Airbus A330 Neo - AirAsia X Orders 50 A330-900neo at Farnborough Air Show 2014

Now that NokScoot is out of business, XJ just need SL mid-long haul to flounder, they will monopolise Thai low cost long haul. Thailand aviation and tourism sectors perhaps will recover faster than others in the region. They will need every aircraft they can get.

The A330 Family legacy continues with the 1,500th delivery

The A330 Family’s 1,500th delivery on 21st September to Delta Air Lines says a great deal about the enduring qualities of the aircraft's original design, coupled with the constant infusion of the latest technologies, culminating in today’s A330neo variant. The application of ‘incremental innovations’, since its service entry, has resulted in the A330’s ongoing versatility, functionality, increased payload-range, class-leading economy with state-of-the-art Airspace cabin comfort and 4th generation IFE.

Today the A330neo builds on the A330ceo’s proven credentials, saving airlines around 25 percent fuel burn per seat compared with the previous-generation aircraft it replaces: the 767-300. Comprising two versions – the A330-900 (which first entered service in November 2018 with TAP) and the smaller A330-800 (which enters service in the coming weeks) – the NEO incorporates a new high-aspect ratio wing with carbon fibre wing tips, the latest-generation Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines with a 10:1 bypass ratio, more seats and new Airspace cabin features such as fully-variable colour LED mood lighting. It is noteworthy that the newest A330neo variant with a 251t MTOW (with certification iminent at the time of writing) can fly around 8,000nm with a full passenger load – around twice as far as the very first 212t A330-300 had achieved. Furthermore, the A330neo is a very quiet aircraft, exceeding the most stringent industry regulations – for example, achieving 16dB lower noise margin relative to ICAO Chapter 4.

It is interesting to note that Airbus has now made some moves to making the A330 Neo into a shorter range, lower thrust version (previously called "regional") to make it attractive to airlines as a B757/767 replacement.

The idea has been floating since 2018 when SamChui first reported it. I would say its potential maybe very small since Saudi Government has place an order for 78 B787 recently. Saudia is the only current operator for A330ceo Regional. The youngest one was recently burnt to ground at Sudan Khartoum International Airport.

So maybe that is why we are seeing some small orders coming through lately. Airlines who need new planes urgently may be able to get A330Neos faster than the A350/B787.

That would be under the assumption that the airlines have enough manpower to add more airframes into their fleet. American Airlines is short of long haul aircraft, cancelling route all over, there are plenty of B787 NTUs recently due to cancelled orders, they have cash, but still did not take in those NTUs overnight because of manpower issue. Starlux was also supposed to take ex-AirAsia X A330-900neo, but decided to abort their plan and waited for their own to arrive. Now they are pressing Airbus to get their production up and expedite the delivery, but Airbus is unable to do so. They can opt to run to Boeing, Boeing will tell them to wait till 2025/2026 when the earliest B787 slot is available.
