Yes indeed. Qantas grew too complacent after they edged out Ansett, Impulse and whichever players that came into the market. Little did they know Virgin Blue, precursor of Virgin Australia could become their most formidable enemy few years down the road.

QF focus too much on LAX and LHR and loss China, India and SEA to SQ, TG, CX and MH. They should use 787 to open up new routes to Asia. While the likes of MH, SQ and TG have multiple dailies to major Chinese cities, QF only have one to PVG?

That has been done too. I'm not sure how MH works, but for TM, yes, mostly for the Top Mgmt. Last year, TM did it for some GMs and VPs.

Sound like removing old management.

I would really like to know how the tie-up with EK has affected the bottom line for QF. Has it done more damage than good? Looks like it so far.

No time machine to change Qantas fleet order – Joyce

 

Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce has suggested his airline’s order for the Airbus A380, A330 and Boeing 747-400ER placed in 2000 was, in hindsight, a mistake.

“It is great to be able to say I wish I could get in a time machine and go back to 2000 and [change] the fleet order [made by] not the last CEO, the CEO before that,” Joyce told an Australia Israel Chamber of Commerce lunch event in Sydney on Wednesday.

“But the reality is we have the aircraft we have. We just have to get on with life,” he said in comments reported by the Australian Financial Review.

In 2000, under then CEO James Strong, Qantas placed an order for 12 A380s, 13 A330s (both -200s and -300s) and six 747-400ERs in what was then its largest fleet order decision to date. The evaluation that led to that decision explicitly rejected the Boeing 777, which was deemed too big for domestic services (for which the A330 was originally ordered for), and instead elected for the 747-400ER and A380 for international services.

A common criticism of the airline in recent years has been its decision not to order the 777, particularly in its 777-300ER form, for long-haul international services. Instead the 12 A380s and six 747-400ERs from that 2000 order form the core of the airline’s long-haul international fleet.

It is highly debatable whether the strategic alliance with Emirates has brought any benefit to Qantas ... or has it let the wolf into the chicken coop instead. Notice that nothing said in recent times about Qantas' woes made any mention of Emirates ... very conveniently left out because perhaps it is another hot potato that could prove too hot to handle.

 

Certainly the A380 is not considered a mistake ... if the airline is able to strike a good balance between load factor and yield. Could the premium cabin in Qantas' A380 be filled by staff (who are using their entitlement to travel in J or F Class) ... leaving too few seats to sell to commercial passengers?

 

Whatever the case may be, it is surprisingly that Qantas has still not tried to make right what was previously done wrongly ... ie. acquire the best version of the B777 and dump the least productive aircraft type(s) in its fleet.

Qantas posts 'confronting' $2.8b loss after hefty writedowns
Analysts had expected the airline to report an underlying pre-tax loss of about $750 million but had not expected the airline would take such heavy writedowns on its fleet.

'The change is designed to speed up service and give travellers more room to dine and work on a laptop or tablet. Despite the “fast food” look, Qantas has promised the meals will be 50 per cent larger than current tucker served in domestic economy and of a better standard.'

Well most indonesian carrier already serve all pax with this "nasi kotak" thing with mineral water..
