Mohd Azizul Ramli 2 Report post Posted September 29, 2007 Dear MalaysianWingers, Our dearest Keith T suggested in the AK330 thread that there is a possibility for an organisation of MalaysianWings gathering in Surfers' Paradise, Gold Coast Australia on the first week of November 2007 (2-14 Nov), following AirAsia X's inaugural service to the Sunshine State. Quoting himself, "Sounds like you could organise an MW Do at Surfers'." At the moment, only two MalaysianWingers have confirmed their seats on the inaugural flights, honkit7 and myself. Keith T had also expressed his interest to join along - "Alas no MEL-OOL direct on QF so it'd have to be via SYD to attend the gathering." So, if it is going to be held, I think we should use this thread to channel input regarding the gathering. I think the least we can organise is a 'mandi manda and bercanda di pasiran pantai' session among us at Surfers' Paradise. Keith, do you surf(boarding)? Any thoughts? Keith T 2 Report post Posted September 29, 2007 (edited) I do surfboard (more bodyboard actually)...very badly. Don't list me as 'confirmed' at this stage - I still need to wait for my exam schedule. If this gets going, I hope to be able to squeeze in a day or 2 up at Surfers. Edited September 29, 2007 by Keith T

Mohd Azizul Ramli 2 Report post Posted September 29, 2007 The (promo) seats are now selling for MYR 418 one way with everything inclusive of taxes and charges amounting to MYR 1,509 for a return trip. A peek on Gold Coast.
Keith T 2 Report post Posted September 29, 2007 (edited) Wikitravel page here: http://wikitravel.org/en/Gold_Coast More than happy to host a similar event for MEL if y'all are also going to be booked on the planned service to AVV. [if the dates are right...] Lots of nice places to eat and drink here. And Nobu opened not long ago at the Crown casino complex so you no longer have to fly all the way to NYC. Check my siggy below. Your siggy also indicates that you'll be here in MEL. We have better coffee than them up there in QLD. Of course, I also hope that my exams would've finished by the time you get here. I'll know for sure tomorrow. edited to add - Oops spoke too soon. I now know for sure I have exams from the 5th to the 13th of NOV. This means that I won't be able to make it to the inaugural OOL do - sorry guys but I'll be busy slogging the weekend before my exam rather than learning how to surfboard properly. But I'm more than happy to catch up with you in MEL, SV - since you're here way after my exams have finished. Now if only our dear Prime Minister will call the election so I know for sure which Saturday I'll be occupied... Edited September 29, 2007 by Keith T

Liam, can you make it to downtown Gold Coast within the 3.5 hours time? Or are we going to held the gathering in the airport, ala Airliners.Net (Zurich Meeting being the most well known). Keith T 2 Report post Posted September 29, 2007 Liam, can you make it to downtown Gold Coast within the 3.5 hours time? Coolangatta to 'downtown' takes about 20-30 mins each way in a cab. On top of that, he has to clear CIQ since it's an international flight, but I shouldn't imagine that'd be too slow at OOL as they don't have many international arrivals. All a matter of staffing levels I suppose.
Peter Smith 1 Report post Posted September 30, 2007 (edited) I'm planning just to stay around the airport, there is the best spotting in Australia to be had at the airport...not in terms of the traffic but rather spotting locations. My brother will be travelling with me also, but he's a closet spotter. There is plenty of little shops around the airport (its built virtually on the beach off memory, been a while, i normally use BNE) so getting coffee and what not shouldn't be a problem...if not Twin Cities (Coolangatta/Tweed Heads) shopping is 5mins down the track. Mohd Azizul Ramli 2 Report post Posted September 30, 2007 I really hope AirAsia X will come out with a frequent flyer program, like Virgin Velocity. If they are going to be associated with the Virgins, I think AirAsia X should adopt the Virgin Velocity FFP or something similar. FFP will surely tied passengers to the carrier. Ask Keith T!
Keith T 2 Report post Posted September 30, 2007 (edited) FFP will surely tied passengers to the carrier. Ask Keith T! Me? Yep. I do admit I'm a mileage whore. In my case it ties me to an alliance rather than an individual carrier because I like choice. For instance most of my flights are QF/BA these days but their FFPs are crap, and due to the oneworld alliance I am able to substitute the FFP for something better in the same alliance, AAdvantage and yet still fly on the carriers of my choice with similar, if not same, benefits. And occasionally I'd want to fly CX for intra asian travel, or their relatively cheap J tickets to Europe. Same with my days flying SQ and accruing to LH. I'd say on the whole, intra-alliance recognition of elite pax is better on oneworld than it is on *A (or maybe it's just SQ that's being naughty...). With MH - decent carrier, horrible FFP - yet it's not part of an alliance and so I can't possibly fly MH but credit my MH miles to something else that'd also earn me elite status and accumulate award miles. Same deal with VS. So it takes a lot more than a good carrier in my case to 'tie' me to any carrier, when there's so much choice around and the advantages of the aligned carriers I've mentioned offering a competitive advantage over non-aligneds like MH, VS, a lot of the Middle Eastern carriers etc. Same argument can be applied to why I stay in chain hotels, over unique and interesting boutique hotels.
