Fernandes: Illogical to move us to KKIA

Recommended Posts

AK should just pass on the additional cost of airport tax and operations .....

Should have done that from day one, instead of staging this protracted, on-going drama scene

I can understand the PR positives that can be gleaned from seemingly 'fighting' for rakyat's wallets and benefit and all - but when it get recycled over and over, there comes a time when it gets overcooked and the trusted recipe works no more at best, counter productive even

:)

Pros

1) More check-in counters.

I believe there are many more counters available at T2 should AK choose to activate them, but that would be additional cost no doubt

Cons

3) AirAsia may expand operations faster than terminal can cope (probably think that airport management slow to expand terminal)

Is the AK group able to expand as rapidly as what their spin masters would have us believe ? I think not, when they have gone back to Airbus requesting for deferred aircraft deliveries Edited by BC Tam

T2 is at breaking point. At least at KUL LCCT before this you can still find a place to sit down at the gates even during peak hour. At T2, you're lucky to even get a wall to yourself. You even have to brave the elements outside to queue for immigration clearance

Well don't expect it to get any better at BKI T2 anytime soon, not when the landlord is trying to evict the tenant :)

AirAsia Must Relocate From KKIA's 'Land-locked' Terminal 2, Says MAHB

September 16, 2015 23:53 PM

KOTA KINABALU, Sept 16 (Bernama) -- Low-cost carrier, AirAsia, has to relocate its operations to Terminal 1 of the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) from its current location at Terminal 2.

Malaysia Airports Holding Bhd (MAHB) Managing Director Datuk Badlisham Ghazali said this was because Terminal 2 no longer had room for expansion.

"It is a 'land-locked' area, which means there is no more space to expand the terminal, left or right," he told reporters after the official opening of KKIA's Terminal 1 here Wednesday.

Terminal 1 was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak who, in his speech, said that traffic at Terminal 2 was congested with the increased number of passengers arriving at the terminal.

Badlisham said as part of the synergy for the airport's operation, Terminal 2 would be converted for cargo operations as well as general aviation.

"A lot of people want to use that space (Terminal 2) not only for cargo operations but also for private planes that need parking facilities.

"There is only nine aircraft parking bays at Terminal 2 while here (Terminal 1) there are 25," he said, adding that parking bays at Terminal 1 would be increased by another 16.

Therefore, commercial airline operators should also maximise the usage of Terminal 2 for other economic benefits.

"So, we hope the Transport Ministry will issue a firm instruction for all airlines to relocate and use the facilities provided at Terminal 1," he said.

Badlisham also said there was a masterplan to look into expanding KKIA to accommodate 16 million passengers, annually, from nine million currently.

"This has been in discussion with the Sabah state government for many years and our stand is that it is better to have an integrated terminal for both full service and low-cost carriers.

"It is about connectivity and will draw even more passengers come into a hub like Sabah," he said.

Badlisham said MAHB would also provide RM10 million to Sabah Tourism Board to aggressively carry out marketing and promotional activities together with airline companies.

AirAsia to move to terminal two by year end – Liow
September 21, 2015, Monday
KOTA KINABALU: The Transport Ministry is looking into the arrangements to transfer the operation of low-cost carrier AirAsia Berhad from Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) Terminal 2 (T2) to T1.
...
As for the AirAsia’s response on the move, he said the airline had come up with proposals which the ministry was looking into, which included incentives.

AirAsia Bhd will shift its operations to Terminal 1 of the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) next month, ending a two-year resistance to move to the RM1.7 billion complex.

People familiar with the development said the budget carrier is now negotiating with Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) on office and commercial space rentals before the move, expected to happen by the end of October.

The Transport Ministry had to intervene and expedite AirAsia’s move to Terminal 1 due to the frosty relationship between AirAsia and MAHB.

“AirAsia had submitted some proposals to the Transport Ministry which include the airline building a low-cost carrier (LCC) terminal at the current Terminal 2 location.

“While all the proposals are being scrutinised, the announcement by the prime minister (PM) shuts all doors to the airline except to move back,” the source told The Malaysian Reserve.

Last week, PM Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Razak urged the LCC to move to the new terminal immediately.

Najib said AirAsia had exceeded the deadline.

The move is also crucial as the present Terminal 2 would be converted into a cargo hub.

However, it is believed that the airline has submitted a fresh proposal which contains a set of rules if they move to the upgraded Terminal 1.

The move is inevitable as Terminal 2 could not cater to the high number of passengers.

Built to cater for two million passengers per annum, the terminal saw 3.6 million passengers passing through its gates last year.

AirAsia was instructed to move to Terminal 1 in 2011, but had delayed the shift, citing cost and terminal constraints as the main reason.

However, MAHB gave a final deadline of Aug 1, for the airline to move but was ignored by AirAsia.

The LCC claimed that Terminal 1 would not be able to accommodate its future aircraft expansion plans including to bring its affiliate company, AirAsia X to Kota Kinabalu and make the airport its hub.

The South-East Asia’s largest LCC also said the higher operations costs at Terminal 1 will trickle down to its passengers.

AirAsia currently flies 518 flights to 10 international and eight domestic destinations.

Last year, Chinese nationals were the airline’s largest passenger load to Sabah at about 159,000, followed by Hong Kong, Taiwan and Indonesia.

The Terminal 1, built at a cost of RM1.7 billion, handled 3.19 million passengers last year.

Presently, 14 airlines are operating from the terminal which has 64 counters to service domestic and international flights.

Only 10 days before the supposed relocation. But i cant find any announcement on AK website about this. strange...

I have the same question as I have a flight on 1/11/15. No statement whatsoever by AirAsia regarding any change of terminal.

I twitted to askairasia Twitter and their reply is they will be at terminal 2 on 1/11/15. They are staying put until their demand is met it seems. Nothing is changing.

Earlier this month, I had a brief chat with a security officer stationed at the baggage scanner (his colleague manned the scanner, he was resting a while so, I had the brief opportunity) near check-in island D/E which is reserved for AirAsia group. I asked him whether he saw any AirAsia staffs at the reserved counters in preparation for moving there. He didn't saw any, and doubt AK will make the move by 1st Nov. But, it is still 10 days to go, let's see how it turns out.

AirAsia’s shift to Terminal 1 neither right nor wrong – Masidi

November 26, 2015, Thursday

LIKAS assemblyman Junz Wong claimed in the State Assembly yesterday that AirAsia’s relocation to Terminal 1 of the Kota Kinabalu International Airport on December 1 will most likely cause heavy car traffic jam as well as air traffic.

However, Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Masidi Manjun stressed that the shift to Terminal 1 was neither the right move nor a wrong one.

“But people are already queuing up right to the airplane (at Terminal 2) … if you are saying that more will be affected by the move, actually, people are already complaining (even before the move),” he said.

He urged Junz to consider the situation.

“Over RM1 million was spent for the upgrade of Terminal 1 and only 15 percent of the airport has been used. This does not make financial sense to not move there,” he said.

Masidi added that it was not fair for Junz to make prediction prior to the move, particularly when it was all about negativism.

He also said his ministry had met with the airlines operating and that included AirAsia.

“The move will not affect them,” he said.

The minister said also he had met with AirAsia chief executive officer Aireen Omar who said they would move to Terminal 1.

I think it's most telling that there is absolutely nothing on AK's site about a migration to BKI T1 :D

Gosh, you can already sense the upcoming drama performance from you know who ! :)
