Boeing 787-10 May Enter Service In 2012

December 22, 2005 15:44 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 22 (Bernama) -- Boeing Co, which on Wednesday described building a stretch version of its new 787 as "highly likely", Thursday disclosed that the aircraft, known as the 787-10, may enter service by 2012.

"The timing for the 787-10 to enter service is probably no earlier than some time in 2012," said vice president and general manager of the 787 programme, Boeing Commercial Airplane, Mike Bair.

Boeing was currently studying the possibility of stretching the 787-9 into the 787-10 and talking with several interested customers, he said during a teleconference with Asia Pacific journalists.

"We have also done some fairly comprehensive market surveys in terms on opportunities (for the 787-10). At this point, it is highly likely that we are going to do another stretch, the -10," he said.

The 787-10 is expected to carry around 300 passengers, comparable to the 777-200ER and is slightly higher than the 787-9, currently the largest plane in the 787 family with more than 250 seats in a tri-class configuration.

Pleased with the existing orders for the 787, which currently comes in a family of three super-efficient airplanes, namely the 787-8, 787-3 and 787-9, Bair said: "The market response has been just phenomenal."

A total of 254 firm orders to date will keep Boeing busy in delivering the airplanes from 2008 up to 2011. It is committed to deliver 112 of the planes in 2008 and 2009.

Bair said Boeing was looking at several options to ramp up the assembly of the 787 so that the production rate of the jetliner would be higher than any other wide-body aircraft.

To a question, he said: "We are in conversation with a lot of airlines, including Malaysia Airline System (MAS) on the 787 where we are keeping in touch with them almost on a daily basis."

If the national carrier or any other airline orders the 787 in the first quarter of 2006, Bair said delivery was expected in 2012.

The 787 is seen as the replacement for MAS' ageing A330 fleet. As at March 31, 2005 MAS has five A330-200 and 11 A330-300 planes.

Ill Believe that MH has ordered them when they have an official press release... i think Fleet Upgrading should be far far far down the list... cost restructuring right now is way more important that planning for this, but that does not mean it should be neglected..

MH and its Management need to get its Priorities straight, such as Keeping our Loyal Staff!! not losing them to EK etc...

i dont think what they're doin is wrong..i mean..think bout it...u have to start planning and ordering from now to receive it in 2012...thats about 6 yrs to go.....so...cost restructuring can still go on for the next 5 yrs..before the planes are delivered....and....by then the plans is....the airline will be out of the red....they cant restructure the airline..and then order the planes...which cant be delivered the following day

I thought all plans for fleet renewal has been put on hold for the time being, including the B734 and F50 replacements which has been deferred yet again.

Lets remember that MAS does not buy the planes...PMB does...so....even if MH has got no cash PMB still has it...they can purchase the planes..and MH will lease it from them..like it is doin now...and to lease a plane..you'll not need a lump sum of cash but rather monthly cash roll will be used....therefore business goes on as usual..and again..i would like to stress that to get a plane in 10 years, they need to order it from now...
