I dont believe cabotage was allowed for CX even in those days, but CX did have own stopover traffic rights. So a pax ticketed HKG-PEN can stopover in KUL and then jump on the KUL-PEN leg operated by CX on another day.

The 380s are not long term sunbathers. Most of the time, they are only there for a day or few days. They get rotated often to do the LHR runs and the occasional ICN, NRT etc. And soon, Umrah season will commence - so MED and JED runs this Q417-Q1-18.

Nobody really cares if the airframe is old as long as it is well-maintained, and more importantly, the interior is new or new-ish. CX/KA are/ were flying some old frames too but with new seats. To the vast majority of folks who would actually be paying and flying on such aircraft, a new-looking, smart, IFE-equipped interior is appreciated. And back to reality, nobody checks the age of the aircraft operating a particular route before deciding to purchase, or not, tickets with the airline-operator.

So remind me again how do planes ... er., copulate?
