipoh can be expanded

IPOH: There is enough space for the Sultan Azlan Shah airport here to be expanded, Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said.

He said proposals from various quarters confirmed the runway could be lengthened to have just enough space for a Boeing 747.

With that portion, we will extend the runway so that 747s can land,” he told reporters after meeting mosque officials here yesterday.

On Friday, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat had said the airport runway could not be extended due to a lack of space, citing the surrounding mountains and densely populated residential areas.

Nizar also said the Pakatan Rakyat state government was looking into the possibility of subsidising 10% to 30% of the airfares for the airlines to fly to Ipoh.

“We are negotiating with local and international airlines,” he added.

Believe it make more sense and cheaper for Perak gomen to start a regional airline with turboprop (Jetstream 31/41, EMB120 ) providing regular (e.g. hourly) service between IPH and KUL, JHB, PEN, MES.

If small turboprop operation can’t breakeven neither will larger turbofan.

Wow.

And this is what people voted for last elections.

Whichever side they're on, politicians will always be politicians. I'm very sure if the previous government were reelected they will still be asking for the IPH airport extension. Each side trying to be more silly than the other, and we the taxpayers will have to pay for that.

Maybe FY can consider operating some flights to IPH. That could work. But not from SZB.
