AirAsia X Orders 25 A330-300 + 10 Option

According to the Airbus Press Release, the contact was signed in Paris:

Sorry, I mis-read the news report. It was indeed signed in Paris. The deal might be a consolation for Airbus after losing Air Canada's narrowbody deal.

AirAsia X plans to fly to Europe by 2016

Christine Lim, Bernama | 11:45AM Dec 22, 2013

AirAsia X, the long-haul low-fare airline affiliate of the AirAsia Group, plans to fly to Europe by 2016.

Co-founder and director Tony Fernandes said the airline is also looking at the possibility of flying to the US with the delivery of the newly-ordered A330-300s in 2015.

The margins are thin on these routes but we will do it for the long term, Fernandes told members of the Malaysian media on the sidelines of the signing ceremony between AirAsia X and Airbus recently for the firm order of 25 more A330-300s.

Thanks. Yes, I understand as well that six leased A330 are coming. However, AirAsia X also took delivery of A330-202 9M-XAD ex-Batavia Air earlier last year. 9M-XAD is also leased from ILFC. I am not sure if D7 counts this as part of the 6 leased aircraft deal.

If they don't, the sixth A333 should be B-HWF cn 654.

Here is their PR:

AirAsia X, the long haul, low fare affiliate of Malaysian based AirAsia Group signed a letter of intent with International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC) for the lease of six Airbus A330-300. These aircraft are the same model as those that AirAsia X purchased directly from Airbus, with Rolls Royce Trent 700 engines and a Maximum Take-Off Weight of 233 tons.

Don't think XAD counts...

AirAsia X partners GE in US$1.5bil aircraft engines deal

KUALA LUMPUR: AirAsiaX Bhd has partnered with US-based GE Aviation to buy its CF6-80E1 engines to power AirAsia X’s 25 new Airbus A330-300 aircraft in a US$1.5bil (RM 4.9b) deal.

AirAsia X said on Monday these engines will be covered by a multi-year OnPoint solution service agreement for engine maintenance, repair and overhaul.

It said the tie-up would strengthen the group’s presence in the long-haul low-cost carrier space.

AirAsia Group chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes said with this order, GE will become AirAsia X’s second core engine supplier.

“Our fleet size has reached sufficient scale to support two engine types, with sufficient spare engine coverage, specialist engineers and technicians, and strong on-site service commitment from both engine providers.

“GE’s long -standing relationship and track record with the AirAsia Group, gave us confidence to make this selection,” he said.

Airasia X To Spend RM2.1 Billion As Capex On Fleet Expansion

KUALA LUMPUR, June 3 (Bernama) -- AirAsia X Bhd will allocate at least RM2.1 billion in 2014 as capex to acquire seven new Airbus A330-300 aircraft, said Chief Executive Officer Azran Osman Rani.

He told Bernama that to date, the long-haul budget airline had received three aircraft, while the rest would be delivered gradually by year-end.

The airline received one Airbus A330-300 on finance lease and two A330-300s on an operating lease in the first quarter of the year.

"We are on track to settling the aircraft orders that we have committed to. Each of the aircraft will cost more than RM300 million and financing is through a variety of means," he said.

Asked to elaborate on the funding, Azran said it would be through debt financing and operating leases, to maintain AirAsia X's cashflow.

"We aim to be net cash neutral or net cash positive, despite some short-term earnings pressure. This is to ensure that our cash flow at year-end is the same as the start of the year," he added.

The company recorded a positive operating cashflow of RM131.6 million in the first quarter of 2014.

Currently, AirAsia X is operating 16 A330-300 aircraft.

A total of 13 aircraft were under operating leases as at March 31 2014.

The operating lease expenditure escalated 58.6 per cent year-on-year to RM59.9 million from RM37.8 million during the same period last year.

Azran said AirAsia X would balance between aggressive growth and short-term pressures to achieve a healthy financial position by its fourth quarter this year.

"It is because all the capacity we have added would have been digested with yields reaching the break-even point to be profit positive," he added.

AirAsia X recorded the highest year-on-year quarterly growth in available-seat-kilometre capacity of 60.1 per cent to 6.2 billion in the first quarter ended March 31, 2014.

Under financial lease, lessee is expected to own the asset at the end of the lease. It is really a form of financing.

Operational lease - ownership resides with the lessor. Lessee can just walk away at end of lease period by returning the asset to lessor. Also labeled as off-balance sheet financing.

Anyone can explain what is the difference between having a financial lease as opposed to an operational lease?

Wikipedia has a good article explaining the difference in financial lease & operational lease: in short financial lease is long term & almost close to ownership, while operational lease is short term for quick turnaround.

AirAsia X in talks with Airbus to delay aircraft delivery

KUALA LUMPUR: AirAsia X Bhd is in talks with Airbus Group SE to delay more planes due for delivery in the next two years as the long-haul arm of South-East Asia's biggest low-fare carrier takes steps to improve its financial standing.
The airline has received three of the eight aircraft planned for 2015, with one more scheduled to arrive in October, chief executive officer Benyamin Ismail (pic) said in an interview recently.
AirAsia X would like to rework the schedule for the other four planes due this year and the nine it was supposed to take in 2016 and 2017, he said.
“We just want to make sure Airbus assists us in helping manage our capacity moving forward,” Benyamin said from the company's head office in Sepang, outside Kuala Lumpur.
“We are not saying that we are not going to take it; what we are saying is give us a bit more time to take it later.”

I thought all these have done and dusted. Delaying some more?
