Young Malaysian to fly solo around the globe on single piston aircraft

Recommended Posts

KUALA LUMPUR: A 21-year-old Malaysian pilot will attempt to set a world record by flying 14,000 nautical miles around the globe on a solo expedition for 50 days using a single piston aircraft, Cessna P210.

Captain James Anthony Tan from Sungai Long, Kajang, will take-off on his historical voyage as “the first Malaysian from Asean country to have flown around the world solo” on Feb 23 at the Subang Skypark, which will be launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

The current record holder, as the youngest pilot to have flown around the globe, is a Swiss, Captain Carlo Schmid, who flew solo last year at the age of 22.

Tan had last year earned a place in The Malaysian Book of Records as the youngest pilot, who flew solo for 13,803 nautical miles on a single-piston aircraft from the United Kingdom to Bangkok, Thailand.

“I wish to perform this feat in 2013 and represent 1Malaysia for this mission. Once accomplished, not only Malaysia would have its first flight around the world, but also be the proud holder of the record for having the youngest in the world since 1924 to hold this historic record,” he told Bernama.

Meanwhile, 1Malaysia Around The World (1TRW) project manager, Azean Majid said the flight was organised by the Malaysia Youth Pilot Association, Defence Ministry and Malaysia Felda Youth Council.

She said Tan would fly from Feb 23 around the would and return to Subang, here on April 10.

Azean said any update about Tan’s voyage could be obtained from the 1TRW website and its social media at www.1rtw.com.my, www.facebook/1mrtw or twitter/1rtw.

She said the expedition was 10 percent sponsored by the government and 90 percent from private sector. –Bernama

LANGKAWI, March 26 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today handed over the ‘Jalur Gemilang’ to Captain James Tan, who, at 21, is attempting to become the youngest solo pilot ever, to circumnavigate the world.

With an N81MG Cessna aircraft, his 50-day journey will cover a total distance of 22,000 nautical miles (41,000km) with stopovers at 31 destinations.

In his attempt to break the world record currently held by Swiss national Carlo Schmid, 22, last year, the Hulu Langat-born Tan has set his goal to empower the mind of Malaysian youths through his mission.

“With the 1Malaysia concept, I will try my best to bring global pride to Malaysia. I hope this endeavour will motivate more Malaysian youths to take on world challenges,” he said after receiving the national flag from Najib during the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (Lima) here.

Last year, he was honoured by the Malaysia Book of Records as ‘The Youngest Malaysian to fly a Single Engine Piston Aircraft in an Expedition’.

Tan said his mission could also motivate youths globally to become high achievers.

Meanwhile, his father, Tan On Chin, 58, recalled that his son was fascinated with aircraft when he was merely five, and decided to support him to fulfil his dream.

“My wife and I always told him to do the right thing, to do what he wants, and today, I am very glad to see what he has achieved,” he said. – Bernama

He was photographed wearing four-bar epaulette.

The only thing is, once he come back from his mission and join an airline (as most pilot will want to), he will be demoted.

... he has done it.. kudos...

PETALING JAYA, May 14 — The first Malaysian to fly solo around the world, Captain James Anthony Tan, has admitted flying with frozen fuel into fearsome thunderstorms as the scariest experience he encountered during his 48-day flight.

The 21-year-old captain said he encountered thunderstorms whereby, his aircraft had to fly into heavy rain and lightning during a flying route from Taiwan to Japan.

“From Juno (USA) to Vancouver (Canada), I had my number one fuel pump fail, my hydraulic line leaking and my entire dashboard vibrating violently...I had no idea what was happening,” he told media members after his aircraft landed on Malaysian soil at 4.30pm today.

Above Bearing Straits, the temperature on the ground was -20º Celcius and he had to use a screwdriver to break ice which was caught in the aircraft structure and moving components.

It was a very scary experience but he had to do what other pilots would, that is, remain calm, cool and relaxed.

The mission by Tan, from Sungai Long, Kajang, earned him a place in the World Guiness Book of Records after he succeeded in becoming the youngest pilot to fly solo around the world in the fastest time. The previous record was held by a 22-year-old youth who completed the journey in 80 days on July 11, last year.

Tan is also the youngest pilot from Asean to achieve the feat. The expedition took him to 20 countries and he made 30 stop-overs, among them in China, Japan, Russia, USA and Canada, with the final stop at the RMAF base in Subang here.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, at a special ceremony held in conjunction with Tan’s return from the ‘1Malaysia Mission Around the World’ at the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) airbase in Subang, had described Tan’s success in making it into the World Guinness Book of Records as a major milestone for the counrty.

Tan also promised to reveal more about his experiences in a soon-to-be published book.

In 48 days via various countries, he had missed a lot, including Malaysia’s 13th General Election. Nevertheless, what he experienced has made him very grateful that he was born a Malaysian.

For Tan, Malaysia has always been the most beautiful and peaceful country, ranked No 7 as the most visited country in the world, and Kuala Lumpur is always attractive.

To a question from one of the media members on what he felt towards the country after the Barisan Nasional won the people’s mandate, he replied: “Pakistanis pay RM3.90 for one litre of petrol, while Malaysians only pay RM1.90 per litre,” he said, showing a sign of disbelief on why people here were complaining.

Meanwhile, his father, Tan On Chin, 58, said he always feared that his only son would get into a dangerous situation while flying.

“Actually, I did not want him to fly as I wondered how he could make his dream come true...I told him that he did not have the money to buy a car; then, how is he going to get an aeroplane?,” he said with a smile. – Bernama

and i dont think pakistan is oil producer nation like malaysia (correct me if i wrong)...

Makes no difference to be honest. Nowadays Malaysian oil consumption is getting close to exceeding daily oil production.

Actually I don't understand why oil should cost less in an oil producing country either. By that reasoning, cars should also cost less in car producing countries, and rice should cost less in rice producing countries.

Incidentally, the oil that Malaysia produces is more for export due to the high quality crude. What we use for petrol is imported. So market prices apply.
