Never been there, so any tips, maps, suggestions are welcome! Does anyone know how the spotting conditions are from the "Concorde Inn"?

RobK 0 Report post Posted February 8, 2011 Maybe of interest to KUL spotters, just heard MEM4092 on HF with Singapore, reporting OLKIT which is just off the Brunei coast. Flight gave routing as Brunei to KUL. MEM is Meridian Airlines of the Ukraine, so probably an Antonov of some description. Usually takes about 1:30 from OLKIT to KUL airport so 1330-1500 local I expect it to arrive, depending on what speed it's flying at.

Walter Sim 1 Report post Posted February 11, 2011 Derice, I would say the safest spot would be to spot from the observation deck in the main terminal building
Norman 1 Report post Posted February 12, 2011 Anyone willing to awnser my question? I'll be there in a few days. Sorry to miss your posting, Derice... Welcome to MWings... As Walter mentioned, safest to spot from Observation Deck in Main Terminal Building... Not sure which 16 hours you'll be in KUL... Obs Deck closes at midnight till morning. You need very powerful binoculars to spot from Concorde Inn, and only for aircraft departing 32R, and already airborne, or arrival 14L... You can't see the runway from there. Best is still Obs Deck, for the short duration you'll be in KUL...
Derice Bannock 0 Report post Posted February 14, 2011 Hi Norman & Walter, Thanks for your replies! I'll certainly try the observation deck. But I'd love to catch some birds landing/departing as well. I've got a 100-400L on my 7D, so should be okay to cross some distance. I will arrive with a morning flight from Amsterdam, and will depart on an evening flight to Auckland. So I think i'll have most of the daylight at my disposal. (If I can keep my eyes open). I'm willing to walk / take taxi somewhere as well, for example to the 32R/14L runway. I noticed on Google Maps that there is a road leading up to the runway: http://maps.google.nl/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=nl&geocode=&q=2.769235,+101.702113&aq=&sll=52.469397,5.509644&sspn=5.897627,6.855469&ie=UTF8&ll=2.768024,101.699592&spn=0.009441,0.006695&t=h&z=17 Is it allowed to go/spot there? Don't want any issues with the police or anything. Regards, Derice.
Keith Ng 0 Report post Posted February 14, 2011 Is it allowed to go/spot there? Don't want any issues with the police or anything. Regards, Derice. Since you do no want to have issues with the police, Observation Deck would be the safest spot.
Norman 1 Report post Posted February 14, 2011 Sorry Derice... I can't get the google map coord as you posted... However.. there's no public-access road that can lead you directly to 32R/14L part from the road that lead to the 'now-no-entry' Observation Hill... The perimeter road that running parallel to 32L/14R has also been closed to all traffic for construction of new LCC Terminal. AND... spotting by the fence will always invite the police... So as Keith mentioned... safest is the Observation Deck in the terminal... Even that... please have your passport/identity with you all the time. There have been an incident where spotters from Hungary were questioned by security personnel for taking photographs in the Obs Deck.. for few hours... So have your passport, sample spotting photos, flight tickets so that they know you're a spotter, and taking airplane photograph is your hobby, and you're on transit in KUL... Good luck.... btw... may I know when you'll be in KUL?
