hey guys,

just saw the news and PM being asked bout the jet. according to him, he say its leased by PMB. like tats gonna make any difference. its still tax money... leased or puchased... must be some shady deal going on here and surely a connection somewhere with regards to Uncle Tony at the Red Fort, me think...

He actually said it is "sewa" from PMB, not leased by PMB. The lessee is "kita" (don't know who or what "kita" is in his dictionary, as if "kita" and "PMB" are totally unrelated entities)

I dont think it has anything to do with TF or the Red Fort .

Tony wants ' more passengers ' and more flights .

He wouldn't be interested in something like this ..

I agree with you. I think it has more to do with the A380 deal that PMB signed up for. The A319CJ is probably the cherry on the cake.

If you recall, back in 1995 or was it 96, MH ordered 10 744, 11 772IGW (now the 772ER) and 4 773 (eventually converted to 6 772ER). Then, a BBJ was ordered, and this BBJ Mastar was also used by the Govn, despite being marketed and paid for by MH.

Well, you know where the BBJ is now, but MH then may have just been the convenient "paymaster" to buy and upkeep that plane for predominantly non-commercial reasons.

Now, move 10+ years forward and you have PMB and the A319CJ, and our poor PM disowns PMB as being a non-M'sian Governement owned entity. Maybe they sold PMB to Temasek or to Dubai Holdings or to (name a foreign entity that you like) yesterday and we minions don't know about.

(From Bernama below...I would be tempted to change the title to "Government disowns PMB"...)

Abdullah Denies Buying Executive Jet

SEPANG, Jan 29 (Bernama) -- Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Monday denied news reports that he had bought an executive jet, and explained that the government had only leased the aircraft from Penerbangan Malaysia Berhad.

The prime minister pointed out that the plane was not for his use alone.

"The jet is for use of the government, not the prime minister (only)," he told a news conference at the KL International Airport upon his return from London after having attended the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland.

Elaborating, Abdullah said: "The aircraft belongs to Penerbangan Malaysia Berhad; it was (bought with) their money[/b]. We just leased it like how MAS (Malaysia Airlines) leases aircraft from them."

Websites had reported that Abdullah had bought an ACJ 319 VIP jet from Airbus at a cost of between US$55 million and US$60 million.

The websites claimed, among other things, that the aircraft based on the A320 model was undergoing internal refurbishing in Switzerland.

Explaining the rationale for leasing the aircraft, Abdullah said leasing enabled the government to save cost.

"Why do we (the government) have to buy aircraft? If we buy, we have to undertake repairs and expend on many other things.

"If is preferable to lease, and when there are repairs to be made, the lessor has to provide a replacement aircraft for our use," he said.

Abdullah pointed out that Penerbangan Malaysia stood to gain from the lease, just as it earned from the lease of aircraft to MAS.

Leased a/c? Yeah right........ But at least, they are opting for CFM engined A319, meaning it can be maintained by Tony & Co. without going overseas.

It feels like the government wants to match the life style not just of Japanese government but apparently the Sultan of Brunei as well.

AFAIK, the governments of S. Korea, China (PRC), Britain still charter from their national airlines for government travel. Seems like our PM is enjoying his Sultanate lifestyle.

That amount of money could have help us to rebuild parts of Johor damaged by flooding and a few new schools to educate young Malaysians. I am sure all of us are sick and tired of UMNO or Barisan Nasional and their highly corrupted politics. So what should we do next? Make sure that you guys would vote for a decent government in the next election.

The next question then is...why do you have to lease the a/c? and why make PMB buy the a/c???

Perhaps is just to divert the attention to a 3rd party, so normal layman like Ali does not have a clue of who PMB belongs to.

And the next question is, why do our politicians need such a luxurious a/c when they have flown MAS or existing RMAF luxurious fleet?

Oh by the way, wonder what happened to the RM30 million yacht which Pak Lah bought from Turkey?

Unsurprisingly he denied about having bought that yacht too. Denial is the word of this term.

Do you know that Abdullah has a 5 million house in Perth? Do you know he has a stable of luxury cars in London? Do you know, while Johor was suffering from floods and people were dying, he was in Perth officiating his brother’s restaurant?

And the list goes on....

We should have a strong anti-graft and corruption agency to avoid situation like this. Guaranteed freedom of speech and removal of Internal Security Act seems to be the way to go.

Is there a websitesimiliar to airliners.net for yatch and ships? It could be fun.

Remember that the latest controversy about the A319 started with the picture of the aircraft in A.net. Therefore its existence cannot be denied. And looks like the PM is fumbling in his answer about this.

The A319 has been at Basle/Muhlhouse airport for the interior 'modifications' for a few weeks already <_>

Malaysian PM's Executive Jet Sparks Row

January 30, 2007

Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi kicked up a storm on Monday after ordering a new USD$50 million luxury jet despite a promise to rein in spending since he took office three years ago.

The Airbus A319, ordered by state leasing firm Penerbangan Malaysia, will be used by the prime minister, the king and other leaders, a source close to the deal said.

Delivery is set for July after it is fitted out in Switzerland, the source said. "The purchase was confirmed last year," the source said. "It will join an existing VVIP fleet."

The prime minister's office had no immediate comment. Abdullah returns home later on Monday after attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

"There's no justification for such acquisition," parliamentary opposition leader Lim Kit Siang said. "It's most unfortunate the whole thing has been done without transparency and without coming to parliament for approval."

Political analyst and former newspaper editor A. Kadir Jasin said: "The corporate jet will punch a USD$50 million hole in our pocket. That's a big hole... which can build a lot of classrooms, hospital wards and not to mention mosques and rural roads for the people."

Looks like this problem is began to haunt the Malaysian politics issue...Wonder why this issue didn't exist when TUDM acquire the B737-700 BBJ from MH?

I suppose things were not bad then as it is now. With too many hikes in prices, increase in crime rates and the cherry on the cake, the very person associated with the jet asking us all to 'change our lifestyle', it's akin to having sand in your rice - purely bad taste.

Robert Fisk once said, "If you bash and bash and bash at something, it will bang back at you". I think the people have had enough of being 'bashed'.

All the answers that were provided by him is somewhat ' insufficient ' from my point of view

First things first , is there a NEED for this aircraft with our current fleet of VVIP jets?

If they really wanted an aircraft , they could just take MPA and refurbish it and woila , easily 40Mil USD saved .

Come on , he could do better than that as far as explanations are concerned

And on a side note

a.net has really caused a stir in Malaysia ..

We have the ACA. But I think even the agency's credibility is doubt by some people

ACA is practically impotent if the Attorney General, after considering 'national interest' or whatever 'interests', decides not to charge a suspect. And this is not limited to corruption but to all other crimes.

So far we know that practically almost anything that can topple the government is practically impotent. They are there just for a show only. We really need a strong anti-corruption agency like Hong Kong's ICAC, which will conduct investigation even within the government for corrupted practices.

Guaranteed freedom of speech will ensure corrupted cases will be exposed by anyone. Abolishment of Internal Security Act means the government can be challenged and the public will have no fear for being jailed for saying the "wrong" thing. UMNO and BN has been in power for far too long that their corrupted tentacles have almost reached the core of the earth. If we continue to vote for them, it is only a matter of time we will be completely screwed over by them.

By the way, I also think we have too much Sultans or Agung to take care of. Imagine 9 states having their Agungs and their families could keep the BBJ and A319CRJ busy. What a complete waste of tax payers money. While rotating terms of the sultans is a good idea, but it also wastes a lot of money for their swearing into the throne and etc. Oh well, all covered by tax payers... no worries, mate!
