D7 up STN from daily to 9 weekly!

Azran Osman-Rani

We're adding two more flights to London (from 7x to 9x weekly) from July 2010. Grab low fares when the extra flights go on sale tonight - Grab summer and Christmas holiday flights now (extra flights leaving Monday and Friday from KL, Tue and Sat from London)

TPE is also 9X weekly. So these routes are performing whereas those that are not are chopped. Azran did mention that they want to do double daily on STN but will only be able to do so if they manage to find another A343 to lease at a cheap rate.

Never thought that such thing exist. Friendly football match between an airline and an airport with some lucky spectators will be given free tickets to the Gold Coast.

Azran Osman-Rani

Come celebrate the best airline-airport partnership with us. Come to the 2nd annual football game btw Gold Coast Airport and AirAsia X, saturday 8pm 6 March. Club Aman field (behind Ampang Park). Come to the game and if you predict the match score correctly, you win free tickets to Gold Coast!

My bet of the final score: D7 3 - OOL 2.

Azran is flabbergasted!

Oh please. MAS crying to govt to prevent us fr flying to Sydney bcos of 'A380 baggage'. Yes SQ, EK see A380 as asset.

if they really strive the best, why afraid to compete with AAX? Why cry to govt? Their competition is SQ, EK, TG, CX...

pray tell what other baggage or shortcoming that MAS has. I bet their emotional points that they haven't thought of solutions

New Economic Model identifies 'infrastructure' as 1 of 4 key strengths, incl aviation transport. Shouldn't M'sia then address the big gaps?

I just wish I could 'touch' his soul so that he could reveal more of the happenings to the public LOL!

I think Azran and Tony are more open than most other CEOs. You seldom find Malaysian CEOs who write their own blogs and are constantly on Twitter!

Anyway, it looks like MH is really afraid of D7 competition on the SYD route. BTW, D7 will be getting more new A333s this year: XXF in June, XXG July, XXH Nov. Wonder where these planes will now fly to...

AirAsia X blocked from Sydney because MAS demanded protection, on grounds that they were 'forced to buy A380. SQ uses it too!

Minister Idris is the one demanding MAS be protected on Sydney. So how? Consumers and Economy not important as MAS.

Data proves Msians increasingly flying to Syd via Singapore, where there are 52 weekly flights, vs only 12 from KUL. Leakage!

Within MH's network, SYD is not as strong as it was before. And unfortunately, this destination has been earmarked since the very beginning to be one of the A380 destination, hence a non-compromised need to protect it from becoming like MEL (where D7 and EK compete with MH on level playing field on that route). The Middle Eastern airlines also have been responsible in deteriorating MH's market share in the Kangaroo Route. Now MH has 7 weekly B744 and 5 weekly B772 flights (that go to BNE first before continuing on to KUL on the inbound journey). That is bad as the destination can't barely support 2 daily flights.

I agree about his claim that most passengers prefer to go to Australia and vice versa via Singapore. This recent survey supports it.

I would like to share this Australia-based survey. http://www.choice.com.au/Reviews-and-Tests/Travel-and-Transport/Travel/Airline-travel/Airline-satisfaction-survey/Page/International%20airline%20survey.aspx

Australians ranked MH:

- 7th for flights from Australia to the UK

- 2nd for flights from Australia to Italy

- 2nd for flights from Australia to Malaysia (SQ was voted 1st, D7 4th)

- 2nd for flights from Australia to Vietnam

MH was not preferred for flights from Australia to Bali/Indonesia and Thailand, where D7 was ranked 2nd and 3rd respectively.

SQ is the preferred airline from Australia to Malaysia! Isn't that shocking? Passengers (Australians) are willing to spend more time transiting in SIN rather than flying direct to Malaysia with MH. So leakage as Azran claimed does happened.

I think Azran and Tony are more open than most other CEOs. You seldom find Malaysian CEOs who write their own blogs and are constantly on Twitter!

Spot on. They are the 'new age' CEOs versus the old school Tok Kadok type CEOs, which head most GLCs in Malaysia some of whom can't even speak good English and IT illiterate, dare I say. Heck, even some of our Ministers (or ex-Ministers) can't speak good English and IT illiterate LOL.

I think ICN might be released from the blockage not too far in the future. SYD looks doomed for D7 until MH started their A380 service there. Adding salt to D7's wound, it is rumoured that MH's A380 might be delayed from its first scheduled delivery date of August 2011.

According to SQ, A380 operating cost is only about 3% higher than 744 means A380 is justify on any profitable 744 route. The reason why gomen is protecting MH could mean KUL/SYD and KUL/SEL is only marginally profitable for MH.

In the last few years, MH has been losing market share to SQ, EK, EY, QF, BA, VS, etc on kangaroo route. Instead of protecting MH, believe the gomen should permit D7 to crawl back market share for the country.

The Star picked up Azran's Twitter discussions and wrote a piece here: http://biz.thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2010/4/3/business/5988613&sec=business

Basically it confirms that MH is not prepared to co-operate for the good of Malaysia as a whole, not like what SQ is doing with its LCC Tiger. MH is saying that D7 is free to fly anywhere they like except to destinations where MH is serving! That statement implies MH fears that D7 will take their market share. However, it has been proven that wherever AK and D7 flies (except maybe to Abu Dhabi), it creates its own market. Most of the AK/D7 pax will not be flying if they are not able to get low fares.

That's what happen when MAS is trying to keep up with their prestige whilst still under government backing...its not the same for SQ and EK.

Let hear what another side of coin said....

MAS senior general manager network and revenue management Amin Khan responded to Azran’s allegations via e-mail, saying “it is somewhat intriguing that AAX has been making these statements in Malaysia, and outside the country.

“We believe that both airlines can compete and collaborate, and we believe that is what the Government wants us to do when they had set out the vision of wanting to build two strong national champions.’’

Azran claims that the airline has managed to bring in a lot more tourists despite flying to peripheral routes.

“We have been told a number of nonsensical things like we are flying transit traffic and not bringing in the tourists.

“Why don’t they measure everything, all the data is on the Tourism Malaysia website.

“Just to cite an example, had we not flown to Australia in 2009, would the tourist arrivals from Australia surged by 25% since the incumbent did not add capacity during that period?’’

“The sad part is that our policy makers are not given a full set of facts to make good policy decisions and that is the kind of baseless arguments that have been levelled against us.

“We welcome an opportunity to address the issues instead of being held back and not being able to present our case fully,’’ he said.

Khan has pointed out that “AAX can fly to many routes that are currently not served.

For example, there are no direct services from KL to Manchester, Zurich, Madrid, Athens, Oslo, Vienna, Amman, Cairo, Pusan, Fukuoka, Nagoya, Nice and Oakland.”

“This in itself will give customers better choices.

“We believe that AAX has requested and received approvals for many of these routes but they have not offered these services,’’ he added.

Khan said “we are currently competing on a number of routes, and at the same time, we also continue to fly on routes where we are not necessarily making money to provide customers with choices, and to attract tourists.’’

Not a good example of destinations by the way, because some of the destinations stated there were proven no no in business perspective...

Emm why not Pusan instead Seoul??emmm

Really feel for Azran at airasia x. We at airasia had 8 years of this. How can a goverment owned airline deny a private airline the chance to grow. The prime minister is trying to change malaysia but companies like MAS still want to carry on its old ways. they should help the PM who is a good man to change.

As long as the affected pax find their service useful, then they have done their job.

If we really want to condemn AK and/or D7, then we should also condemn those hotels, car hire companies, taxis and other travel operators who charge exorbitant prices for their products.

There is an online petition in Facebook - Petition for AirAsia flights from Kuala Lumpur to Adelaide! - and this is what Azran told them.

Azran Osman-Rani

Thanks for the show of support. Officially, AirAsia X would love to start flying to Adelaide. We have been invited by Adelaide Airport and South Australian Government. There are available rights under the Malaysia-Australia bilateral agreement.

The ONLY factor holding us back is approval from Malaysian Government. They dont want us to fly on same routes as MAS, to protect MAS, despite data showing that we have grown Melbourne and Perth where we are allowed to do so. Please direct your petition to Prime Minister's Dato Sri Najib's facebook page. The decision is now with him.

The petition is now has gained 1,397 supports.
