Lao plane crashes in Pakse A Lao Airlines plane from Vientiane crashed just before landing at Pakse airport on Wednesday, an airline official said. No casualties were reported.

The ART twin-turbo plane flight QV301 with about 40 passengers on board crashed into the Mekong River as it was coming in to land at the airport in Champassak province in southern Laos due to bad weather.

The plane left Wattay airport in Vientiane at 2.45pm and crashed at 4pm, the official said.

It was unknown if there were any Thai passengers on the flight.

Unconfirmed report says it is RDPL-34233, ATR 72-600, delivered on 29th March 2013. Such a short life....First crash involving -600 series.

Military plane with top officials crashes in northern Laos

A Laos air force aircraft carrying senior military officers and officials, including two ministers and the capitol’s mayor, has crashed in the north of the country. Of the14 people on board only three have reportedly survived.

A source in the nation's Defense Ministry told RIA Novosti that among the passengers there were the Defense Minister and his wife, as well as the Minister of Public Security, the mayor of the country's capital, Vientiane, deputy Minister of Cultural Affairs, and the deputy chief of the Laos government secretariat and other officials.

The names and occupations of the survivors have not been reported.

The crash happened as the flight was on its way to Xiangkhouang province to celebrate the 55th anniversary of the second division of the Laos People's Army, the source said.

The Ukrainian-made An-74 TK300 aircraft crashed while coming into land, just four kilometers from the airstrip. The plane was brand new, delivered to Laos in 2009 for carrying VIP passengers.

Flight crew decisions a factor in Lao Airlines crash

A summary of the final report on the investigation into the Lao Airlines crash in Champassak province that took the lives of all 44 passengers and five crew on board was released in Vientiane on Friday.

Deputy Minister of Public Works and Transport Mr Lattanamany Khounnivong ( centre ) releases the aircraft accident investigation report.

According to the report, a possible cause of the ATR 72-600 aircraft crash was a sudden change in weather conditions and the failure of the flight crew to properly execute the published instrument approach.

The release described as follows the detail the accident involving Flight QV301 that departed from Vientiane to Pakxe at 2:40 pm on October 16, 2013.

After becoming airborne the plane turned left via Bangkok FIR to Ubon then direct to Pakxe.

At 3:50 pm, the pilot started the approach facing South East.

A local thunderstorm was occurring around the airport.

It was raining heavily but the pilot continued the approach and decided to go-around at an altitude below the MAP in a steep right turn

After impacting trees on an island located in the Mekong River, the fuselage struck the bank and plunged into the river.

It disintegrated on impact killing all 44 passengers and five crew members on board.

Deputy Minister of Public Works and Transport Mr Lattanamany Khounnivong reported that the flight crew setting 183 metres as the minima contrary to the published minima of 300 metres was one of the factors in the accident.

Upon descent the plane m issed the runway so the crew decided to go-around and initiated a steep right turn before the fatal descent.

The report, released by the Lao Ministry of Public Works and Transport, was the product of an investigation by officials from Laos, France's civil aviation authority BEA (appointed by aircraft manufacturer ATR) and AAIB (Air Accidents Investigation Branch) Singapore.

“The sole objective of the investigation of an accident or incident shall be the prevention of accidents and incidents and it is not the purpose of this activity to apportion blame or liability,” Mr Lattanamany said, quoting the Chicago Convention on Internatiaonal Civil Aviation and Lao Civil Aviation Safety Regulations.

The Pilot in Command, 57 year old Yong Som from Cambodia, had logged over 5,600 flying hours, including 3,200 hours in the ATR-72.

The flight's First Officer, 22 year old Soulisack Hongvanthong, had logged more than 400 flying hours after finishing his training in France in preceding months.
