Airbus A330 Neo - AirAsia X Orders 50 A330-900neo at Farnborough Air Show 2014

Recommended Posts

Airbus has given its strongest signal yet that it will seek to overturn Boeing’s dominant position in the lucrative long-range passenger jet market by embarking on a major overhaul of its popular A330 aircraft.
In an interview with the Financial Times ahead of this month’s Farnborough air show, Fabrice Brégier, chief executive of Airbus’ passenger jet business, said the probability was “growing every day” that the company would launch an A330 with more fuel-efficient engines.
Mr Brégier said Airbus is studying “significant” modification of the A330’s wings, not just to accommodate the new engines – which would be heavier compared to existing ones – but to improve the aircraft’s aerodynamics and therefore help further reduce fuel burn.

If it aint broke, dont fix.

Though a330 neo wont offer much technological leap compared to its rival 787, i believe the major selling points will be their low price and abundance of spare parts availability considering its a more than a decade old aircraft.

Plus, slot availability. Shorter waiting time compared to A350 and 787.

It's also a tried and tested aircraft. Airlines need not worry about the entire fleet being grounded due to faulty batteries :p

Yes, I think that this is always in the mind of fleet planners. No matter how good an aircraft is, it isn't any good if it is grounded!

Financial Times of UK is reporting the following, as per Fabrice's comment:

  • Significant modification to the wing
  • Wing will not be composite
  • Fuel burn "probably identical" to competition
  • Aircraft will be cheaper than the 787
  • Bregier says over 1000 frames possible
  • "If there are opportunities to incrementally improve the performance of our products without huge costs to the group and customers want them, why should be say No?"

The adage "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" simply stunts innovation & doesn't move humanity forwards. Explains why we don't go to the moon or have an operating supersonic airliner any more.

It's all about money money money (not that the money saved is used for good like solving world hunger or ending wars anyhow!)

Airbus says 'jury still out' on A330neo airshow launch

Airbus Group has not decided whether it will launch its proposed A330neo jet at this month's Farnborough Airshow but is confident about the outlook for plane orders at the gala event, its strategy chief Marwan Lahoud said on Saturday.
Airbus has drawn up plans to revamp its biggest-selling wide-body passenger jet to preserve a second front in its competition with the delayed Boeing 787 Dreamliner in addition to the new A350.
Lahoud said "the jury is still out" on whether the A330neo, a more efficient version of the 20-year-old A330 jet, would be launched at the July 14-20 airshow.

Airbus to launch rebranded A330-800/900neo: sources

European planemaker Airbus will both revamp and rebrand its A330 passenger jet at a launch expected to kick off next week's Farnborough Airshow, people familiar with the matter said on Friday.

The A330-800neo and A330-900neo will be upgraded versions of the A330-200 and A330-300 respectively and include some cabin improvements and 400 nautical miles more range, while Airbus will also study ways of improving the use of floor space.
As reported by Reuters in June, next week's announcement will highlight at least 14 percent greater fuel efficiency and a new version of the Rolls-Royce Trent engine, but will also accelerate the end of the poor-selling A350-800.
Airbus declined to comment.
"We do not comment on the usual air show noise," a spokesman said.

A350-800 isn't optimised - just a straight shrink of the A350-900. As such it is carrying a little excess weight and the economics do not look as good as that of the A350-900 and A350-1000. That was why many airlines cancelled their orders or swapped to the A350-900.

Airbus had to decide if the money was better spent re-engining the A330 or to optimise the A350-800. The biggest factor going for the A330neo is that it will be available by 2017 whilst the A350-800 will take longer (after the A350-1000). By then customers might have already ordered and received competitors' products.

Adds new members to its market-leading Widebody Family

14 JULY 2014 PRESS RELEASE

Following a decision by the Board of Directors of the Group, Airbus has launched the A330-800neo and A330-900neo, two new members of its Widebody Family, which will incorporate latest generation Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, aerodynamic enhancements and new cabin features. Benefitting from the unbeatable economics, versatility and high reliability of the A330, the A330neo reduces fuel consumption by 14% per seat, making it the most cost efficient, medium range Widebody aircraft on the market. In addition to greater fuel savings, A330neo operators will benefit from a range increase of up to 400 nautical miles and all the operational commonality advantages of the Airbus Family. Deliveries of the A330neo will start in Q4 2017.

“The A330 is a very important margin contributor for our Group. It’s also one of the most reliable and efficient commercial aircraft ever. Customers love it. With our decision to re-engine the plane, we will keep the A330 flying high for many more years to come. The development costs for the A330neo will be incurred from 2015 to 2017 with an impact of around -70 basis points on Airbus Group’s 2015 Return on Sales target. However, we have a very good business case and the A330neo, once in service, will continue to significantly contribute to our group’s earnings,” said Tom Enders, CEO of Airbus Group.

“The A330neo is the logical evolution of our reliable and versatile A330 Family. It provides an optimal solution for airlines around the world looking to minimise their fuel and operating costs while offering best-in-class comfort to their passengers,” said Fabrice Brégier, Airbus President and CEO. “We see strong market potential for the A330neo, and like its market-leading smaller sister, the A320neo, we are confident this new aircraft will be a success in the medium-haul segment. We are again leveraging a proven aircraft with a wide operator base and making it even more efficient with the latest innovations and technology developments.”

In addition to the new Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, the A330neo will feature incremental innovations, including aerodynamic enhancements such as new A350 XWB inspired winglets, an increased wing span and new engine pylons. Pilots will benefit from latest generation cockpit systems, and the already very comfortable A330 cabin will be further optimised to offer up to ten additional 18 inch wide seats. Passengers are winners too, as they will be able to enjoy a 21st century on-board experience with for example, fourth generation In Flight Entertainment (3D films), mood-lighting and full connectivity.

I would say that the previous order for 25 A333s last December will be converted to the A339neo.

They might add another 5-10 more because they will probably need replacements once the leases (for 9M-XAA to XAD) runs out. They might also retire the older frames (e.g. 9M-XXA, etc.)

They can throw the MOU with GE signed in April 2014 (during Obama's visit) in the waste paper basket! ;)

How likely will MH order the A330NEO for B772 replacement ? Has it got the range that MH wants ?

The A339neo looks ideal for them as it will be available early (in the 3 year time frame of their B772 retirements) and it would be wise if they ordered it.

MH is now fighting fires - so they might not be in the position to place the order! :(

Airbus selects Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 as exclusive engine for the A330neo

Monday, 14 July 2014

Rolls-Royce today announced that Airbus has selected its new Trent 7000 as the exclusive engine for the new Airbus A330neo.
The Trent 7000, launched today, is the seventh member of the Trent engine family. Over the last 19 years, Rolls-Royce Trent engines have accumulated more than 75 million flight hours. The majority of modern widebody aircraft, either in service or on order, are powered by Trent engines.
The new Trent 7000 engine brings together:
Experience from the Trent 700 - the engine of choice for the current A330
Architecture from the Trent 1000-TEN - the latest version of the Trent 1000 engine
Latest technology from the Trent XWB - the world's most efficient large civil engine
The 68-72,000lb thrust Trent 7000 will deliver a step change in performance and economics compared to the current version of the Trent 700. It will improve specific fuel consumption by ten per cent; have twice the bypass ratio; and will halve perceived noise.
Fabrice Bregier, Airbus, President and Chief Executive Officer, said: "The A330neo is the logical evolution of our reliable and versatile A330 Family. It provides an optimal solution for airlines around the world looking to minimise their fuel and operating costs while offering best-in-class comfort to their passengers. We see strong market potential for the A330neo and we are confident this new aircraft will be a success in the medium-haul segment. The Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 combines world-leading experience and cutting-edge technology to play a vital role in ensuring the success of this aircraft for decades to come."
Eric Schulz, Rolls-Royce, President, Civil Large Engines, said: "The Trent 7000 is the natural selection for the A330neo, bringing together our engine experience, design architecture and leading-edge technology. With this pedigree, supported by TotalCare® services that maximise aircraft availability, the economic advantages of the Trent 7000 are helping to write this new chapter in the A330 success story."
The first engine test run for the Trent 7000 is planned for 2015 with certification expected in 2017, supporting an aircraft entry into service in Q4 2017. The engine design draws upon existing architectures and expertise which are the result of ongoing research and development investment, of approximately £1bn a year, which Rolls-Royce makes across its aerospace and non-aerospace businesses. Each previous member of the Trent engine family has been either the market leader, aircraft launch engine, or both.

A330neo: Powering into the next decade

14 JULY 2014 PRESS RELEASE

Building on the proven economics, versatility and high reliability of the hugely popular A330, the A330-800neo and A330-900neo launched in July 2014 will reduce fuel consumption by a further 14% per seat compared with today’s A330, making them the most cost efficient, medium range widebody aircraft on the market. As well as delivering significant fuel savings for airlines and even quieter operation, the aircraft will also expand operators’ market opportunities with a range capability increase of around 400 nautical miles while carrying more payload. Moreover, the A330neo will not only match the cash operating costs per seat of its nearest competitor, the 787, but also surpass it on direct operating costs per seat, and do so while offering an inch greater seat-width comfort in economy class.

The A330neo incorporates latest generation Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines with a larger 112” diameter fan for a 10:1 bypass ratio, more seats and new cabin features. In addition, aerodynamic efficiency enhancements, including composite ‘A350 XWB inspired’ winglets and a wing span extension from 60.3m to 64m, will together confer increased lift and reduced drag. First deliveries of the newest A330 Family members are scheduled to start in Q4 2017.

Cabin evolution

Through an innovative use of the cabin space, the A330-900neo will accommodate up to 10 additional seats (from 300 to 310), while the A330-800neo will seat up to six additional passengers (from 246 to 252) – and retain the same high comfort standard as today’s A330, with 18-inch wide seats in economy class. Moreover, all passengers will enjoy a 21st century on-board experience, including 4th-generation high-definition in-flight entertainment (IFE), full connectivity plus the same full-LED mood-lighting as in the A330’s big brother – the A350 XWB. The LED cabin lighting will be lighter and cheaper to maintain than traditional illumination while offering unlimited mood-lighting customisation scenarios.

Cabin crew in the A330neo will benefit too with a cabin intercommunication data system (CIDS) upgrade, featuring a new flight attendant panel to control the mood lighting, water levels, temperatures and voice announcements. In addition, the galley insert developed for the A350 XWB will be available for the A330 and will include an espresso coffee maker, chillers, and ovens with baking functions. Pilots and cabin crew alike will also appreciate the new segregated lower-deck mobile crew-rest. This also frees-up more space on the main deck for extra passenger capacity.

Operations and maintenance

As well as having operational commonality with other members of the Airbus Family – including the same pilot type rating as the A330, common type rating with the A350 XWB and the same “Code-E” gate category as the A330-200 and -300 – the NEO will also retain 95% airframe spares commonality with A330 and inherit its marketing-leading reliability.

It will also offer five percent reduced airframe maintenance costs, thanks to further evolution in the already efficient A330 scheduled maintenance programme, now with fewer tasks, longer intervals between some checks, as well as a reduction in manhours over the typical 12-year maintenance cycle for new parts such as the engine pylons and some sections of the improved wing. Also helping to achieve the five percent reduction in maintenance costs is the new electrical bleed air system (EBAS) which replaces pneumatic controls with full electrical regulation – a technology which is already proven on the A380 and also features on the A350.

Overall the new A330neo builds on the A330 market leadership, in efficiency, versatility, reliability and profitability, and is the perfect choice for airlines.

A350 was supposed to be A330 replacement, A330neo is more likely to cannibalize A350 sales than hurting Boeing 777X or 787 numbers.

To counter 787 effectively, Airbus either need to stretch A321 or develop a new airframe.
