Airbus A350-900 is EASA certified

During the certification programme, EASA has established 16 technical panels composed of 40 engineers and test pilots, covering the full range of the programme from structure to avionics and from cabin safety to flight tests. EASA flight test teams have actively participated in more than 250 hours of flight testing. Nearly 700 certification documents were reviewed and accepted by EASA. More than 60,000 hours were logged by EASA staff or experts from European National Aviation Authorities to enable the certification of the A350.

Airbus A350-900 receives FAA Type Certification

Successfully achieves industry’s most rigorous aircraft test programme

13 NOVEMBER 2014 PRESS RELEASE
The world’s latest generation commercial airliner, the A350-900, received Type Certification on the 12th November from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) at FAA headquarters in Washington D.C. FAA Associate Administrator for Aviation Safety Peggy Gilligan and Airbus Group Inc. Chairman Allan McArtor were among the signing authorities at the official ceremony. The certified aircraft is powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines. Today’s milestone follows the A350-900 Type Certification awarded by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) on 30th September.
The A350-900’s respective FAA and EASA certification awards come after Airbus successfully finished a stringent program of certification trials which took the A350-900 airframe and systems well beyond their design limits to ensure all airworthiness criteria are fully met. The fleet of five test A350-900 aircraft completed the certification flight test campaign, on time, having accumulated more than 2,600 flight test hours to create and successfully achieve one of the aviation industry’s most thorough and efficient test programs ever developed for a commercial airliner.
The A350 XWB is Airbus’ all-new mid-size long range product line and the newest member of Airbus' leading widebody family. The A350 XWB stands out in its class thanks to its combination of passenger comfort, technological innovation and its unique industrial process. Built hand-in-hand with our customers, the A350 XWB sets new standards in terms of passenger experience, operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness. At the end of October 2014, the A350 XWB had won 750 orders from 39 customers worldwide.

Opening a new chapter in aviation, first delivery of A350 XWB to Qatar Airways

22 DECEMBER 2014 HEADLINE NEWS

Customer satisfaction means giving the airlines that operate Airbus aircraft exactly what they want. This was achieved on 22 December when A350 XWB MSN006 was delivered to launch customer Qatar Airways, widely recognised for insisting on the highest possible standards for its passengers. The airline has ordered 80 of the world’s most advanced airliners and the on-time, on-quality delivery is the culmination of eight years’ hard work from everyone involved in the A350 XWB programme.
As the delivery ceremony got started Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker, said, “This is a very proud moment for Qatar Airways, we have watched this dynamic aircraft grow to be truly ahead of the curve and I am delighted to welcome the latest generation into our rapidly expanding fleet. Qatar Airways will be leading the way in the aviation sector by offering our passengers the opportunity to travel onboard the most modern of airliners in the sky.”
“We wanted to fly the first prototype before Paris airshow 2013 and we did it,” Fabrice Brégier told guests. “We wanted to certify this aircraft in the third quarter of 2014, meaning the shortest certification process in aircraft history, and we did it. We wanted to deliver this aircraft a couple of months later and we did it. So I am very proud of the teams led by Didier Evrard and all teams in the functions who supported them. It’s a perfect match, to be handing over the first of an all-new, world class aircraft to a leading world class airline.”
“We are very proud to have worked with Qatar Airways and Airbus on the A350 XWB, using the latest technology to deliver new standards in customer service,” added Eric Schulz, President, Civil Large Engines at Rolls-Royce, the exclusive engine manufacturer. He described the occasion as, “a very important day for everyone at Rolls-Royce.”
As the speeches ended, the guests were invited to an artistic performance that reflected the close relationship between the Middle-East based launch customer and the manufacturer headquartered in South West France. The beautiful soprano voice of Hiba Al Kawas, a pioneer of Arabic opera, floated over music provided by the Orchestre National du Capitole, Toulouse, as calligraphy artist Faouzia Hilmy illustrated a verse of ninth century Arabic poetry on the theme of friendship.

It has been more than three months since Qatar Airways took delivery on 22-Dec-2014 of the world's first A350 XWB. Since then Qatar has taken delivery of only a second aircraft and has used it to increase Doha-Frankfurt service from one to two daily flights, perhaps for operational or commercial reasons although far catchier was Qatar CEO Akbar Al Baker's explanation the double daily A350 would "rub salt in the wound" of Lufthansa.
A far greater commitment is in Singapore, where Qatar Airways will have three daily A350 flights to Singapore, a longer flight than Frankfurt. Singapore may be the first airport to see two A350 operators when Finnair commences A350 service there after other Asian points.
Vietnam Airlines will launch A350 service to Paris CDG while Cathay Pacific may make Auckland an early A350 destination. A350 configurations range from 280 to 305 seats. No airline has first class (yet) and business class seat counts range from 29 to 46, with business class comprising 10-15% of total seats.
Frankfurt and Singapore only announced A350 destinations for Qatar
Launch operator Qatar Airways received its second A350 in Mar-2015 and is using the aircraft for its second daily Doha-Frankfurt flight. The first flight has been operating with the A350 since the first aircraft was delivered at the end of 2014.
Qatar expects to end 2015 with five A350s in service. Qatar initially announced New York JFK as the first A350 destination. The switch from New York JFK to Frankfurt could have been commercial, operational (Frankfurt is closer than New York and initial production aircraft do not always have full specifications) or another reason.
There was speculation Qatar either moved the inaugural A350 route to Frankfurt or could not serve New York so instead selected Frankfurt as a rub to Lufthansa, based in Frankfurt and actively campaigning for restrictions on traffic rights for Gulf carriers. Whatever the ultimate reason, outspoken Qatar CEO Akbar Al Baker is running with the Lufthansa theme, saying A350 service to Frankfurt would "rub salt in the wound" of Lufthansa.
Qatar's second long-haul A350 destination will be Singapore, with the airline to offer three daily flights to the city – a larger commitment (frequency and distance) than two daily flights to Frankfurt. Qatar currently offers two daily flights to Singapore with 787-8s.
Vietnam Airlines marketing itself as first Asian operator of both A350 and 787

Airbus Warming to Jumbo-Sized A350 Able to Take on Boeing's 777X

web.jpg

Airbus Group SE said it’s stepping up work with airlines to determine whether a bigger variant of the A350 wide-body jetliner would make sense as it seeks to challenge the order success of Boeing Co.’s enlarged 777X.
The aircraft, a longer version of the A350-1000, itself already a so-called stretch model, would be just four seats shy of 400 in a three-class configuration, large enough to take on the biggest 777-9 planned by Boeing, Airbus said Tuesday at a briefing in Paris.
Airbus’s A350-900, introduced in 2014, typically seats 325, with the -1000, due to commence deliveries in 2017, offering 366 berths. While that’s sufficient to combat existing 777 variants and the upgraded 777-8, the 777-9 will accommodate as many as 425 seats and be “in a class by itself,” Boeing says.
“We’ve started to study what we could do on top of the A350-900 and A350-1000 because some airlines have asked us, and it’s our duty to look,” Fabrice Bregier, who heads Airbus’s planemaking arm, said in Paris.

Airbus touts 400-seat 'A350-8000' jetliner

"It would have similar capacity and range (as the 777-9) and substantially lower seat-mile costs," Airbus sales chief John Leahy said in an interview. "We are showing it to airlines right now."

It marks a shift in priorities after the oil price collapse eased pressure on Airbus to upgrade its larger four-engined A380, output of which is declining because of slow sales.
