Naim 6 Report post Posted November 14, 2007 Saw this on Discovery Science channel just now. Amazing, so far up north - the white dot in middle of map below. Info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alert_Airport http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alert,_Nunavut Pic here: http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/research/dtg/~ah12/alert.html So what's the most southernmost permanent airport? Philip 1 Report post Posted November 15, 2007 (edited) Don't know about southernmost, but Barrow, Alaska is the northernmost permanent settlement in the entire United States. I think 30 days of night is set in this town, not sure. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barrow%2C_Alaska http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiley_Post-Wi...emorial_Airport Edit: Southernmost airport should be the runway at Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, which is almost directly over the south pole. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amundsen-Scot...th_Pole_Station Resupply aircraft is LC-130 Hercules flown regularly from McMurdo station. Fair enough, since Antractica is ice on solid ground. Otoh, the North Pole is atop ice sheets on a sea.
Philip 1 Report post Posted November 15, 2007 2 highest airports in the world are in Tibet, from google: "Tucked within the Himalayas, Tibet in the Republic of China has the two highest airfields in the world. Bangda airport in eastern Tibet, which lies 15,548 feet above sea level, was opened on Oct. 22, 1994. It relegated Lhasa airport (14,315 feet) in Tibet's capital to second place among the world's highest airports." According to wikipedia, Bangda has the longest runway in public use (Runway 14/32) at 18,044 ft. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bangda_Airport Another airport that comes to mind when thinking of highest elevation is El Alto International Airport at La Paz, Bolivia, one of the highest international airports in the world at 13,313 ft. adrianqcs 0 Report post Posted November 15, 2007 (edited) Don't know if it's the lowest in the world, but I do know it's -11 feet (around 3.30 metres below sealevel !!!) Furnace Creek Airport in Death Valley. Elevation 210 ft below sea level. California , United States 3000 feet runway length hmm...death valley... Summer low humidty 10%, high temperature 49 Celsius, very low altitude... perfect for short take off....hence short runway woo Edited November 15, 2007 by adrianqcs
