Naim 6 Report post Posted November 5, 2007 Yes, a very famous plane indeed. Google for reg 'N70700' to tell all. Now mothballed at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center at Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum annex, near Washington Dulles International Airport. But still an awesome sight. [All pics taken Feb, 2005] And I came face to face with a wickedly awesome machine! Spot it in this pic and tell me what it is. +++

Rozhan 0 Report post Posted November 5, 2007 (edited) Naim, is it the plane that 'helped' kill 100,000+ people at Hiroshima? The Enola Gay. By the way, glad to see the 'grand daddy' of the 707, 727 and 737 series. I understand the B737-900 exceeds the length of this original prototype. Nice exhibit. Note how they treat the historical and vintage planes with respect under a roof. Malaysian air 'musuem' and similar exhibits at Pekan let them planes bake under the sun. TW Teo 0 Report post Posted November 5, 2007 The Smithsonian! Got to visit it one day. I was in Seattle's Museum of Flight a couple of weeks ago, and here's Tex Johnson's helmet and boots used during that infamous barrel roll: Naim do you mind if I post some pics from Seattle in this thread? Seems fitting...

Naim 6 Report post Posted November 6, 2007 Naim, is it the plane that 'helped' kill 100,000+ people at Hiroshima? The Enola Gay. ... Well done, you got it, sir! Enola Gay the #82 plane, the silver B29 Superfortress. In fact I dug out these pics when I heard that its pilot, Tibbets, died last week at 92. I've been to Ground Zero in Hiroshima, searched for Enola Gay, but did not get to see Tibbets.

Radzi 2 Report post Posted November 6, 2007 To my knowledge there is only one replica in the whole of Smithsonian Air and space Museum: the Wrights flyer. The rest are all original items. Visited once in 1993, wish to go there again someday.

Naim 6 Report post Posted November 8, 2007 Is it just me, or is that the Wright brothers flyer??? The yellow machine, at the right of the pic... Don't think so. The ori 1903 Wright Flyer is in the other (older) Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum, the one located in downtown Washington DC. This one has a lot of space-related exhibits too. I visited it when I returned to DC 4 months later, in June 2005. Here's a self-portrait taken there.
