Aah, the plot thickens.

 

I have read the article as posted by Naim at #6

Although the DCA issued a notam on the subject, as they should be, it was not the DCA who was a bit late in the game, it was MABH.

After all works were concluded, perhaps some people at MAHB were thinking, "hmmm, should we not have a closer look?"

And so they did, apparently.

The DCA notam did not mention potholes, it mentioned runway surface strenght. Now, without getting into semantics here, the DCA notam further mentioned a valididaty date till Dec,31 2013. So, i myself and others were arguing in another topic here why Sriwijaya could not operate as of January 2014 whilst their GSA said it would be July 2014.

 

Now we know why. And it is not over for Sriwijaya in July as MAHB says, “MAHB is finalising arrangements with a private geology consultancy firm to look into the soil condition. They are expected to start work in January and the study will take up to six months.”

"He said follow-up plans would be drawn up after the study was completed". An open book, so to say.

 

Apart from the blame game, which will be interesting to observe, we also will see who has the best and effective political connections. Will it be the Sriwijaya GSA or the not yet known other interested party who does not like Sriwijaya coming into Malaysia.

You see, the plot thickens.

An RM45 million upgrade for the Sultan Azlan Shah Airport in Ipoh has been found wasted following the discovery of potholes on the extended runway, preventing aircraft, such as the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737-400, from landing in the Perak capital city.

Might as well do it since RM65 millions was "spent" , what is another RM 60 millions or so to elevate the runway? While at it, they may want to spend another RM20 millions to noise barricade the runway's end which is so close to residential areas. With bigger jets, definitely the noise would be immense.

 

With not much investment potentials on the card for Ipoh and the state itself, do we really need to upgrade the airport to an international standard?

No doubt it has high tourism potentials but I don't see it happening in the next 2-3 years. Progress have been awfully slow. Just take a look at the roads leading to and fro the MB's "palace". Its an absolute crawl during normal office hours.

Elsewhere, the life is so laidback that it could be labeled as the retiree state.

Yes, it is because it is far enough to make sense (travelling time saved) - also many Ipoh folks work in SIN. Similar to why KUL-KBR is packed.

There's another competitor in the Malaysia-Singapore route - high speed rail. It is reported that this train will only take 90minutes to reach Singapore from KL. But only in 2020.

MAHB has fuzzy logic!

 

Someone asked Aireen Omar why AK is not flying to IPH. She replied that MAHB charges for IPH are way too high for them to begin investing in routes to IPH.

 

Looks like they have to persuade MAHB to do a LGK-like deal before they can serve IPH... sad, customer teaching supplier how to do business!


I've never understood the rationale behind the name "KLIA2". It's not an airport in its own right, as the name implies, so why can't they just call it Terminal 2?

You won't find names like JFK8, HKIA2 or Changi1, so why KLIA2?
