LAN chile - :good:

Was thinking of redeeming miles on either QF/BA MEL-SYD-JNB-CPT or LAN to SCL/EZE, but LAN's J seats look too uncomfy for such a long flight [sYD-(AKL)-SCL-EZE]. IIRC their new seats aren't coming to Australia anytime soon since they won't be on the 343 and I think it's the only plane in their fleet that can make such a long flight. :(

Oh well...

Don't they still exist? As Jetconnect, but still flying as a QF franchise?

Not really. Jetconnect is a QF subsidiary I believe.

Qantas New Zealand existed briefly (about a year or so). It was the same owner of the franchise Ansett New Zealand. When Ansett Australia went bust, the Ansett NZ guys went to negotiate with QF for a franchise instead as keeping the Ansett franchise would not work for them obviously. So we had the Qantas NZ briefly before it went on the same fate as Ansett Aussie.

Realising that the QF franchise did not do well, QF stepped in to set up Jetconnect. Unlike QF NZ who used the same a/c as Ansett NZ, Jetconnect uses Qantas 733 and 734

Ahh... they also operate some of the transtasman flights IIRC, in conjunction with mainline QF. Here's hoping they don't get replaced by JQ...

My friend Rob [who you met in AKL] complains about Jetconnect all the time - very unpredictable operations apparently and bad schedules.

Not sure about the trans-Tasman flights, as a lot of them are operated by QF Aussie's 738 (from Wellington), 763 and 744 from AKL. Not sure about from Christchurch and Queenstown however. Yes, QF's Jetconnect have very unpredictable schedules and often running late. Same case with Air NZ's domestic operations. When you compare a bad apple with another bad apple, I guess we have nothing much to complain about ;) Jetconnect could cancel some flights (domestic) if they don't have enough pax numbers!

Rumour from my friend, Richard Allen (also a member here) that JQ will replace Jetconnect in NZ's domestic opts soon!

i've flown LAN on both 343 and 762, in J class and i can say they are blooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooody good. although the ptv's are quite small and the seats dated, their service, food, loungs and SCL is still top notch. worth a try, you will be back for more.

Yes I know their service is good - but you can't take the hard product out of the equation. It's like buying a car and asking for recommendations on the best car buying 'experience' and then saying "oh but I don't care about the actual car." For a shorter flight, I'd be inclined to try LA but SYD-AKL-EZE is an awfully long flight and I'd need at least angled flat seats. The TG 773 seating on MEL-BKK back in Dec (a much shorter segment) which is similar and what I call 'glorified Y' was bad enough...*shudders* For a long haul red eye I'd need a good sleep. Pity SCL-SYD is a red eye, because SYD-SCL is a daylight service.

Same reason why I went for BA J over QF J on SIN-LHR even though I normally prefer QF service by heaps.

YMMV of course.

Well so long as they don't replace the transtasman ops as well. The transtasman flights are good for using on RTW tickets for mileage runs!! Since JQ isn't oneworld, they can't be used on the oneworld explorer product. :(

And yes Jetconnect does operate several transtasmans. My WLG-SYD flight is showing 'Operated by Jetconnect for Qantas.'

I left out one of mine - Qantaslink!

I usually get a Dash 8 on MEL-CBR-MEL if i get the Qantaslink flights instead of mainline Qantas. All Y config but the seats have so much personal space and much more comfy than J on the 734! Takes less time to prepare for take off too. :good:
