SEPANG: Chaos reigned at the low-cost carrier terminal when a Myanmar-bound flight was delayed for almost 13 hours.

 

The Star received numerous phone calls from passengers complaining about not being able to board their flight.

 

AirAsia flight AK850 to Yangon was originally sche­­duled to depart at 6.10pm on Wednesday but could only depart at 6.55am yesterday.

 

A statement from the airline said the flight had to be delayed because of heavy rain.

 

“Consequently, boarding for the flight had to be aborted and guests were advised to remain at the terminal until the weather condition improved.

 

“Unfortunately, the heavy rain continued, forcing the flight to be cancelled,” the statement said yesterday.

 

All guests were given necessary assistance until their flight was rescheduled and they were provided with meals and refreshments, the statement added.

 

“Guests who did not wish to continue with the flight were given a refund option.

 

“Guests who agreed to remain were provided with free hotel accommodation,” it said.

If heavy rain alone is cause of the delay, surely other flights from LCCT would also have been similarly affected

And incoming flights too ?

The 6:10pm flight to Yangon cannot possibly be the last scheduled flight out from LCCT

my flight back to Doha with QR was delayed for 6hrs that day. supposedly the aircraft should arrive from Doha in the afternoon but somehow diverted to JHB. The departure time of 2055 was pushed to 0315 the next day. Took off at 0315 and head to HKT top drop off pax and head back to DOH. Tiring day indeed. Yes, the reason was due to the weather.

This is surprising considering it came from a LCC. In some parts of the world, you won't get anything at all whether you're on a full-service carrier or LCC. Europe *cough* *cough*

So, it was probably due to poor visibility and having an aerobridge won't help.

It was not the rain that did it. It was the weather that did so. Airport had NO landings for over an hour and many a/cs that were enroute had to take diversion to PEN/JHB/KCH while waiting for the weather to clear up. Trust me the number of diversions were huge on that day and having to continue the next sector after that (which is already delayed) and the other remaining sectors of the day, many of the aircrafts would have arrived at 6/7AM the next day. There were many flights yesterday that went with a P in the callsign.

If only one of the runways in KUL (if not all) is capable of 'Low Viz Procedure' (LVP), it will not be that bad ..... but then, this is the land of NATO ....... too much to expect something like that.......

LVO usually caters to low visibility but stable weather such as fog. Here in thunderstorm is is more than just visibility; strong and gusty wind is the more serious problem.

That particular one hour plus occured circa 4-5.30pm. Don't forget that the a/c is not only doing the RGN sector, many other sectors before that. I believe not only AK had this problem on that very day.

Thanks and I am fully aware what LVP/LVO is catered for and I am fully conversant with its operations and limitations too. However, having it as an option will come handy, just like SIN & BKK with at least CAT 2 ops. Not all rains and showers will come with strong and gusty winds, there is such thing called 'surges' especially during monsoon season and more often that not, the wind condition during that period is well within most of the modern aircraft autoland limitations........
