Najib ‘controlled by’ Rosmah, says Mahfuz

KUALA LUMPUR: The Cabinet’s decision to allow Rosmah Mansor to travel on a government jet for an official visit to Qatar signals that the prime minister’s wife is meddling in government affairs.

Stating this at the Parliament lobby today, PAS’ Pokok Sena MP Mahfuz Omar said Rosmah has no capacity to represent the country, what more on an official visit to foreign soil.

“The cabinet decision is pointing to the prime minister wife’s meddling in government affairs. This cabinet is irresponsible and without dignity in making decision in the interest of one person,” he said.

He was referring to Minister in the Prime Minister Shahidan Kassim statement on Monday that Rosmah is allowed to travel on government jet provided that the cabinet endorses her trip.

Shahidan also said the cabinet adhered to the principles of responsibility and transparency when approving Rosmah’s recent trip to the 4th Qatar International Business Women.

Mahfuz said instead of sending the wife, the prime minister should have sent his minister or official to attend an important meeting.

If the invitation is indeed addressed to the prime minister’s wife, then Rosmah should have gone without using the public resources, he added

‘Imagine the prime minister comes to the cabinet and says ‘hey, my wife needs to go overseas, please approve her trip’, how funny is that,” he told FMT after the media conference.

“If (the fourth prime minister) Mahathir Mohamad once said (the fifth prime minister) Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was controlled by the fourth floor boys, then Najib is now controlled by his wife,” he added.

He urged the government to cease the nepotism practice.

Najib’s overseas’ trips were put under the microscope recently after Seremban MP Anthony Loke highlighted that a whopping RM182 million was spent by Najib on 372 flights to 339 destinations.

I imagine if MASTAR is still in existence today, with various executive jets in its fleet, perhaps will boost MAS profits and reduce the load of the AF to operate Vvip flights and focus more on the defence role. I reckon the demand for vip travel is just too high in the 'organization', despite having first/bussiness class air travel as their perks ..even the current 3 Vip jets+2 Vip turboprop+4 Vip heli in the AF is inadequate, which requires other non vip aircraft (9M&FM) of the organization also being utilized for Vip flights. Furthermore, they still need to get jets operated by MLM, JP1,VJS,Phoenix etc. Perhaps they are also very excited with C.Jet that might start next year frm SZB.

Sahidan mentioned chartering an airline would not be expensive, he gave a figure of how much does a chartered 747 cost. Only a big airliner in his mind. I understand the need for security, speed, making private calls, private discussions on board but i wonder if it is really necessary for elected ones and their entourage to use facilities on board mid & large executive jets (bedroom, showers, conference) each time during the short hops to visit their constituency and other short haul flights. If they lessen the "naik executive jet, baru ada style! " there are chances their rating might increase. Even the Thai leader and her team has started using TG on some official visits.

Eh..goverment jet to Qatar? Which one? isn't the ACJ is only rented from JP1? Sahidan mentioned RM28.8mil/year to rent.

Some groups always regard any executive jet used by gov leaders and their familes are 'goverment jets' For instance, these are not gov jets:

Government jets refer to jets whose ownership and/or operating costs are borne by U and I. It doesnt matter who legally owns the aircraft.

Minister insists Singapore PM’s flights costlier than Putrajaya’s jets

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 19 — Minister Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim today sought to fend off allegations of excess in Putrajaya’s use of private jets, claiming it would cost more to follow Singapore’s choice to charter flights for government leaders.

Saying that Pakatan Rakyat lawmakers were misguided in praising Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong for choosing travel on a commercial airliner on his way to a recent summit, the minister in the Prime Minister’s Department said the flight was chartered and could not be considered commercial.

“They say the Singapore PM uses a commercial flight; that’s not true. If you look at the summit at the airport you see his plane parked with the rest. That means he chartered the plane and not fly on a commercial flight like what is claimed.

“To charter the plane is more expensive than to use your own plane,” he told a press conference in Parliament here.

Yesterday, PR lawmakers were up in arms over the cost to maintain the government jet ACJ319, the private aircraft used to fly the prime minister and other government officials, much like the Air Force One in the US.

On October 3, it was disclosed in Parliament that Putrajaya spends RM28.8 million in annual rental and RM5.5 million to maintain the jet.

On top of that, as much as RM44 million in taxpayers’ funds were used to fund the prime minister’s overseas travel since 2008.

The revelation came amid Putrajaya’s call for the Malaysian public to adapt to subsidy withdrawals as the government aims to trim its ballooning debt.

Opposition MPs have branded the call hypocritical, accusing government leaders of living lavishly as seen from their hefty allowances and huge monthly pay.

But Shahidan claimed it was wrong to assume that there was abuse in the use of the private jet or in the prime minister’s travel expenses, and called on detractors to “repent”.

“It’s not nice to make such allegations. There was never any power abuse in this case... so I advise those who exploit this issue to repent. Repent before god makes you repent,” he said.

Obviously thisd10t has no idea what the hell he's talking about. Just because "his plane parked with the rest" means he chartered? No such thing as long layover???

Allowing Rosmah on official jet an abuse of power, says Pakatan MPs

Opposition lawmakers have accused the Cabinet of acting irresponsibly and in an undignified manner for approving the use of a government jet for a recent trip by Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor (pic) to Qatar.

They said the decision was an abuse of power and interfered in the country's administration.

"If the prime minister can't attend, then a minister or an ambassador can be sent in his stead, not his wife.

"When Obama was unable to come to Malaysia, he sent his representative, not his wife," PAS vice-president Datuk Mahfuz Omar said sarcastically, referring to the US President's cancellation of his Malaysian visit last month. In his place were US Secretary of State John Kerry and Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker.

Mahfuz, questioning Rosmah's credentials in representing the country, warned the Cabinet's decision was dangerous for the future of the country.

"This is a Cabinet without any dignity and highly irresponsible to make a decision based on one person instead of taking national interest into account," he said.

Rosmah was in Qatar last week to deliver a keynote address at the 4th Qatar International Business Women Forum in Doha, organised by the Qatari Businesswomen Association and the Interactive Business Network.

Accompanying her were Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, who is special adviser to the prime minister on women entrepreneurs and professionals; Datin Seri Siti Rubiah Datuk Abdul Samad, wife of the Foreign Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman; Datin Seri Khamarzan Ahmad Meah, wife of International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed; and Datin Seri Che Kamariah Zakaria, wife of Second Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh.

PKR Kelana Jaya MP Wong Chen said Rosmah was neither the country's representative nor ambassador.

"It sets a terrible precedent and shows no semblance of decency on the government's part," he charged.

DAP's Klang MP Charles Santiago said the Cabinet's decision was an abuse of power and waste of public resources.

"She is not an elected representative and giving her permission to fly on a government jet is an abuse of power.

"If she is accompanying the prime minister I would have understood but she was flying on her own to Qatar," he added, saying there was financial imprudence as well as an absence of clear protocols.

Putrajaya has defended Rosmah's use of the official jet, saying her trip was "fruitful".

"The outcome of the visit was very positive, we must be proud and thankful of the efforts and hardwork put in by the prime minister's wife.

"A visit to a foreign country is not for fun, it involved a lot of responsibilities," said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim. - November 20, 2013.

Have we run out of eminent Malaysian women to represent the country that we have to resort to ministers' wives? Are they entrepreneurs?

Rosmah: I don’t stoop that low

KUALA LUMPUR: The Prime Minister’s wife Rosmah Mansor today said she was “happy” and unperturbed by criticisms leveled her way over her use of a government-funded jet last week.

“I’m happy, I’m just going to do my work. I don’t talk, I don’t comment, I don’t go down to that level,” she said when met by reporters after officiating the ground-breaking ceremony of autism centre Permata Kurnia here.

But she directed reporters to her special officer Siti Azizah Sheikh Abod from the prime minister’s department, who said that the trip to Qatar was justified as it was done in the name of national interest.

“It was not for personal reasons. She was invited by the International Women’s Association. (While) she does not represent the govt, but she went there for the sake of the government’s interest.

“She is the Prime Minister’s wife, she went to give the keynote address. So she made the address not as a government representative, but in the name of national interest,” said Siti Azizah.

She stressed that there was no issue of conflict of interest as the cabinet had approved their application for the use of the jet; which they submitted through the foreign ministry.

“The issue is that according to the government circular, usage of private jet [is allowed for] any VIP depending on cabinet approval.

“The paper was submitted to the cabinet and the cabinet approved it. So that’s it.”

On Monday, opposition MPS in Parliament protested Rosmah’s use of the private jet, insisting that she should have instead used her personal expenses rather than rely on taxpayers’ monies.

‘Cabinet gave approval through a consensus’

They said her use of private jets at the expense of public funds flies in the face of the government’s insistence that the rakyat must accept subsidy slashes and the goods and services tax to reign in the budget deficit.

The government spends RM15 million for fuel and RM160 million for maintenance of their executive jets, while a single trip costs around RM470,000.

Minister in the PM’s department Shahidan Kassim said the Cabinet had agreed to Rosmah representing Malaysia at the 4th Qatar International Business Women Forum Doha, Qatar.

He added that the disgruntled MPs were free to challenge the decision in court.

When asked today who had chaired the Cabinet meeting, Siti Azizah said: “That is not the issue”.

“We presented it before the Cabinet. Do not ask who chaired the meeting. That is not the issue. The issue is that the Cabinet gave approval through a consensus,” she said.

Throughout her controversial trip, Rosmah was accompanied by ministers’ wives, Pengerang MP Azalina Othman, the prime minister’s special advisor Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.

Aside from the forum, she spent her four days attending a charity fashion gala, visiting the Qatar Foundation ad the International Humanitarian City in Dubai.

BN MPs had said Malaysians should be proud that Qatar had given Rosmah good recognition, and that she had upheld the good name of Malaysia.
