Parliament: SC, Bursa Launch Probe Into MAS-AirAsia Share Swap

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 3 (Bernama) -- The Securities Commission (SC) and Bursa Malaysia have launched an investigation into the swap deal between state investment arm Khazanah Nasional Bhd and Tune Air Sdn Bhd of shares in Malaysian Airline System Bhd (MAS) and AirAsia Bhd.

Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Dr Awang Adek Hussin told the Dewan Rakyat today that the probe would also look into the possibility of insider trading.

"It will take time because it involves many accounts and a huge value.

"In this matter we need to look into it thoroughly," he said when winding-up the debate on the Supply Bill 2012 on the ministry's behalf today.

He said if the probe by the SC and Bursa Malaysia found evidence of insider trading, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) could also be invited to investigate.

Under the deal announced in August, Tune Air and Khazanah -- the major shareholders of AirAsia and MAS respectively -- agreed to swap their shares which resulted in Tune Air holding 20.5 percent equity interest in full service carrier MAS and Khazanah holding 10.0 percent equity interest in budget airline AirAsia.

Speed Up Probe Into MAS-AirAsia Share Swap, Says Dr Mahathir

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 4 (Bernama) -- Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has urged the probe into the swap deal involving Malaysian Airline System Bhd (MAS) and AirAsia Bhd shares to be conducted as quickly as possible.

"If one wants to investigate, go ahead but make sure it doesn't affect the daily operations of MAS and AirAsia," the former prime minister told reporters after delivering a speech at the end of the 3rd World Chinese Economic Forum here.

It would be difficult for the carriers to operate if the investigators seized their accounts and kept them for months, he said.

Yesterday, Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Dr Awang Adek Hussin told the Dewan Rakyat that the Securities Commission (SC) and Bursa Malaysia had commenced investigations into the swap deal.

Pursuant to a collaboration agreement announced in August, Tune Air Sdn Bhd and state investment arm Khazanah Nasional Bhd -- the major shareholders of AirAsia and MAS respectively -- swapped their shares which resulted in Tune Air holding 20.5 percent equity interest in the full service carrier and Khazanah holding 10.0 percent in the budget airline.

Dr Mahathir said it supported the deal because it would add value to MAS.

"My only complaint was the management. MAS often posted losses while AirAsia had been able to reduce costs without incurring losses.

"So AirAsia must know something that perhaps can be applied by MAS," he said.

Well, there's mixed feelings. Some have fallen for Tony's charms, others called him a sweet talker & a snake. Personally, I think it's more of a PR exercise to reduce the anger of the staff towards TF.

Oh, and the A380's going to have another livery that's not the current Euro-white & the swoosh. I suggested they bring back the Hibiscus, although we'll see soon if they took it into consideration.

Don't be. It could be the Euro-white MINUS the swoosh, as opposed to " not the current Euro-white AND the swoosh".

It's definitely not Euro-white. Full color on the plane, blue but no red. Apparently the board wanted it. Guess who asked to get rid of the red then?

This new livery will be applied to MNA only or all the 6 A380s?

From what I can tell, all of them will have the same livery.

Wo! I am not sure if it is a good business decision if all 6 were to wear the proposed Heliconia livery, considering the current jet fuel price. The A380 is the biggest and heaviest passenger airliner + Heliconia is a very heavy livery to wear + A380 is a quad engines airliner = MH's fuel bill will be unimaginable.

Heard that's what the board wants so...

YB Wee Choo Keong, Member of Parliament for Wangsa Maju has been attacking Tony Fernandes for a very long time and has stepped up his personal attacks recently: His most recent rant

I am not sure if he has all the facts since many quotes are just from press reports of interviews.

TF has decided to respond to this in his blog, Rural Air Services

YB Wee seems to be carrying the grievances of a lot of people. Its very interesting to see the debate. Let it continue! :)
