LDU Upgrade !

Recommended Posts

This was reported in Daily Express yesterday

Sorry if reading the text may be difficult. Would have preferred to paste a link but they haven't updated their site since 29 Apr !!

So, something finally being done about LDU, allaying initial fears the place could be closed down for good.

Also, if the chap (Datuk Samsu Baharun) knows what he is talking about, could be an early hint as to AK's fleet plans for Sabah/Sarawak, or even that of carrier(s) AK intends to subcontract those routes out to. Pieter, any redundant F100's you know of ? :) Also, anyone in need of extra F50's ?

92 weekly flights LDU-BKI !! It's something like 13 daily runs on average, and if the F100 capacity is 100 pax, makes about 1,300 heads travelling LDU-BKI daily. A bit of an optimistic traffic projection you think ?!

Well, must give the guy credit - at least he didn't ramble on the obligatory commitment to make the airport a 'regional hub' to bring extra tourists in ..... blah, blah, blah !!

Datuk Samsu shouldn't expect too much, the route just doesn't warrant this much traffic for now.

AK operate F-100 or may be emberer. This may explain thru the photo captured by Jonathan from TF office.

Well, 1300 passengers prdicted a day may be a little bit too optimistic for rural service which MH hardly even survive with gov. subsidise. Hope with low fare brought up for this sector can ease the communication between rural people and the city.

The article more on AK side now, I guess they don't need MAS anymore and confirmed AK taking over the rural service????

Seth,

I guess it's not so much "they" don't need MH anymore, more like MH having been allowed to abandon "them" !

Yup, same sentiments here when I first saw the Embraer model in JK's pic. Makes one heck of a lot of sense to get the bird to operate here, IMHO !

Why, Adrian ? Still plenty parked in the US deserts, also a few also parked at Stork in Woensdrecht overhere; might, actually, be an interim solution before ordering E190's B)

LOL because I think they gonna stay with a one type fleet. It maybe not be A320 coming, maybe they opt for A319 or A318 for this route since they have extra order option.

Again it's maybe. :p :P

Certainly is.... Tawau cannot even sustain 13 daily runs to KK and has three folds the population of Lahad Datu, how can LD with 100,000+ population sustain this? If he is talking about a 20 years plan with lots of refugee from Indonesia and Philippines coming in, that might be possible....... the illegal immigrants of course!

Tengah Nipah Silabukan, the name is a little weird don't you guys think?

Good to hear that LDU will get upgraded, but I believe the terminal is very tired looking, in dying mode and long overdue for upgrade.

American Airlines just dumped their F-100 since 2004, why not get from them?

If you can imagine a wooden shoplot, half a coffeeshop and half is departure hall (err...room) without aircon and perimeter fence is 1.6m height and rusk badly. Then it's a LHD. Old LBU airport is still better than LHD as it's in and out are concrete and with aircon.

It is LDU

BTW the last time I went to Lahad Datu, I noticed the airport was near to the town. Would it be better if they relocate the airport instead of upgrading the current airport and close it for a year?

Either to Tawau or Sandakan. it will be a 2 hours journey in a car for LDU residents. Poor buggers!

I guess TWU might be closer for them as the airport now situated almost half way between Tawau and Semporna.

I would say don't expect anything too significant post upgrade - cost quoted is RM 1M only. Going by what govt contracts are like here in Sabah, it may just cover trimming the hedges and a new slap of paint. OK ok, maybe replace a few blown light bulbs in the loos as well !

Yeah man, what can you really do with one million for an airport, even Melaka get a 120 million ringgit upgrade compare to one million......hmmm, just replace the runway lights and put on airconditions with automatic doors :)

Instead of "Replace" runway lights, I would say it's "Installing" runway lights. LDU are on lighting constrain since there are no runway and taxi lights and plane has to leave before 6.30pm

Huh, don't have lights, oh lord, install lights first as suggested. Lights and wiring for whole airport must cost a lot!

So, eventually AK will purchase F-100 from somewhere, no news about that huh

Would love to see the AK livery on that fokker :)

Great news the airport won't close, still, I really doubt the F100 :(

By the way,

Transport Ministry officials also looked at the three proposed sites for the new Lahad Datu airport estimated to cost RM400mil.

Better than Melaka one with RM280M gap :)
