Cathay Pacific employee investigated for photo of sleeping pilot

Recommended Posts

A Cathay Pacific pilot was photographed asleep at the controls while the aeroplane was in mid-air.

The Hong Kong-based airline said on Sunday that it has begun disciplinary proceedings regarding the incident.

However, the airline is investigating the person who took the photo rather than the sleeping man.

The photo was allegedly taken during a flight from Dubai to Hong Kong in August in an Airbus A340 cruising at 11,000 metres.

The pilot said he was taking a power nap, and the photo was an invasion of his privacy.

The colleague who took the photo is believed to be either a co-pilot or flight attendant.

The airline said that the sleeping pilot was not in the wrong because "controlled rest" is allowed during cruise times on flights in order to combat fatigue.

However, company rules prohibit employees from taking photos on the flight deck.

The pilot recognised himself after the photo was published in a local newspaper.

A Cathay Pacific spokesperson said in a statement: "We can confirm that the picture was taken by a Cathay Pacific employee without the knowledge or consent of the pilot on one of our aircraft."

The spokesperson added that the photo should not be interpreted wrongly, as pilots from most airlines are permitted to take "controlled rest".

This privacy breach follows an incident in August where Cathay Pacific was in the spotlight for leaked photos of a flight attendant performing oral sex on a pilot aboard an aircraft.

'Controlled Rest' or 'Power Nap' is APPROVED by ICAO and being practiced in many major airlines in the world. However, taking picture of another person without his consent is violation of 'Privacy Act' - at least in Hong Kong.

Do distribute energy drinks to the crews so that they could keep themselves up and awake.

To keep them awake in such manner is more dangerous, since they then do not realize they are losing alertness :)

That explains why an 8-hour flight can be operated by two flight crew. How long is (in hours) between DXB and HKG?

What worries one is sleep dementia. There's one report that put this phenomena as one of the causes for an aircraft accident. But then, it varies from person to person.

Co-pilot supposed to take over control while captain is in power nap mode..no?
