Malaysia Airlines may join Skyteam

Recommended Posts

Malaysia Airlines may want to join Skyteam in 2008 or 2009. There had benn talk that Malaysia Airlines is going to join an alliance. One reason is because they are trying to recover from a large loss of money: RM$1.26 billion (2005). Two is that Malaysia Airlines agreed with Air France-KLM Royal Dutch Airlines on upgrading codeshares with them from regular to an alliance in 2006.

joining an alliance is not something that happens overnight. theres lots of discussions and procedures that need to be done, not to mention membership fees...

Exactly !!! That's why it's rumoured China Southern's entry has been delayed to early 2008 :o

A huge part of the joining process actually centre on negotiations as to interlining/codesharing agreements, as well as synchronisation of flight schedules. The other major aspect is the upgrading of the new member's reservation systems to synchronise them with the existing members, so that they can 'talk' to each other and do things like issue interlined tickets and recognise intra-alliance FFP status. Sometimes the existing members also need to upgrade their systems (like what the addition of JL, MA and RJ to oneworld has prompted), an often costly exercise and one of the reasons why EI decided to opt out of oneworld altogether!

Guys,

Look what I found on A.net, posted today by a very reliable (KLM) source:

I don't think that Air France is still as opposed to MH's eventual accession to Skyteam as the airline used to be. Sure enough, the Qantas deal is not very conducive towards accommodating MH and its extensive Australia network, yet the QF/AF deal seems to be beneficial for both parties involved, so why give it up.

Come winter, MH will for the first time operate daily frequencies to AF's CDG homebase, and it is a sure thing that MH could not have gotten their hands on the final two frequencies without a nod of approval from Air France. Let's not forget that no longer than 2 years ago MH were unsuccessfully struggling to add to the three weekly frequencies they had been operating for years. Now we are at daily frequencies, which might not seem a big deal, but which actually is a very big deal if one considers the notorious stingyness of the French government when it comes to giving out the rights.

I believe the the inclusion of MH in Skyteam is as good as a done deal and this can only be beneficial for both MH and the Skyteam Alliance as a whole. The alliance is in dire need of a partner in Southeast Asia and, as it goes, there are not many options left.

Now, we've to wait for an 'official' announcement...

Potential future members

Note that there is much speculation about non-aligned airlines joining one of the global alliances. The list below only includes airlines that have expressed their desire to join SkyTeam or are in negotiations to do so.

* Serbia Jat Airways - recently launched a campaign to join the alliance.

* Malaysia Malaysia Airlines - the airline reached an agreement with Air France-KLM to upgrade their code-sharing agreement into an alliance in 2006. No timeframe has been given for MAS joining the alliance, but the company's restructuring plan puts this no later than 2008-2009.

This is indeed a very good observation.

As to how the skyteam members may help, well, just imagine the doors skyteam will open for MAS. :good:

In terms of them offering their advice, i think that would be limited to perhaps general off-the-record chit chat between the top brass of all the airlines.
