Naim 6 Report post Posted November 29, 2009 November 29, 2009 17:26 PM After 20 Years, LIMA 2009 Continues To Enthral LANGKAWI, Nov 29 (Bernama) -- Despite having been around for nearly two decades, the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2009 (LIMA 2009) is hardly short on 'firsts' and fresh elements as it enters 10th edition next week. Like the legendary status accorded the island where the event will be held, LIMA is set to continue maintaining its iconic status, in as far as appeal and relevance are concerned. If previous LIMA editions were usually co-hosted by two different maritime and aerospace organisers, what's distinctive this year is that there is just a single organiser. HW Lima Sdn Bhd, the maritime segment host since 1997, has been mandated to solely host this year's LIMA edition at the island from Dec 1 to 5. "We are building on our good work done previously. We believe this year's LIMA will proceed smoothly," said HW Lima managing director Ahmad Dzuhri Abdul Wahab. What will be an interesting feature about LIMA 2009, is that the maritime and aerospace exhibition will be merged under one roof at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre (MIEC). According to the organiser, over 325 exhibitors from 25 countries would take part in this year's edition. This means, there will be no booth for the maritime exhibition at the Awana Porto Malai. Only vessels will be berthed there. There are 96 vessels, including warships, which will be docking at the Awana Porto Malai. This year, LIMA is where Malaysia's submarine KD Tunku Abdul Rahman will be making its maiden appearance and likely to emerge as the main attraction at the maritime's segment show. "We will be welcoming our own submarine, KD Tunku Abdul Rahman. I feel that she is going to be the main attraction at Awana Porto Malai," said Ahmad Dzuhri. KD TAR is a Scorpene-class conventional submarine that is diesel electric powered. Built by DCNS of France and Navantia of Spain, it is said to be one of the most advanced and silent submarines, to date. Another 'first' for LIMA is that for the first time in its history, the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) will make an appearance. Armed with its AH-64D Longbow Apache helicopter and F-16 Fighting Falcon jet, the RSAF is set to thrill the crowds of LIMA 2009, with the fanciful aerial displays of both aircrafts. Also making a debut at this year's air show is the United States Air Force B-52 bomber. It is set to offer a special treat by performing a low-level fly-past. Having begun in 1991, LIMA is now the premier destination for aerospace and maritime manufacturers targeting the Asia Pacific market in the defence, enforcement and civil sectors. -- BERNAMA http://bernama.com/bernama/v3/news_lite.php?id=458641

Naim 6 Report post Posted December 2, 2009 ... Is thr any different between the morning and the afternoon airshow? Will the b-52 appear on saturday? Thanks. No difference, but weather dictates who'll perform or not - normally morning has better weather. B52 came for flypast (on its way from Diego Garcia to Guam) and is gone already. Naim 6 Report post Posted December 5, 2009 December 05, 2009 18:41 PM LIMA Will Continue In 2011, Says Defence Minister LANGKAWI, Dec 5 (Bernama) -- The biannual Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) will continue in 2011, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said. He said the venue for the exhibition would also be Langkawi. He said he was satisfied with LIMA 2009 and that various improvements would be made to make LIMA 2011 an important hub to market defence assets as well as attract more participation from international as well as local companies. Many companies, including from Russia and the United States of America had expressed their intention to participate in Lima 2011, he told a news conference at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Center (MIEC) on the last day of LIMA 2009 Saturday. Ahmad Zahid said HW LIMA Sdn Bhd, the sole organiser of this year's LIMA, would also be entrusted to organise LIMA 2011 for both the air and maritime sectors. On the drop in the number of companies participating in LIMA 2009, Ahmad Zahid said it was because of the global economic recession. This year's LIMA attracted the participation of 325 companies, from 452 in LIMA 2007. Ahmad Zahid said this year's LIMA attracted about 40,000 visitors and 38,000 trade visitors compared with 40,600 trade visitors and more than 30,000 ordinary visitors during LIMA 2007. He said the Defence Minister would continue to work with the Tourism Ministry for LIMA 2011 to attract more foreign visitors to the event. -- BERNAMA http://bernama.com/bernama/v3/news_lite.php?id=460278

KK Lee 5 Report post Posted December 15, 2009 Spoke to a friend who is in the hospitality business. According to him; LIMA organizer returned about 40% of pre-book rooms to hotels the night before the show start. December is a peak season in Langkawi, these returned room is a lost revenue to hoteliers. Some hoteliers wish LIMA not held in peak season and room rate in LIMA 2011 will be likely higher. Hoteliers also complain that LIMA evening events were not held in various hotels like previously. If these hoteliers voice is to be heard, guess a change of LIMA organizer is expected.
